Razr 2022 review: crease-free display and powerful hardware, but something is still missing

If there is a brand that has recently shown a marked change of course, it is Motorola. We have seen it with its latest smartphones, the few on the market to be introduced with correct and never excessive positioning, and we also find it in the commitment that the brand has put into the software with which, in addition to a very pleasant customization, for some models are guaranteed 3 major updates and 4 years of security patches.

Well, the new Motorola Razr 2022 fits right into this strategy: flexible display at 144 Hz, new hinge that closes (almost) without a gap and with an almost invisible crease, form factor much closer to that of traditional smartphones, are all characteristics which, on the paper, would suggest that it is the best foldable spartphone out there. But will it be like that?

Motorola Razr 2022 review: many steps forward

Design and materials

Okay, what the Motorola Razr 2022 has totally abandoned all those iconic references of the historic smartphone of the early 2000s is a known thing to all. There is no longer that large lower chin, and the squared notch disappears. And, to be honest, together with these elements the Motorola Razr 2022 it also loses a bit of personality, perhaps also because it is only available in black and totally devoid of color combinations that can make it more attractive.

However, it is true that Motorola Razr 2022 it is much more comfortable to use than the previous generation and the greater weight and dimensions are justified by the presence of a larger battery, top-of-the-range hardware and thicker cameras. In short, it is a completely different smartphone.

There is also a new closing mechanism, a new hinge, which allows the two sections to close almost parallel, and to be used at different angles a bit like we saw in Samsung's Z Flip 4. From this point of view, however, I would have expected a more marked step forward in terms of construction: ok, the crease has been made decidedly less marked, but the hinge is quite noisy and is not as stable as the one seen in the South Korean smartphone, the internal display then also has a plastic film that suffers a lot from fingerprints.

Externally, then, there is the large (but not very large) display protected by Gorilla Glass 5, which Motorola wanted to consider as a screen in all respects, absolutely not limiting its use, obtaining a result that is somewhat ' puzzled me. But we'll get to that.

It is an IP 52 certified smartphone and integrates a fingerprint sensor integrated into the power button located next to the volume rocker. And here again, here we go again, we could have done better: in my opinion, the power key is placed too high up to make it comfortable to unlock the device, and the two volume control keys are not only still further up, but they are particularly small and awkward to use.

As for the display, there is poco to criticize al Motorola Razr 2022. Open the shell, you find yourself with a very bright 6.7-inch pOLED panel with a 144 Hz refresh rate with here, it is always good to remember, you can only take advantage of 120 Hz when interacting with the interface. And it is useless to go around it: it is an excellent panel, able to guarantee exceptional vision quality and when you are in direct light conditions the brightness boost allows an equally clear vision thanks to the 1013 nits that we have detected in our tests. And, let's face it, it is only in this circumstance that the presence of the crease can be slightly perceived.

In short, Motorola Razr 2022 it is the only foldable smartphone that can be officially purchased in Italy in which the fold is practically imperceptible, which however has been a little spoiled by the presence of extremely thick bezels, on which Motorola should have worked better.

And it is precisely the aspect ratio of the screen that made the Motorola Razr 2022 much wider than Samsung's Z Flip 4. A choice that has very important pros and cons. Given the aspect ratio of its internal display (which is 21:9), the Motorola foldable when open is actually much more awkward to use than the Samsung counterpart (which has a 22:9 screen), however it is true that it is precisely the proportions of the display that allow you to see full-screen content by minimizing the presence of side bands and also make typing more comfortable. In essence, I prefer the choice made by Motorola over that of Samsung.

Then there is the external screen, which uses a 2.7-inch OLED panel with which it is possible to interact quite well with all the apps installed on the device. And when I say all, I really mean all: through the settings it is possible to choose to make practically any app installed on the smartphone bootable, which led me to think one thing: it is true, it is better to have a smartphone without limitations rather than a product in which the brand decides what can be done and what not, but at this point it is true that the external display is very comfortable and improved in everything, but in my opinion it is still too small to be able to use it without any limitations.

Hardware and Performance

To animate Motorola Razr 2022 a Snapdragon 8+ Gen. 1 takes care of it, flanked by 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory. A configuration that we know very well by now, more than enough to perform all the tasks that can be asked of a mobile device without problems. Opening games and applications is very fast, the reaction speed with interactions is immediate and there is nothing you cannot ask the device to do. In short, from the hardware point of view, Motorola has made a significant step forward compared to the old Razrs which, let us remember, did not use top-of-the-range processors and were not free from very annoying slowdowns and lag. So yes, Motorola Razr 2022 it is a top of the range in all respects.

And as you will notice from the AnTuTu stress test (top photo) the temperature management is equally good, which is almost a "miracle" considering how cramped the internal hardware architecture can be given the foldable nature of the device and the fact that practically Motorola has decided to really limit poco the operating frequencies of the various cores and their performance.

