Before we start going into the details of the DJI Mini 3 Pro, a premise must be made immediately: in recent times there have been many companies that have called their devices "Pro" but, most likely, the brand's new drone is the only one in which this adjective really makes sense. It's compact, it's safe, it has an improved flight system as well as the camera (which can be rotated to record vertical video). Of course, compared to previous generations the cost has increased, but the DJI Mini 3 Pro definitely raises the bar of the popular series of drones, continuing to maintain a weight under 250 grams.
We've been testing the Fly More Kit version for a few weeks, with the new RC controller (the one that integrates the display and doesn't need any smartphone) and despite the winter weather conditions, the constant pouring rain that is a constant in Avellino, I I'm in love to the point of being able to say without any doubt that the DJI Mini 3 Pro it is the best drone that you can give yourself at Christmas (and not).
DJI Mini 3 Pro RC Fly More Kit review: the light and safe drone that will make you fall in love
The version of the DJI Mini 3 Pro that we received for testing is the RC one accompanied by the Fly More Kit. This means that in addition to the drone, all the accessories and the traditional controller, the package also includes the new RC radio control with display but also a bag for transport, two additional batteries, an adapter to recharge the 3 total batteries that will come out of the kit at the same time, and 4 replacement propellers.
In short, it is a bundle that actually raises the price of the DJI Mini 3 Pro but, once purchased, the only thing you'll need is a microSD. Then you can take it up in the air and start having fun.
Design and materials
Though design-wise, the DJI Mini 3 Pro continues to follow the path (at least dictated) undertaken with the previous generations, there are several very important innovations also from a functional point of view. The gimball, for example, has a totally redesigned design and protrudes a lot from the fuselage of the drone: this new design is essentially due to the fact that DJI Mini 3 Pro it can also record video vertically and to the fact that the tilt angle has been increased, both upwards and downwards, and which can now vary between 60° and -90°.
The positioning of the rear propellers also changes, which are now on a slightly higher axis than the front ones, and the positioning of the sensors for slowing down obstacles, which work on three ways, is certainly much more conspicuous than that (almost non-existent ) of the previous generation.
In any case, although the brand declares that the drone weighs 249 grams, in reality the real weight we detected is of 247 grams, while the dimensions of the device when closed are 145×90×62 mm and 251×362×70 mm when open and with the propellers mounted.
Radio control and reception
Anyone who chooses to buy the full bundle will probably receive the most important upgrade thanks to the new remote control. Why yes, the innovations introduced with the drone itself are not all, and already from the first use you realize that the new DJI RC is really able to make a difference.
Primarily thanks to the integrated 5.5-inch display which not only makes the remote control itself much more robust, but also does not require the use of external peripherals. And it's a very comfortable thing. It integrates four antennas as well as a microSD slot and yes, personally I prefer it to the DJI RC Pro especially for the weight: it weighs only 385 grams, against the 680 grams of the other version.
It is an ergonomic controller, comfortable to hold in the hand, with all the controls at the right point and the lower keys programmable at will: personally, for example, I associated one of the lower keys with the gimbal rotation function so as to be able to record the vertical videos. It also allows in an incredibly natural way, to control the inclination of the gimbal and the zoom factor, which we will discuss shortly.
The panel used is also of the highest quality and, although in terms of peak brightness it does not reach the values of the RC Pro, visibility is more than guaranteed even in direct light conditions.
In a nutshell, those of DJI have integrated a sort of Android smartphone into the controller, which is animated by a version of the Google operating system clearly customized by the brand, in which essentially only DJI Fly can be used, that is the application that we have learned to familiar with all other drones from DJI.
And it is therefore through the controller with the integrated app that you can take advantage of all the software features of the drone. For example, with the DJI Mini 3 Pro ActiveTrack 4.0 has been introduced, which improves the accuracy in tracking subjects and objects during automated flights and which can be used through the usual three modes: Spotlight, POI (point of interest) and ActiveTrack.
Then there are Master Shots, which can be used through the typical automatic modes such as Dronie, Circle, Helix, Boomerang, Rocket and Asteroid, and it is also possible to take advantage of very scenic shooting modes, such as Hyperlapse and Panorama, which can be recorded in different resolutions.
In short, it is true that the DJI RC Smart Controller is a major upgrade, which involves a significant increase in spending, but its integrated 700-nit screen and its ergonomics will profoundly improve the flying experience, both for experienced people and for less experienced ones.
Photo and video
DJI Mini 3 Pro it also makes great strides in terms of camera. The sensor used is a 48 megapixel CMOS 1/1.3” large capable of recording video in HDR at the maximum resolution of 4k at 60 fps. The lens has a fixed f/1.7 aperture and is the equivalent of a 24mm with a field of view of about 82°. It's not extremely wide angle, it's true, but it's a more than adequate field of view, above all considering the presence of the propellers which with a more pronounced FoV would have appeared in the frame.
Everything is mounted on a three-axis motorized stabilizer which, as already mentioned, can also rotate vertically in order to record videos ready for sharing on various social networks, without having to perform any crop, reframe and with practically zero loss of quality.
