ASUS ZenFone 8 and 8 Pro: here's what we know about the new flagships
Design and display
At the time of writing it is not possible to know for sure if the new ones ASUS ZenFone 8 e 8 Pro they will keep the design of their predecessors - therefore with a rotating camera - or they will move on more traditional tracks. However, the new teaser published by the company (see it above) seems to have very clear ideas on the style of the devices. The device shown - you can also find the image on the cover - seems to have a large display with a punch hole in the upper left corner for the selfie camera. Of course there is also the possibility that this is the Mini model and that the Flip Camera will remain for the big brothers.
The two smartphones have been identified with the initials ZS672KS / I004D e ZS675KW / I007D and with codenames PICASSO e VODKA, respectively for the base model and the big brother Pro. Just like in the case of the Mini, the various details come from the code of the ASUS PixelMaster Camera app, so they could prove to be very reliable.
Speaking of displays, the PICASSO model comes with a panel OLED da 6.67 " Samsung AMS667UU07, with resolution Full HD + (2499 x 1080 pixels). Apparently the front will not be much different than to the previous generation, characterized by a similar display. The refresh rate is not specified but given that ZenFone 7 has reached 90 Hz it is legitimate to imagine a similar or increased frequency, as in the case of the Mini (120 Hz). The 7 and 7 Pro models are equipped with the same display, so we could hypothesize a similar choice also in this round.
In terms of structure, there is a detail that suggests the abandonment of the flip camera even more: a new official teaser confirms that the ASUS ZenFone 8 series is equipped with IP68 certification against dust and liquids. In short, on this tour we will find ourselves struggling with top of the range with water resistance up to 1.5 meters, for a maximum of 30 minutes. A real novelty for the Asian brand since no previous top of the range was equipped with this certification (now loudly requested by users).
Hardware & Benchmark
Talking about chipsets is very obvious: obviously both ASUS ZenFone 8 and the 8 Pro model will have the Snapdragon 888, Qualcomm's latest top solution, built at 5nm, with a Kryo 680 octa-core CPU (1 x 2,84 GHz + 3 x 2,42 GHz + 4 x 1,8 GHz), a GPU Adreno 660 and a modem 5G. Impossible not to expect at least 8 GB of RAM L e 128 / 256 GB of storage UFS 3.1. For the battery the current models offer a unit of 5.000 mAh with recharge from 30W, but for now there are no rumors on this side.
Recently one of the two top of the range was spotted on Geekbench with the very first benchmarks (and the acronym I004D, which we already know). The Lahaina motherboard confirms that it is a device powered by the Snapdragon 888; the rest of the details concern the presence of 8 GB of RAM and Android 11 for the software part.
The Asian company has confirmed a welcome return for users: the mini-jack input from 3.5 mm found no space on ZenFone 7 (while it was present with SAMSUNG 6) but will now return on the occasion of the new generation. The confirmation came through a short video teaser published by the company, which once again also shows the display with punch hole.
For the sake of accuracy, we report that last year ASUS could not insert the mini jack due to the configuration of the Snapdragon 865, equipped with a 5G modem (X55) not integrated into the SoC. But now this space problem it was solved with the Snapdragon 888 and then the Taiwanese house was able to reintroduce the feature.
The new models of the top range of ASUS should present a nice addition, going from a triple camera to a Quad Camera. However, it would be a configuration not unlike what we saw with the 7 series: we will therefore have a main sensor to be 64 MP Sony IMX686 accompanied by a wide angle (+ macro) from 12 MP Sony IMX363 and one telephoto OV08A from 8 MP (with at least 3X optical and 12X digital zoom). The fourth sensor is a 24 MP OV1B24Q module: the ASUS software code that "inspired" this leak refers to a sensor front.
It remains to be seen therefore whether this wording represents a clue to the absence of the flip camera (and therefore for a distortion of the design of the series) or a simple indicative string.
