Fiido L3 review: INFINITE autonomy and compact size

If up to poco more than a year ago, someone had asked most of what or who Fiido was, probably the first answer would have been instinctively to hypothesize a dog. But things have now changed, and even a lot, and the Chinese company producing pedal assisted electric bicycles has entered the common imagination as one of the best brands in the category.

A well-deserved success, not only thanks to products such as the excellent electric fat bike Fiido M1 Pro (and her younger sister Fiido M1), but also the futuristic Fiido D11, and the most traditional Fiido D4s. In short, it is clear that the meat company to cook has a lot of it, and with its brand new Fiido L3 it is as if it were returning a little to its origins and traditionality: the new Chinese electric bike, with its 14 "wheels and the foldable and extremely compact design is clearly a city model, which has been 'bodied' by a 350w motor, and one 48v and 23.2 Ah battery able to guarantee a maximum autonomy of well 130 Km.

Fiido L3 review: pure POWER designed for the city

Package Contents

The packaging of the new one Fiido L3 it follows the style of all the other electric bikes produced by the company, and is composed of a spatula without too many frills and very compact dimensions, inside which there is the pedal assisted bicycle that is delivered practically already assembled. The only thing to do is to fix the saddle, but it is such a simple operation that even a totally inexperienced person in the sector could do it.

Design and materials

The design of the Fiido L3 it is the typical one of an electric pedal assisted bike for the city. The shapes, designs and structure are very traditional, and even the 14 ”wheels give the newcomer to Fiido a very specific purpose: to be able to transport, even for long distances, through the city streets. The style is totally different from what has characterized the Chinese company in the last year, and the large battery pack is in plain sight and is positioned between the saddle and the rear wheel. The choice of this design, much less "aggressive" than what - for example - we have seen in the Fiido D4s, it is essentially due to a very specific purpose: to guarantee the greatest possible compactness.

And in a certain sense it succeeds: when folded, the Fiido L3 it is very small and is able to enter even less capacious car trunks without any problem. However, there is a problem, and it is related to the weight, because from such a compact model one would expect at least 5/6 kg less: in reality the Fiido L3 it has a gross weight (ie including battery pack and seat) of 26 kg, which makes it rather uncomfortable to load in the car, but also to transport (when closed). Fortunately, however, there is a carrying handle (positioned in the exact center of gravity of the bike) and an aluminum structure in the lower area, on which the folding bicycle can be placed if it has been closed.

Excellent cable management, which are practically invisible along the entire frame of the bicycle, very solid (and typical of the company) all the closing systems of the frame and handlebar. The pedals can also be folded, in order to reduce the overall dimensions of the bicycle to a minimum.

Charging takes place by connecting the charger (with Italian socket) directly to the rear battery pack, on which there is also the input for one ignition key: without using it, the system will not turn on. All the management of the driving modes is entrusted to a small backlit LCD on-board computer, next to which there are the buttons for turning on the headlight and for the horn, together with a accelerator which has been "hidden" in the right handlebar area.

And basically, that's it. There Fiido L3 it does not integrate any gearboxes, nor is it equipped with shock absorbers, and if the rather powerful battery may not always make you feel the lack of a gear system, the lack of shock absorbers added to the very small wheels, could make it rather unpleasant to ride the bike on road surfaces poco uniforms, or for example on the pavé.

Fortunately, the large seat, with generous dimensions and very soft, which tends to reduce vibrations and shocks to a minimum, which we cannot say however with regard to the handlebar.

Motor

The engine of the Fiido L3 it's a 350w brushless. And yes, we are 100w beyond the limits imposed by Italian law. There is no doubt that this is an extremely powerful engine, especially considering the category in which this particular Chinese electric bike is going to be inserted. This is perhaps the unique characteristic of the Fiido L3: it is among the most powerful folding and compact electric bicycles on the market. But, as usual, it is also “outlawed”, because both the power of the engine and the presence of an accelerator that allows it to be used in “full-electric” mode, are not in accordance with the laws in force in Italy.

In any case, the concept of the accelerator is identical to that of an electric scooter, just rotate it to get up to the maximum speed of 25 km / h. Speed which, in reality, is limited to 25 Km / h due to the regulations of the European Union, but which in reality could go far beyond (and yes, it is possible to “unblock” this limitation with a very simple trick).

And even if it is an "illegal" feature in Italy, never as in the case of Fiido L3 the presence of the accelerator is a godsend. And it is not only because there is no torque sensor and the electric motor begins to assist pedaling only after a few turns of the pedals, but it is especially so because the absence of the gearbox (combined with the weight of the bike) could make uphill starts difficult.

Even in this model there are three pedaling modes and are managed by the on-board computer of the electric bike, in which the current speed and the kilometers covered in the current session will also be visible.

And above all third assistance mode, that is the one that allows you to reach 25 Km / h, the power of the engine is felt very very much. The 350w coupled with the 48v and 23.2 Ah battery does not make the Fiido L3 fear even the steepest climbs or the heaviest people: the Fiido L3 it is able to support up to 120 kg of load, without batting an eyelid.

It is also possible to activate the on-board computer cruise control, with which you can proceed in electric mode without having to pedal or use the accelerator. But, clearly, even the use of this feature is totally illegal in Italy.

The road test

I am honest: it will be that the streets of Avellino are practically a war path for the holes present (really, the situation in the Irpinia capital is shameful), it will be that I am now used to the M1 Pro, but personally I have felt the lack of bigger wheels with the Fiido L3. It is clear, however, that this is a very personal factor and that when you want to guarantee compact dimensions, you must first of all give up 20 "wheels and accept the 14" ones.

But beyond this particular, I must admit that I drive the Fiido L3 on more homogeneous road surfaces it is really a pleasure. Of course, the frame and the battery weigh a lot, and it is something that makes itself felt especially in departures not on the flat, but the whole structure of the Chinese electric bike is solid and is able to handle vibrations without any problem, also thanks to a suspension saddle very comfortable, which also performs a function similar to that of a shock absorber.

Good i two disc brakes, although I noticed that they tend to flex slightly when braking with a lot of force, but still manage to guarantee a well balanced and decisive braking as needed.

In short, all in all (if you appreciate the 14 ”wheels) the driving experience with the Fiido L3 it is pleasant in every respect, the positioning and height of the barrel also make it easy to get on and off the saddle, and the small wheels make the electric bike even easier for the city.

Battery and KM autonomy - Fiido L3

The battery of the Fiido L3 is lithium and, according to the company, it should guarantee more than 1000 charge cycles a maximum range of 130 km and attention: this autonomy is calculated in "full-electric" mode, which means that in assisted pedaling the value would increase further.

It is clear, however, that in real life things change a lot, and I am honest: I did not run out of battery in pedal assist mode, because the climate of Avellino did not allow me to ride so much on the bike, but in electric mode I am arrived at drive about 118 Km with a single charge and using all available modes. An exceptional result, which lets me assume that in assisted pedaling it could take a while before having to recharge the bike.

Full charge, from 0 to 100%, happens in about 7 hours via an external power supply that for my tastes has a cable that is definitely too short and inconvenient to use in certain scenarios but, fortunately, the battery is removable: it can then be removed from the frame and recharged with much more convenience.

Price in Italy and conclusions - Fiido L3

The launch price of the Fiido L3 is $ 899,99 (i.e. about 744 euros), but through our coupon you could buy it at a discount at 738,16 €. And it is a rather high figure, this is true, which is however justified by thepractically infinite autonomy of the integrated battery and extremely compact dimensions of the electric bike, both open and closed.

Of course, this is a model that is not for me (or rather, not for Avellino) due to the 14 "wheels, but it is clear that those who need compactness would probably feel uncomfortable using a Fiido M1 Pro. . Fiido's folks continue to take the importance of a torque sensor under their feet, which might make getting used to propulsion at the start a bit longer, and you'll need to remember to downshift and start in mode 1, but all in all it is among the most powerful super compact folding electric bikes in the category, it is complete and it is very pleasant to ride: in short, if you are looking for a compact, powerful pedal assisted bike with the best autonomy, then you will have to insert the Fiido D4s among the models to be evaluated.
