I've seen very few presentations in which a single device has been launched since I've been in this environment. Usually, in fact, all the various brands tend to show the public the entire new generation line up which often includes more than one device. This is as true for accessories as it is for other products such as smartphones. And it is precisely in the latter case that we usually find ourselves commenting on the release of several top-of-the-range phones. As a final goal, of course, there is always to capture the largest possible share of users.
With Xiaomi 12X the company wanted to offer a valid alternative to its customers in the mid-range, by launching a smartphone equipped with a Qualcomm SoC Snapdragon 870. On the other hand, moreover, we see how the brand has opted for the introduction of a design practically identical to that shown on Xiaomi 12, one of Xiaomi's flagship devices. This, therefore, contributes even more to increasing the chances of success of this product.
Xiaomi has grown a lot in recent years, expanding its market to several other countries besides China. This factor has contributed to slightly modify some choices in the final products, especially those that officially arrive in our territory. In addition to different software, but only in certain respects, the brand has often proposed slightly less "oriental" smartphones here, saving us all those services that we do not use. Beyond this aspect, however, the software it is always the same and the performances the same. Therefore, let's take a closer look at the technical specifications of this unit and its operation during the most common daily life.
Xiaomi 12X review, almost a top of the range
Let's say that at the moment we will only consider the Chinese variant, the only one that we have really had the opportunity to test at the moment. At least on the packaging, however, it seems that the brand has aligned the two countries, also offering us few innovations. Taking a look at the sales package, therefore, we notice the presence of the following accessories:
- Xiaomi 12X;
- short instruction manual, also in Italian;
- transparent soft silicone cover;
- pin for removing the SIM slot;
- warranty certificate.
You were expecting, perhaps, a richer initial endowment but this time the company has decided to follow in the footsteps of one of the main Silicon Valley companies that has been offering this type of corporate policy for years. Going to take a look at the iPhone, in fact, we find practically the same type of accessories supplied in the package.
Design & Materials
You have heard many times that quality often hides even in the smallest details. I therefore believe that the care that Xiaomi has reserved for the realization of this device is truly appreciable. They are all quality materials, including frames in metal and back cover in glass. The latter, among other things, offers a satin effect that is paired with the side frame, making this device one of the most slippery of this year. I must admit that more than once I have risked it falling, even in apparently calm situations. Like Xiaomi 12, however, this unit shows dimensions of 152,7 x 69,9 x 8,16 mm, with an overall weight of approximately 175 grams. Even if it is not a featherweight, this device immediately captured me for its maneuverability, resulting rather compact in the hand. We are obviously not on a par with devices of the caliber of the iPhone 13 mini but, in several respects, the form factor is quite satisfactory.
Taking a look at all the various components, we see how the right side hosts the volume balance and On / off button. Below, starting from the left, there is one of the two audio speakers, the entrance USB Type-C, microphone main and the SIM slot. Let's see how at the top, however, the company has decided to position the second stereo speaker, microphone for the suppression of environmental noise and IR sensor (infrared sensor). I have to note, therefore, very few defects on this machine in terms of construction, being almost flawless in all its parts. I would have only opted for a slightly larger display, which ultimately would fill the two frames (upper and lower) which, in the end, are more visible.
In addition to the handle, facilitated by the curved side edges, this terminal highlights a good weight balance. I would like to point out, however, the presence of a rather bulky rear photographic compartment. Not so much in terms of size, but more in terms of depth. This, in fact, protrudes several millimeters from the profile of the smartphone and there is no cover at the moment that can fill this gap. Inside the photographic module, however, reside a main 50MP sensor, a Sony IMX766. Observing the Xiaomi 12 data sheet, therefore, we notice the exact same configuration. Finally, we conclude with the two secondary lenses, therefore a 13MP wide angle and a 5MP macro sensor, as well as the double LED flash on the right.
One aspect emerges from the technical specifications: Xiaomi 12X is a beautiful phone to look at. On board, in fact, it mounts a display OLED da 6,28 " with resolution Full HD + (1080 x 2400 pixels), refresh rate equal to 120Hz, aspect ratio of 20:9, Dolby Vision, HDR10 + e 1100 nits of maximum brightness. There is, of course, a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection.
