Do you have enough space? Xiaomi Gallery asks for a 61,000 GB update

Imagine wanting to free up some space and finding yourself with a download request that would occupy the entire archive of a small data center. A clearly out of scale bug which, fortunately, turned out to be only a numerical display error and not a real attempt by Xiaomi to conquer the Guinness World Records with the heaviest update in history.

In these hours Chinese Mi Fans have found themselves dealing with a pretty challenging bug for their smartphones. Imagine starting updates to the apps on your phone, only to discover a terrifying download of a staggering 61 TB!

That is what happened to Xiaomi enthusiasts in China: the implicated app is the Gallery, dedicated to viewing, editing and managing photos. During the normal update phase, users found themselves facing a download of 61,787,778 MB, or about 61 TB.

A modest amount of space for an update aimed at fixing some known issues and improving stability. Clearly it was a bug, identified and reported through the Xiaomi community: the company quickly fixed the error and the download returned to “normal” sizes.

Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, the defect occurred only in China, and at the moment it does not seem that the same has happened for regional software versions.
