Although a smartphone was presented at MWC 2023 very “similar” to Phone (1), the presence of Nothing at the Catalan fair it did not mean new products. Despite this, an event was held last day during which the patron Carl Pei seized the opportunity to give some anticipation on the future of the company, speaking of smartphones but also of other product categories and even leaflets.
Nothing reveals what to expect from its future at MWC 2023
Let's start with the elephant in the room: NothingPhone (2). The company has confirmed the presentation period and the Qualcomm chipset, but for this we refer you to thededicated article. Carl Pei is also back to talk about folding, after having it already done in the past: according to him, it is an innovation “driven by the supply chain and not consumer insights“, that is the willingness of producers to sell new technology with higher margins but without really thinking about its usefulness. And the answer to the question of whether we can expect a collapsible Nothing is quite categorical: “No".
Nothing has 410 employees (including 350 engineers) and has exceeded its quota 1 million products sold over the course of two years, between headphones and smartphones, with revenues tenfold. Results that have been achieved with a rather limited catalog compared to the average, a topic on which mr. Pei exposed himself clearly: “we want to create iconic products and support them well, if you make 10 or 20 phones a year, that's really hard to do. Getting consumer interest in every new product is kind of like a drug, you want to keep publishing stuff.”. Currently, therefore, it seems that Nothing wants to hold an annual cadence for the launch of a new smartphone, but not only: at MWC 2023, the CEO confirmed that in 2023 there will be a new product category in which Nothing will enter. It's hard to say what it could be: an audio device? One SmartWatch to accompany the launch of Phone (2) and enrich the ecosystem on which Nothing focuses so much?
At the Barcelona event there was also talk of the competition and how it could have copied Nothing. For example OnePlus 11 Concept: Before being introduced, the rear blue stripes looked similar to the Glyph LEDs of Phone (1), but Carl Pei specified that it is a “distinct approach from his phone's Glyph lighting scheme“. Different speech for Unihertz Moon"we want to make technology fun again, if we can inspire our industry to start experimenting more, that helps our vision. "
