OnePlus 9R review: the middle flagship!

OnePlus 9R

Not everyone will probably know that during the launch event of OnePlus 9 e 9 Pro, the Chinese company showed a third model dedicated exclusively to the Indian market e Chinese: OnePlus 9R. This is characterized by an excellent quality / price ratio and many of you were surprised that Lei Jun's company did not decide to bring it to Europe as well.

Some of the features? Fluid AMOLED Full HD + display with refresh rate a 120 HzChipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 e quick charging a 65W!

We obviously couldn't miss it and in today's review we will tell you about our experience with the new one OnePlus 9R. How did he behave? Will it be a valid alternative to the current top of the range? Let's find out together in the article!

OnePlus 9R review

Unboxing - OnePlus 9R

The sales package is in full OnePlus style, that is, a red box with a slightly rubberized and impact surface. Inside there is the following equipment:

  • OnePlus 9R;
  • silicone cover;
  • 65W fast-charging power supply;
  • USB data cable - USB Type-C;
  • OnePlus manuals and stickers.

Design and construction

From the point of view of the design OnePlus has decided to resume those who are lines of older brothers, in fact, we have a rear camera with similar shapes to OnePlus 9 e 9 Pro, but with fewer sensors. The only thing that is most noticeable are the edges on the front display, but if we also look at the competitors the situation is the same.

OnePlus 9R

La construction and of materials are flawless because the frame is made in aluminum, while the back cover is in glass. This is an aspect that should not be underestimated, as in some ways we can even consider it superior to OnePlus 9 which has a frame in polycarbonate. The structure, however, is very solid and gives a feeling of great compactness and reliability.

OnePlus 9R

Unlike the other models with curved edges, however, it is a little less manageable although it does not have an exaggerated size. We are talking about 161 x 74.1 x 8.4 millimeters for a weight of 189 grams.

On the lower profile we find a dual SIM slot, the main microphone, the USB Type-C input and the system speaker, unlike the opposite one on which only the second microphone is placed. On the right side there is the classic OnePlus switch and the power button, while on the left we find the volume rocker.

I make this immediately two shortcomings: the first is that we don't have any certification against water and dust and the second is that, unlike the older brothers, there is no support for the wireless charging. From this point of view, therefore, we take a step back and we realize that the technical data sheet begins to show different similarities with OnePlus 8T.

Display

OnePlus 9R has a display Fluid AMOLED da 6.55 inches with resolution Full HD + (2400 x 1080 pixels), 20: 9 aspect ratio, 402 PPI density, HDR10 + support, refresh rate a 120 Hz and protection Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

Also this time OnePlus did a great job because the drive aboard the 9R it is of excellent quality thanks to faithfully represented colors, excellent contrast and good maximum brightness. If you are not satisfied enough with the color calibration you can always go to the settings and manage it as you wish.

Within the dedicated menu, in fact, we find lots of personalizations such as the management of the ambient display, edge lighting, Dark mode and much more.

Speaking instead of the refresh rate, among the settings we can also choose the display refresh rate between 60 e 120 Hz, but we do not find the mode that alternates it automatically. Personally I have always used it at 120 Hz and the perception of fluidity it returns is always excellent.

Hardware and Performance

Under the body of the new OnePlus 9R we do not find the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, but mounts one Snapdragon 870 5G, which is inclusive of a Kryo 585 octa-core CPU formed as follows: 1 x 3,2 GHz + 3 x 2,42 GHz + 4 x 1,8 GHz, a GPU Adreno 650 and memories from 8 GB of RAM 128 GB of storage UFS 3.1 not expandable via microSD.

Of course, other memory cuts are also available, for example the 8 / 256 GB and 12 / 256 GB, of which I will still leave you the link for the purchase in flash sale at the end of the article.

As for the performance, nothing to say, it is Snapdragon 870 it is confirmed to be an excellent product that will allow us to move between the various apps without any slowdown. Furthermore, the power assisted by a lean software and a 120 Hz refresh rate will guarantee us aexperience of using high level.

In Gaming I have not encountered any problems even with heavier titles like PUBG o Call of Duty, which are performed at details at most and without noticeable frame drops. Of course, lighter games like Subway Surfers, Clash Royale, Brawl Stars and the like show no criticality.

Il haptic feedback it is good, not very invasive and soft, even if personally I prefer it a little more incisive.

Camera

Here we are at the camera, the moment when you start to notice the most similarities with the OnePlus 8T because the sensors are practically the same, both the front and the rear. In fact, the OnePlus 9R it features a quad-camera with main sensor Sony IMX586 da 48 mega-pixels with aperture f / 1.7, a wide-angle lens da 16 mega-pixels, aperture f / 2.2 and angle from 123 °, for an macro da 5 mega-pixels it's one monochrome da 2 mega-pixels, all of which are accompanied by a PDAF autofocus, a dual LED flash and one OIS stabilizer e ICE CREAM.