It can take photos in several modes, including 48 megapixel single photo, brust, panorama (which can consist of 3 or 5 images), timed shots, but it does not have the Smart Photo mode introduced with the Mavic Air 2.
As for video quality, it is useless to get around it: from this point of view the DJI Mini 3 Pro it is the best drone under 250 grams. There is poco to do. And it is also thanks to the very high bitrate of 150 Mbps, which can be exploited using the H.264 and H.265 codecs. The frame rate drops to 30 fps when recording HDR video, and if you want to record images with a frame rate and resolution higher than 2.3k at 30 fps, the FocusTrack and APAS modes will deactivate, making it impossible to automatically follow subjects or avoid obstacles when they record images at 4k at 60 FPS.
Poco bad, because the quality you get using the maximum resolution and maximum framerate is exceptional, and it is worth the price of losing these autonomous flight features.
DJI Mini 3 Pro it also has a 4k zoom, which however is digital: in 4K the magnification factor is halved to 2x, while in 2,7k it drops to 3x. It is also possible to take advantage of the LOG D-Cinelike color profile, with which it will then be necessary to apply a more precise color in post-production.
Basically, thanks to all these features, the quality of the images captured with the DJI Mini 3 Pro is clearly superior not only to the previous generation of Minis, but also to those we got with the Mavic Air 2, and it is even in low light conditions (or late at night): with this drone, you can take home with ease , images in many cases without any noise or clumping. Really exceptional.
ISO handling is undoubtedly excellent and does not generate any additional noise in raw files up to the maximum value of ISO 6400. Colors also remain very natural, meaning that you can shoot with confidence at any ISO setting.
The details and sharpness of the shot are excellent during video shooting and using ND filters and the right settings you can produce smooth and high quality movies, but be careful: even if you buy the Fly More Kit, the set of ND filters will purchased separately, but it is an essential purchase if you intend to shoot video of a good standard.
What still doesn't drive me crazy is the drone's built-in memory, which is of poco more than 1 GB: of course, it can be a good "buffer" if you forget to bring the microSD with you, but at this point (and at this price) the brand should have at least integrated a 4GB memory.
In flight DJI Mini 3 Pro show all muscles. And it does it with far less noise than the previous generation or any Air. The fluidity in the air is what you would expect from a DJI product, but what leaves you speechless is the stability and simplicity of piloting, which are perfect even for less experienced "dronists".
Despite its super compact size, the DJI Mini 3 Pro it is able to manage the flight without any problem even with gusts of wind up to 40 Km/h, a condition in which, of course, the battery life will be sacrificed a lot, but for a safe flight it is the minimum price to pay.
And security is precisely one of the weapons of this DJI Mini 3 Pro. Compared to the previous generation, the anti-collision sensors are more numerous, and the drone is able to detect obstacles practically (almost) at 360 degrees: in a nutshell, if the system detects any obstacles (even trees with thin branches) it will stop immediately avoiding impact.
In short, flying with the DJI Mini 3 Pro it's really fun and comfortable, and the OcuSync 3.0 transmission system generates a video signal that is not only stable, but also extremely resolute even in difficult conditions: we tried it in an area with many buildings, even flying it behind the buildings themselves, and We have never encountered any problems whatsoever.
There's nothing to say, it's an exceptional drone that focuses on flight stability and video quality, it's perfect for amateurs, but the stabilizer that can rotate even at -90° makes it excellent even for more professional uses: it makes me think of a use in the construction field, perhaps in the inspection of roofs or roofing.
Improvements also from the point of view of battery and flight time. DJI Mini 3 Pro it uses the new 2.453 mAh Intelligent Flight Battery which, despite weighing only 80.5 grams, is able to guarantee about 35 minutes of flight.
Of course, with drones the autonomy factor is highly variable based on the climatic conditions, but even with the presence of winds at about 30 km/h, the improvement compared to previous generations is considerable: in our tests, with this wind, we were able to use the drone for about 25 minutes on a single charge.
If you want (outside Europe) you can buy the Flight Battery Plus kit which has a capacity of 3.850 mAh and increases the flight time to 47 minutes, but carries the weight of the DJI Mini 3 Pro over 250 g making it pass to the A3 weight category.
Price and considerations
The versions available for purchase of the DJI Mini 3 Pro there are 3: it is possible to buy the drone without a remote control at the official price of 749,00 euros, or you can buy it with the traditional remote control for 839,00 euros while the more complete version, i.e. the one with the DJI RC remote control with integrated display, it costs 1009 euros. But always keep the box below to access the various discounts available.
And yes, it is an expensive drone that is only “mini” in size and weight. But it is a product that has positively surprised us thanks to its design, simplicity and safety in flight, the thousands of software functions and the excellent RC radio control. All features that make it perfect for both beginners and professional pilots, both for hobby purposes and for work purposes.
In short, the DJI Mini 3 Pro it is undoubtedly one of the best drones around, and not only among those produced by DJI.