With excellent viewing angles and saturated colors, this smartphone is the perfect multimedia device. From the settings, then, it is possible to modify various parameters of this panel, setting the calibration of the background tone as well as the reading mode, the font and the display update frequency. And it is thanks to this last option that we can enjoy a fluid and snappy device in every situation, with the 120Hz that help not poco in the display of all the contents on the screen. This refresh rate, in any case, can be forcedly set to 60Hz and 120Hz, or alternatively you can decide to opt for the option that automatically sets this factor according to the different needs of the moment.
I have not encountered any particular problems with the front panel, even in the writing phase. I must admit, however, that we initially tested the device with the China version of the MIUI, but once the xiaomi.eu the situation has improved significantly on the optimization side. This means, therefore, that small slowdowns and some bugs are no longer so frequent, which affected their use with the keyboard. Net of all this, in any case, there are no light bleeding phenomena around the selfie camera, as well as along all corners of the display.
If I had to advise you right now the unlocking system that I most preferred on this smartphone, I would tell you to use only the biometric sensor placed under the display. Even if it is not one of the most lightning fast among those around it is precise and fast, never missing a beat. It is also located in a rather favorable position which makes it easy to use, even when the screen is completely off.
As a second system, as usual, there is space for face recognition in 2D which, as always, I hardly even take into consideration. In addition to being poco safe, in fact, it is also rather uncomfortable and slow, especially when compared with the fingerprint sensor. There is almost no comparison on the release speed, not to mention the abyss that divides these two systems in terms of reliability.
Hardware & Performance
From the characteristics it emerges that a SoC resides under the body Snapdragon 870 5G, therefore an octa-core unit made at 7nm configured as follows: 1 x 585 GHz Kryo 3,2 + 3 x 585 GHz Kryo 2,42 + 4 x 585 GHz Kryo 1,80. To complete this hardware package we find 8GB di LPDDR4x RAM e 128GB di internal memory (UFS 3.1). Then there is the GPU, or one Adreno 650 which takes care of managing everything related to the graphic part.
As anticipated, we have not tested a software version optimized for our market. For some time, however, on the latest versions of MIUI it is possible to unlock a setting that allows us to make Google services "active". By the way, we have also released a video on our YouTube channel that I invite you to retrieve. Beyond this aspect, however, I think that Xiaomi 12X is an excellent device and offers true top-of-the-range performance, without too many sacrifices. Let's say that most users, with standard use, would be amazed by trying this product. But not because it's particularly lightning-fast but simply because the value for money is captivating. We can, therefore, manage many open tabs on Chrome without problems, as well as surf the net or on any application such as Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, Whatsapp and much more. Even in multitasking, therefore, the various windows are managed rather well and smoothly, even if the same problem always arises: Xiaomi 12X manages RAM in a very aggressive way, suddenly closing even the most recent applications, often having to reload them. from scratch. This, therefore, has a certain impact on the battery and the performance of the smartphone.
Where the device provides the best performance is in the gaming phase, pushing the Snapdragon 870 really to the maximum. Here, therefore, Call of Duty Mobile it is displayed with maximum details and with a fluidity that is enviable to many other models, offering a rather stable frame-rate. Even in ranked matches, therefore, you will have no problem competing at the highest levels, thanks to its extreme reactivity.
Xiaomi 12X has been in our hands for some time. Having initially obtained a device with Chinese firmware, however, we were forced to wait longer than necessary to unlock it. This was useful, therefore, to install an interface closer to us, integrating the xiaomi.eu version MIUI 13.0.13. In fact, at the time of writing this review, the global version has not yet been released.
Despite everything, however, it seems that the version we installed on this smartphone works quite well. We are, therefore, more or less on the stability levels of the Chinese one initially designed for this product. As always, then, with the introduction of this interface, the phone has been cleaned of all those absolutely useless applications on our territory. In any case, we find the various security apps, emails, calculators and everything you need to turn on the device and be immediately operational. I must admit, then, that I have always encountered the usual small inaccuracies and some bugs, which in any case have not ruined the experience. There are, then, many settings that allow you to change almost every aspect of the device, being able to take advantage of all the features of the MIUI 13 which, especially under the graphic profile, does not show any big news.
Behind the front display stands a rather minimal photographic sector, characterized by the presence of three different sensors. Let's see, therefore, how a main objective is located Sony IMX766 da 50 MP, therefore a unit of 1 / 1,56 ”, f / 1,88 and OIS (optical image stabilization). To accompany this lens, then, we have a camera ultra-wide-angle da 13 MP with f / 2,4 aperture and 123 ° FOV, as well as an additional camera from 5 MP with f / 2,4, mainly used for macro.
