WhatsApp takes an important step for its desktop platform: it is now possible to make and receive audio and video calls directly from WhatsApp Web, without installing the dedicated application for Windows or macOS.
The feature brings to the browser one of the most requested functions by users and makes the user experience much more complete, especially for those who work from a PC, use shared computers, or cannot install additional software.
WhatsApp eliminates one of its most historic limits: calls and video calls directly from the browser
With the new update, WhatsApp Web allows making individual voice calls and video calls, joining group calls and video calls, and receiving calls directly from the browser.
As a result, it will no longer be necessary to download the desktop app: simply access WhatsApp Web from your own compatible browser and use the new built-in features. Meta emphasizes that the experience will be practically identical to that available on smartphones and desktops.
In WhatsApp Web, you will also find screen sharing, reactions during calls, the “Calls” tab with full history, and the list of favorite contacts. Even on the browser, all calls will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption.
Call transfer and the waiting room are also arriving
Among the most interesting new features is the call transfer, a function that allows moving an ongoing call from one device to another without interrupting the conversation.
For example, it will be possible to start a call on your smartphone and continue the conversation on WhatsApp Web once you are in front of the PC (or vice versa). All of this happens without having to hang up or start a new call.
WhatsApp also introduces a waiting room dedicated to group calls. When an invitation link is created it will be possible to activate the option “Request participation approval”, which will require participants to wait for the organizer’s approval before entering the call.
This feature is intended especially for meetings, online classes and workgroups.
Immediate HD video and noise suppression
The update also improves call quality. With QuickHD, WhatsApp promises high-definition video from the very first seconds of the conversation, without waiting for the quality to progressively increase.
Also debuting is the background noise suppression, which automatically reduces ambient sounds to make the voice clearer during calls. The option can be activated or deactivated directly from the call settings.
Rollout already started
Meta has confirmed that all these features are already in distribution and will be gradually available to all WhatsApp Web users.
