Since the beginning of 2021, Mini LED technology has made itself known in the field of TVs for the quality of the images reproduced and for its low energy consumption. Thanks to this new backlighting technology which, let's remember, was designed for IPS panels, allows a much more precise and uniform control of the brightness of the backlighting area, leading to a significant increase in quality even on non-OLED monitors.
Well, if already in 2021 it was understood that the future of high-end displays would no longer belong only to OLEDs, but also to Mini LEDs (it is not for nothing that Apple uses this technology in its MacBook Pros), in the last two years this technology has always suffered from one major flaw: the price.
In recent months we have seen various mini LED displays arrive on the market, all of which share both excellent image quality and a rather high price. But things are changing: the KTC M27P20 Pro it is an excellent 4K mini LED monitor, it has a USB-C port, integrates ambient LEDs and has a stand that allows it to be rotated 90 °, and through the box you find below, you could take it home for less of 500 euros. Not bad, right?
KTC M27P20 Pro Review: Affordable 4” 27K Mini LED Display with USB-C
Design and materials
Made mostly of good quality polycarbonate, the design of the KTC M27P20 Pro it is minimalistic and simple, also thanks to an excellent management of the frames. In essence, seen from the front, the screen is almost borderless on 3 of its 4 sides, with opaque frames only 9 mm thick, which become 17 mm along the lower edge.
The base of the stand is squared, integrates a hole for cable management and connects to the monitor with a mechanical coupling that is very simple to manage: it is an excellent stand, which allows for adjustment of inclination, height and rotation, and that must be assembled following a procedure that will take a few seconds.
In the rear area of the monitor, then, environmental LEDs have been integrated (one circular at the point where the stand connects to the panel and two linear along the two upper diagonals) which can also be customized via the OSD, while in the corner the device power and control key has been inserted at the bottom. Many ports for connections: KTC M27P20 Pro it has one DisplayPort 1.4 port, two HDMI 2.1 and one USB Type-C (with DP Alt mode, data and 90W power). Also integrated are 2 further USB data ports, a USB upstream port and an input for the headphone jack.
I would make a small note only regarding the positioning: I would have liked to see at least one USB port and the input for the 3.5 mm jack positioned in an easier to reach area, but there is no doubt that in terms of connectivity the KTC M27P20 Pro it is second to none.
Technical features
Il KTC M27P20 Pro it uses a 27” Fast IPS panel with a 4K resolution (3840×2160) and a maximum refresh rate of 160 Hz. It is compatible with Nvidia and AMD VRR technologies and guarantees a peak brightness close to 1000 nits.
Contrast and blacks are guaranteed by the 576 local dimming zones of Mini LED technology, and it is VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certified with coverage of 118% of the DCI-P3 color space and 160% of the sRGB color space. The good contrast ratio, together with the Mini LED technology, guarantees very deep blacks and also integrates a Quantum Dot layer.
In short, from the point of view of the technical characteristics there is poco to criticize al KTC M27P20 Pro, especially when compared to the very low selling price for the technologies integrated in this device, if not for a couple of small details.
One of these is due to the relationship between the local dimming zones and the number of pixels in the panel. Let me explain: it is true that there are 576 local dimming zones, but the panel pixels are over 3 million, which means that it could happen that (only in some scenes) the light coming from small illuminated objects could other surrounding darkened areas, creating a very light blooming effect, i.e. a sort of "halo". However, it must be said that this is a very rare phenomenon, which is only noticeable in particularly demanding scenes such as those in which fireworks are reproduced.
The ratio between diagonal and resolution is also excellent: it leads to 108.79 ppi and translates into very sharp details, clearly legible text provided that you intervene with a resizing in the operating system settings: if you work at 3840 x 2160, the pixel pitch of 0,156 mm makes everything too small and tiny and my advice is to set this setting to 150%.
Video quality and functionality
On paper therefore, the technical specifications of the KTC M27P20 Pro they are definitely promising, but how did the screen behave in daily life? I'll answer right away: definitely good. Despite the rather low price for a Mini LED, we are talking about a product made with extreme care, well balanced and compliant with the specifications declared by the company.
After the first ignition I used the lower controls of the product to adjust the saturation and contrast settings, as I always prefer them more incisive to give me a greater impact when gaming or watching movies. The maximum brightness is great for indoor use and the viewing angles are good.
And the gaming experience is equally pleasant, above all thanks to the presence of the HDMI 2.1 ports that allow the connection of a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X at maximum performance with which AMD's FreeSync is a real game-changer .
Through the menu you can activate all the functions integrated with the monitor, such as FreeSync itself, HDR, change the response time, calibrate the image and activate the low blue light emission mode, and so on. And even if we are talking about a rather basic OSD, all the menu items are actually clear and easy to reach and it is equally simple to manage the color of the rear LEDs.
Selling price and conclusions
The official selling price of the KTC M27P20 Pro it is 549,00 euros but, through the box below, you could buy it for 499,00 euros. And the quality that this product guarantees is much higher than all its direct competitors at less than 500 euros. There is poco to do. Of course, perhaps the brand could have done a little more on the general finishing of the product, and a greater number of local dimming zones would have reduced blooming.
But these are small details that don't weigh heavily on the general experience of the display which, in my opinion, is perfect for gaming and for the use of multimedia content, or for daily use of the computer.
