Compared to its predecessors, the Redmi AirDots 3 represent a great step forward made by Xiaomi, as we find an improved design and construction, but above all some features that want to elevate them to mid-range earphones and no longer ultra low-cost.
The new model, in fact, in the price list costs almost double compared to the former Redmi AirDots, but despite everything they remain within everyone's reach. In short, let's cut the bull's head and ask ourselves the question that matters: will it be worth the upgrade? Let's find out together in our full review!
Redmi AirDots 3 review
Unboxing - Redmi AirDots 3
That Xiaomi has decided to give a premium look to the new ones Redmi AirDots 3 you can already understand this from the most aesthetically pleasing packaging. Inside, however, we find the classic equipment:
- Redmi AirDots 3;
- USB cable - USB Type-C;
- 2 pairs of replacement pads of different sizes;
- manuals in Chinese language.
Design and construction
Compared to the past we find practically unchanged forms, but both the box and the Redmi AirDots 3 they are larger as they integrate batteries with greater capacity. Despite that, this time Xiaomi he decided to give it a cut more elegance thanks to pastel colors (white, pink and navy) and to a glossy plastic surface on the earphones, which have an area sensitive to touch.
L'ceramic effect I must say that it is definitely classy for the product that hovers around the 30 € and, moreover, one of the main innovations is also represented by the presence of proximity sensors. This means that once the headphones are removed from the ear, music playback will automatically pause.
Probably for many it may seem like a foregone conclusion, but the Chinese brand had initially launched this product as a very low-cost wireless earphone, for which many features had been sacrificed to contain the price, although their audio quality was worth much more than their price. initial.
Despite the slight increase in size, the Redmi AirDots 3 remain light and poco invasive (4.6 grams each), although I found some instability once worn. In fact, many times they tend to slip after a few minutes of use or running.
I point out, however, that this is a factor that changes from person to person based on the ear. In any case, rubber pads of different sizes are provided in the package that will help you keep them firmer.
The earphones can be managed through the touch commands, which, however, are not particularly reactive, unless you give two good shots (and you will still have to wait about 1 second for the response). These include:
- Double tap on one of the two earpieces: answer / close a call
- Double tap on right earpiece: Play / Pause
- Double tap on left earphone: activate the voice assistant.
If you want to change the command management you can do it through the app XiaoAI which we will talk about later. For the moment, you should know that you can decide whether to replace one of these only with the commands "previous / next".
Moving on to the case, inside we find a battery from 600 mAh, practically doubled compared to 300 mAh of the first AirDots. Despite this, however, we are faced with a pocket-sized and practical box that can also be inserted in trouser pockets.
The main changes in this case are three: the presence of a button for pairing and resetting Redmi AirDots 3, the immediate connection to the smartphone as soon as the lid is opened and the USB Type-C input for charging.
Connectivity and calls
Speaking of connectivity, these Redmi AirDots 3 possess the latest standard Bluetooth 5.2 and chipset Qualcomm 3040 with support HD aptX Adaptive, as well as a proximity sensor and a series of features that integrate with the software.
To make the first connection between the AirDots 3 and the smartphone you just need to open the case and press the internal button for a few seconds. In the future, you just need to open the case and they will automatically pair with your device.
Also, should you have one Xiaomi or a smartphone with the MIUI (not all models are supported), you will be shown aanimation with the battery status of the case and headphones, a bit like with the AirPods.
In everyday use, however, connectivity has proved to be a reliable sector, as you can get away from it 12 / 15 meters without the signal being interrupted and, in general, I have never encountered any uncertainties or delays.
About the latter let's talk about latency, because when playing videos or watching movies the Redmi AirDots 3 they show no particular delay between sound and image. However, in the Gaming notice some latency between when you press a button and when you hear the sound, this will not allow you to play “competitive”, but it will be sufficient for standard use, if you don't notice it too much.
Moving on to calls, however, as you well remember the microphones were the real weaknesses of the Redmi AirDots e AirDots S. Will the situation have improved? In reality there hasn't been a big upgrade, as the call quality has improved by a few percentage points, but they always remain the same critical issues.
Indeed, in places poco noisy the audio will not be particularly clear, but you will be able to have a good or bad conversation, while in urban contexts the situation becomes critical and background noises will not be isolated properly. You can take a look at the video on YouTube to better understand what I'm talking about.
Audio and software quality
Compared to previous generations, the audio of the Redmi AirDots 3 It results to be more full-bodied e clean, in which the frequencies are even better balanced for an excellent listening experience for their price range. On the other hand, the audio quality has always been one of the strengths of this model and also with the AirDots 3 Xiaomi has exceeded expectations.
As for the isolation, we do not find an active noise reduction, but thanks to the in-ear solution and the quite high volume it will be possible to listen to music without hearing the surrounding noises.
Moving on to the software, through the application XiaoAI we can go to change some features of the Redmi AirDots 3. Unfortunately, however, we still find the same problem, i.e. the app is currently only in Chinese, but installing it will be very easy, as you simply have to scan the QR Code on the back of the box, visit the site indicated andAPK will be downloaded automatically.
At this point for pairing and configuration I leave you the video I made some time ago for the Xiaomi Mi Air 2S in which I explain all the steps to be taken.
Thanks to this software you can modify gestures of each headset between:
- Play / Pause
- Voice assistant
- Previous song
- Next song
In addition, we will be able to check and install updates, disable music interruption by removing the headphones, read the instructions, check the charging status of the headphones and case, set predefined smart scenes or reminders.
I want to clarify that by installing the application XiaoAI, the voice assistant associated with the gestures will be XiaoAI in Chinese. Without application it will automatically connect to the Google assistant. So I advise you to uninstall the app once you have adjusted the settings of the earphones.
As I have already said in the past, Xiaomi's software is really very complete and of a high level and it is a real shame that the company has not yet made a Global variant.
Le Redmi AirDots 3 they have a battery from 43 mAh for each earphone and a 600 mAh for the charging case. Compared to previous generations, we have seen an increase in capacity on both sides and this translates into even better autonomy.
In fact, with maximum volume I managed to get about 6 hours of continuous music playback, which can extend further with medium / low volume. Also, since the box set can guarantee us approx 6 refills, general autonomy is around 36 hours.
Inside the case the earphones take 1 hour and a half to go from 0 to 100%, while the case needs 3 hours via USB Type-C.
Conclusions - Redmi AirDots 3
Le Redmi AirDots 3 they are a new product with many improvements, but which partly preserves the old design and the old problems (the calls).
This time we are faced with a more elegant product, despite the low price range, improved audio, infinite autonomy and the support of the excellent XiaoAI software which, however, is only Chinese. However, the other side of the coin is represented by microphones not yet up to par and a touch surface that is not very responsive.
But how much do the new ones cost Redmi AirDots 3? Compared to the past the launch price has increased, in fact, in China it went from 99 yuan (12 € approximately) to 199 yuan (25 € about). With us in Europe you can buy them on Banggood thanks to our exclusive coupons that we share daily on GizDeals about 32 € with the code "BG8UR9KL".
In principle we are talking about a figure consistent with what the product is able to offer, indeed, from the point of view of audio quality and some features, these are worth even more than what they cost. But is it really worth the upgrade?
Personally I was quite satisfied with the product itself, but not with the fact that they have not improved aspects such as the calls, which are fundamental for me, and the gaming latency. I know that for the latter you cannot expect much given the price of the earphones, but with the Redmi AirDots S we had reached good levels.
