Yesterday was not just the day of the Redmi K50 series, since there was the official announcement of Honor Magic 4 Ultimate. A smartphone not entirely new, given that it is an increased variant of the already known Magic 4 Pro. We are faced with a smartphone that presents itself as a reference point for the your phone, thanks to a hardware sector of the highest level. In addition to being driven by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, it contains a ISP custom to offer more advanced multimedia processing: but let's see in detail how his photographic sector is made.

DxOMark rewards the Honor Magic 4 Ultimate camera with first place

First of all, here are the Honor Magic 4 Ultimate sensors:

  • Primary 23 mm from 50 MP f/1.6, 1 / 1.12 ″ sensor, 1.4 μm pixel, 8P lens, OIS, PDAF + laser
  • Wide angle 11 mm from 64 MP f/2.2, 126 ° FoV, 1 / 2.0 ″ sensor, 0.7 μm pixels, 7P lens, PDAF
  • 90mm telephoto lens 64 MP f/3.5, 3.5x optical zoom, 1 / 2.0 ″ sensor, 0.7 μm pixels, OIS, PDAF

In addition to the primary sensor, one of the largest around (the same as Xiaomi mi 11 ultra), there's a Flicker sensor to prevent neon artifacts, a sensor with advanced 8-channel spectrum (disabled on the DxOMark unit) to acquire more light information to improve clarity and dynamic range and a sensor dToF 8 × 8 for laser autofocus. Honor adds the use of blending algorithms to enhance detail for telephoto photos, the quality of which is also improved with the combination of OIS and Super Resolution AI.

The result of all this is an Honor Magic 4 Ultimate that captures excellent images, as the score of 146 points which makes it immediately snap into first position. Wide dynamic range, good exposure and with a nice white balance: thanks to the size of the sensor, photos captured in low light conditions enjoy poco noise, also given the fast and reliable focusing. In this way, even at night the exposure is precise thanks to the compromise between details and noise. The only defects reported by DxOMark concern low contrast and muted colors in some HDR shots, some loss of detail in the shadows and fusion artifacts on the secondary sensors.

As regards the telephoto, the images have good detail throughout the available focal length, especially at medium range. The performance of the wide-angle lens, with poco noise and correct exposure levels. If we talk about alternative modes, the photos in Portrait mode offer a good isolation of the subject from the background: also thanks to the help of a ToF laser sensor.

As anticipated, then, Honor Magic 4 Ultimate is enriched by a ISP custom 28.8 TOPS which processes 20-bit photos, offers support for 4K night mode with real-time preview, Magic-Log2 video with dynamic range increased by 15%, 3D LUT and support for 4K 60 fps at 10-bit in Log format. However, the ISP would not be active in the firmware tested by DxOMark.

But apart from that, the recorded videos have nice colors, good exposure values and white balance, even in low-light contexts. The details are high and the noise is low and the stabilization is very effective. At the same time, the dynamic range is slightly limited (especially on the highlights), there are some artifacts (changes in hue and ghosting) and instability in sharpness and white balance.

The turn of Honor Magic 4 Pro | Update 01/06

After the non plus ultra model, too Honor Magic 4 Pro was evaluated by DxOMark, again with regard to the camera. Let's start with the hardware sector:

  • Primary 23 mm from 50 MP f/1.8, 1 / 1.56 ″ sensor, 1.0 μm pixel, PDAF + laser
  • Wide angle 13 mm from 50 MP f/2.2, 122 ° FoV, 1 / 2.5 ″ sensor, PDAF
  • 90mm telephoto lens 64 MP f/3.5, 3.5x optical zoom, 1 / 2.0 ″ sensor, 0.7 μm pixels, OIS, PDAF

Again, then we find additional sensors such as the dToF 8 × 8 for laser autofocus and the Flicker sensor against neon artifacts. On the other hand, the 8-channel spectrum is absent.

The Pro model does not reach the peaks of the Ultimate one, but still manages to place itself within the top 10 ranking of DxOMark. When compared, Honor Magic 4 Pro performs worse for exposure, autofocus stability and low-light noise management for photos and videos, also thanks to theabsence of optical stabilization on the primary sensor. For the rest, positive aspects remain as regards the quality of the photos in general, between exposure and dynamic range, detail for shadows and highlights and color management.

Here's how the ranking is updated top 10 of the best camera phones according to DxOMark:
