If you looked at the Kingroon KP3S Pro without paying too much attention to detail, the compactness of this FDM 3D printer could be misleading. With a 200 x 200 mm printing plate, a clean and no-frills design, and a filament holder that is external to the main structure of the device, what we could define as the updated version of the Titan Extruder to the less attentive eye might seem an entry level model without too many pretensions.
In reality, however, that is not quite the case. Of course, the price also makes it perfect for those who want to start approaching the world of filament 3D printing, but the excellent linear guides on the two axes, the titanium extruder and the extremely silent motors that are able to continue a print should (for example) go out of power, make it one of the most interesting compact 3D printers on the market. We've been trying it for a while and we want to tell you about our experience.
Kingroon KP3S Pro Review: Compact, Accurate and Affordable Direct Drive FDM 3D Printer
Package contents and assembly
The packaging of the Kingroon KP3S Pro includes everything you need to start using your printer right away. The nice thing about this model is that, also due to its compactness, not only will it arrive at home in small-sized packages, but assembling it will be a much simpler operation than that required with the vast majority of other 3D printers.
Kingroon KP3S Pro in fact, it will be delivered (almost) pre-assembled: to connect all the elements and immediately put this 3D printer into operation, it will take about 15 minutes and everyone, absolutely everyone, will be able to complete the operation without going crazy among a thousand screws, washers and cables.
Design and features
Let's start immediately from the dimensions, because never as in the case of Kingroon KP3S Pro they will be a factor that could influence the choice to buy it or not. As already mentioned we are talking about a decidedly compact 3D printer, with a size of 32x32x36 cm and a rather important net weight. It is one of those perfect models for those who, for example, do not have much space to devote to these types of products but who, at the same time, do not want to give up a printing plate which (proportionally) could even be considered rather large: the print volume is in fact 21x21x20 cm, which means that with the Kingroon KP3S Pro it will be possible to print objects of rather generous dimensions.
In addition, despite the compact size, it is stable enough and the rather rigid structure is able to support without any problem vibrations during printing. Good idea to place the support for the filament in a structure totally disconnected from the 3D printer even if, to be honest, the plastic with which it is made is quite light even if it is a structure that manages to do its job very well .
On the Z axis there is then an extruder with a titanium drive and a transmission ratio of 3:1 which is able to handle different FDM materials, such as PLA, or flexible materials such as TPU and PETG and filaments without problems abrasive and strong like ABS and nylon.
And just to aim for maximum compactness, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the Kingroon KP3S Pro integrates a power supply in its structure, which means that in addition to the printer and the filament support, there will be no other volumes on the work surface that could get in the way.
The inputs for the USB cable and for the microSD reader have been positioned on the side, and the whole printer is managed by a 2.4” touch display with which 8 languages can be set.
Good cable management and the printing plate is heated, in short, from a constructive point of view there is poco to say. There Kingroon KP3S Pro it is based on two very clear concepts, which it manages to follow almost perfectly: compactness and quality of materials.
Going back to the features, as already mentioned, it is an FDM model that might seem rather classic for its price range, but which stands out not only for the heated bed (a feature that is not so obvious in these figures), but also for the extruder which is made of titanium, is 0.4 mm and has a layer of about 0.1 mm.
A 32-bit motherboard is hidden under the body, and the movements of the guides are entrusted to TMC2225 drivers, in fact not very different from the TMC 2208, which are always fluid and very silent.
Finally, a clarification: together with the printer, the y-axis update kit is also sent, which significantly improves the print quality and which is accompanied by an assembly tutorial that can be found directly in the manufacturer's YouTube channel.
Software and print quality
Kingroon KP3S Pro it does not have its own slicer, but it is integrated in the microSD card included in the package Ultimaker Cure, a rather functional and easy to use free software, available for both Windows and macOS. So, for example, if you wanted to download a free 3D model from one of the many online platforms, you should first process it with Cura, and then save to the microSD.
Through Cura it is also possible to modify the thickness of the layer, the filling density (and the relative pattern), the temperature and the printing speed and much more. And after setting everything correctly, just click the icon at the bottom right and save the file on the microSD by clicking on "Slice". And that's it.
In terms of print quality, there is poco to say: for how much it costs and how compact it is, it is decidedly good. Given the rather broad support for different types of filaments, with the Kingroon KP3S Pro there will be no particular limits in the printing phase.
What surprised me then is the accuracy, definitely above all expectations both because we are talking about an FDM 3D printer and because of its compact size. From this point of view Kingroon has done a really good job: the print is almost always cohesive, with no point where thinned layers are noticeable.
Selling price and conclusions
The sale price of the Kingroon KP3S Pro it is 249,00 dollars but, through the box below, you can buy it at a discount for 189,00 dollars (ie about 173 euros at current exchange rates) thanks to a coupon. And yes, even if at first glance it might seem like an unpretentious 3D printer for beginners, in reality in our tests it surprised us in practically all respects, especially considering that it is an extremely compact and economical model.
It's great for beginners, but I'm convinced that even more experienced users will appreciate this model because of its precision and, why not, its compactness and silence. Assembly is also child's play.