Di day this smartphone does not disappoint expectations, offering noteworthy shots in almost every situation. Perhaps this is one of the best smartphones tested in the last period, at least considering its same price range. At this level, in fact, the competition has not yet managed to do better in some points, first of all with daytime shots. Even if the colors tend slightly to warm tones, therefore, the device still manages to offer a good overall quality, with a photographic noise poco marked and more than discreet details. Artificial and natural lights are handled well, overexposing the image only in very rare cases. With automatic HDR, in fact, this danger has been almost completely eliminated. On the other hand, however, the wide-angle sensor is not equally up to the Sony IMX766, however, returning a good overall result. Even if the details lose more than a few points, these are more than good photos for sharing on social networks. I was disappointed only a little by the telemacro, which is unable to acquire too much information by returning photos without depth.
Going to observe the night shots we notice some more inaccuracies, while remaining above the sufficiency. Xiaomi 12X is always fast in focusing, even in the evening, showing a good balance of artificial lights and a decent management of whites. In the most adverse situations, then, the Night Mode comes to our rescue, a mode that arranges different aspects of the image in a few hundredths of a second, returning a much more balanced shot. In any case, I do not recommend using the ultra-wide-angle camera, mostly due to the poor quality.
Taking a look at the front, we notice the presence of one selfie camera da 32 MP with f / 2,45 aperture. Analyzing the shots, I think the company could have done something better in this respect. During the day, in fact, the sensor manages to collect a good number of details, without emphasizing some aspects of the image. From here, therefore, the photos turn out to be rather flat, without the minimum depth. At night, however, there is absolutely no complain, especially in the face of what is proposed by the competition. Here, then, the camera manages to do a good job, even in portrait mode. Let's say, then, that the depth of field control works pretty well.
With this phone we can record up to a resolution equal to 8K (7680 x 4320) a 24fps. From this point of view I have to admit that the quality is quite decent, without excelling in any particular aspect. Even decreasing this value, passing from the 4K (3840 x 2160) a 60fps, the situation does not improve drastically, always showing good image stabilization and excellent autofocus.
Audio & Connectivity
In addition to the NFC module, now indispensable in today's world, this Xiaomi 12X integrates the Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS L1 + L5 / Galileo: E1 + E5a / GLONASS: G1 / Beidou / NavIC: L5. But not only that, because outside it is also possible to take advantage of 5G, which with the Fastweb network has almost never caused me reception problems. I must also admit, however, that this device is not one of the most stable in this regard, sometimes losing the connection for a few moments. Inside the walls of the house, however, the device is much more stable and constant, allowing us to navigate even in the slightly more covered areas of the house. Regarding all the other sensors, however, I have nothing to report.
As for audio we are not in bad shape, relying on a stereo system equipped with speaker developed in collaboration with Harman / Kardon. I must say, therefore, that from this partnership was born a device capable of surprising, with fairly present bass and good management of all medium and high frequencies. Even at maximum volume, then, you never really get the feeling of being in front of a cheap product, but rather a medium-high-end terminal. The same goes for the ear capsule, a component that works quite well here. On the other hand, however, the proximity sensor is still too uncertain, so sometimes there has been some evaluation error.
Under the body resides a battery from 4.500 mAh which, with an average intense use, manages to take us until the evening without any problem. Difficult to download this device, however, under normal conditions. In fact, it happens to arrive until the evening with the battery still at 30%, a sign that the LiquidCool Technology works quite well.
Let's say that using the device for real, you can aspire to take advantage of the screen of this smartphone for about 13 consecutive hours, without hitches. Even if the phone runs out of charge earlier than expected, no problem: the brand has added a power pack wall from 67W, so you can go from 10 to 100% in poco less than 25 minutes.

Even in the face of what we have seen in this review, I believe that Xiaomi 12X is a candidate to be the first real best buy of 2022. But this, of course, does not mean that the product is free from problems or bugs. As always, in fact, Xiaomi carries with it a certain number of critical issues that it is difficult to solve in the short term. Despite this, the device is fully functional, light and compact, therefore almost a rarity in this historical moment in the smartphone landscape. It becomes increasingly difficult, therefore, to buy compact devices with good performance, without spending a fortune. You should, therefore, really consider this product, especially for the exceptional value for money.⭐️ Discover the new Weekly Flyer of GizChina with always different exclusive offers and coupons.