In short, if you want to take full advantage of the Snap 8+ Gen. 1, then the Motorola Razr 2022 it's the smartphone to get: it performed even better than the Galaxy Z Flip 4 at times.

The audio in the capsule is good, as is the stereo audio, the connection to cellular networks and to WiFi 6 networks (but not WiFi 6e) is good, the absence of wireless charging is very bad: this is probably the biggest drawback of Achilles of Motorola Razr 2022 and honestly it's a choice that not only do I not agree with, but I just can't explain myself: a device of this quality, with this hardware and this workmanship, deserves the possibility of being recharged wirelessly. Also because it is not possible to sell a product for more than 1000 euros without wireless charging. Misstep made by Motorola.

Before getting into the technical about the cameras, a clarification: from this point of view Motorola Razr 2022 it has improved a lot compared to the previous generation, but it is not the smartphone to buy if you value the quality of photos and videos which are much better in the Z Flip 4.

The main camera is a 50-megapixel f/1.9 with a 1/1.55-inch sensor that yes, it is relatively large and much better than the one used in the previous generation. It is a respectable camera, capable of giving good quality shots and with the right dynamic range, both in good light conditions and with night mode, which however is limited by a very important factor: the software.

Motorola still has a lot of optimization work to do on the software that manages the cameras, which not only isn't free from bugs, but it makes shooting too slow due to too long a processing time, which risks producing images with too much camera shake. because whoever takes the photo is "deceived" that it has been taken, when in reality the real shot takes place after a few very small moments.

And if the problem absolutely does not arise with the main camera, when we talk about the 13 megapixel ultra-wide camera things get even more complicated. Let me be clear, the presence of an ultra wide angle (absent in previous generations) is extremely welcome, but the qualitative gap between the two sensors is clear. With this camera, during the day it is possible to take very enjoyable shots, but at night the images generated could be slightly pastel and with a very dynamic range management poco "dynamic".

And this qualitative gap is also seen in the recording of videos which, if one wanted to use all the lenses, would be limited to 1080p at 30 fps. And it's really a shame, considering that the main camera is even capable of recording in 8k, and that the images produced are not bad in terms of quality.

The front camera has 32 megapixels and is of good quality, and you can clearly use the external display as a supplementary viewfinder when taking photos: in the settings it is possible to have it activated automatically each time the camera is started, and it is a very convenience that I would like to see introduced in Samsung smartphones as well.

Motorola Razr 2022 arrives with Android 12 customized by Motorola's graphical interface, which continues to be the most consistent, pleasant and organized of the entire Android panorama. All the additional functions are hidden in the moto App, with which even less expert people can customize their smartphone down to the smallest detail.

But with leaflets it could take longer. Basically, the only really useful customization to the foldable smartphone you will use is the one relating to the camera interface which, once the smartphone is folded and placed on a surface, will adapt so as to show the preview in the vertical section and which works well even if you have to make video calls.

On the other hand, the Ready For is excellent which, both wirelessly and with video output via USB-C, gets better and better. For those unfamiliar with it, it is a desktop interface studied in detail and super simple to use, with which by connecting an external keyboard and mouse you can use your smartphone as a sort of desktop PC on larger monitors. Ok, there is still the limit for streaming content from the most important platforms, which cannot be used in this mode, but in terms of productivity, Motorola's desktop interface is among the best ever.

Not bad considering that in essence you have a relatively compact folding smartphone in your pocket, which you can then use as a computer if necessary.

Motorola Razr 2022 finally, it is expected to receive 3 major updates and 4 years of security patches: Android 13 should arrive in Q1 2023.

Battery autonomy and charging

As for autonomy, the point is simple: it is known that folding clamshell smartphones are subject to a series of compromises when it comes to battery capacity, and with its 3500 mAh Motorola Razr 2022 is no exception.

Review Motorola Razr 2022 5G foldable smartphone hardware test performance camera display charging who sells buy price discount italy software

Basically, a power user will hardly be able to get to the end of the day without having to recharge the battery, and those 200 mAh less than the battery used in the Z Flip 4 make themselves felt especially when it comes to web browsing or gaming in 3D.

Poco bad though, because with the 30w wired fast charge, which is not very fast but it is not among the slowest either, in about an hour of charging you can go from 0% to 100%.

Let's spread a pitiful veil on the lack of wireless charging.

Price and considerations

The selling price of Motorola Razr 2022 is 1199 euros on Amazon and yes, it could be considered as the piece of the puzzle that Motorola was missing to complete the excellent rebranding work that the brand is carrying out. Compared to the previous generation, progress has been made in all sectors, and actually the only limit to the comfort of the device is its width, which however makes it one of the best foldables out there for multimedia content.

Compared to the South Korean counterpart it is still a "slightly rough" product, this is true, but the real question mark is this: a crease-free display and a frame with (almost) zero gap can justify the shortcomings of the camera compartment and the the absence of wireless charging in a top-of-the-range smartphone of 2022?