OnePlus 9R

In the daytime the shots are characterized by faithfully represented colors, with a good level of detail and well-balanced contrasts. HDR always intervenes properly and the general level of the photographs is very good when compared to its reference range, but obviously it does not reach the results of the current 1000 euro top of the range. I also really liked the natural bokeh in the macros and the wide angles are good although the colors are slightly less saturated.

In the evening, the night mode manages to make the smartphone gain important points, as it will bring out the light where the conditions are very difficult. The optical stabilizer will be an advantage over the main sensor, because it will be able to partially limit the blur effect. Unfortunately this cannot be avoided on wide-angle shots, which also lack brightness.

Frontally we find a camera from 16 mega-pixels with sensor Sony IMX471, f / 2.4 aperture and stabilizer ICE CREAM.

Selfies are very good in optimal light conditions, as they feature level definition and balanced colors, as well as decent light management. In the evening, the quality drops, the digital noise increases and you will have results similar to smartphones in the same price range.

Videos can be recorded up to 4K a 60 e 30 fps and the overall quality is very good thanks to optical stabilization, fast focus and good colors. Let's not forget that there is also recording in night mode which will act very effectively in dark places.

Audio and connectivity

Il OnePlus 9R can boast yes a stereo audio thanks to the support of the ear capsule, as well as from the main speaker. Volume is powerful and the audio has a good yield with good balance of frequencies, although there is always a tendency to favor the highs and mids a little more. Overall, however, I was more than satisfied.

In call the audio is crystal clear and the microphone does its job well. Nothing to say even with the earphones, both wired and not, as we also find support for theaptX e aptX HD, Over which LDAC e AAC.

On the connectivity side, the smartphone obviously supports dual SIM 5G NSA + SA, as well as the 4G +, Bluetooth 5.1, L 'NFC, Android Auto, the Wi-Fi 6, GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS / Beidou / Galileo el 'USB Type-C 3.1 with audio / video output.

In these days of testing OnePlus 9R it performed very well, and I would also like to point out that, despite being a device reserved for the Chinese and Indian market, it owns the 20 band and it does not show uncertainties even in less covered areas. For the rest, excellent performance in satellite navigation and with Bluetooth.

Il fingerprint sensor is situated under the display, this like all the latest OnePlus proves to be accurate and reliable, although it takes a few thousandths of a second longer to unlock than the competition. The latter is supported by it 2D facial release which performs very well in conditions of favorable light and sufficiently in the evening. In totally dark places, however, you will not have problems with a display brightness above 50%.

Software

OnePlus 9R is based on Android 11 with proprietary interface Oxygen OS 11.2.3, a UI that we already know very well by now and that certainly needs no introduction.

In fact, the Chinese company's software has always been characterized by its own almost stock look it's a fluidity and speed out of the ordinary. In daily use you will never notice any bugs or jamming of various kinds and, despite the stock look, the interface is full of customizations.

In addition to those of the display mentioned above, on board are added those relating to the backgrounds, the icon pack, the font, the quick gestures, the alert slider, the Zen Mode, the app locker, the parallel apps and much more. yet.

Autonomy

Under the body of the OnePlus 9R we find a battery from 4500 mAh, which allows us to have one good autonomy. In fact, with medium-intense use I have always obtained an average of about 5 half hours of active display. Taking advantage of energy savings and with more conservative use it will not be difficult to exceed almost always 6 hours.

As we have already said previously, wireless charging is absent, while we find the quick charging a 65W which will take approx 40 minutes to bring the smartphone from 0 to 100%.

Conclusions

As usual, before drawing conclusions it is good to talk about price, why this OnePlus 9R is currently available in flash sale su Tradingshenzhen a 437 € for the variant 8/256 GB, 467 € for the 12 / 256 GB e (without flash salt) 417 € for the 8 / 128 GB.

OnePlus 9R

Taking into account the street prices of OnePlus 9 we can observe how the 9R almost cost 100 euro less on each variant, wanting to compare it with OnePlus 8T this is a few euros less.

I personally believe that OnePlus 9R is a middle ground between the old 8T and the new 9, as from the first it inherits some technical characteristics (also shared with the 9), while from the second the design and the build quality improved.

In short, in these days of testing I found myself very well and despite not having a Snapdragon 888, I would like to call it a flagship killer, as at a relatively low price you have all the quality of OnePlus and everything you need for a top-of-the-range user experience.
