Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite review: at this price is it better than an Amazfit Bip?

It will be to respond to the moves of Huami and Amazfit, or because 2020 is really the year of cheap smartwatches, but one thing is certain: Xiaomi has gone from totally ignoring the wearable market, to being one of its most important protagonists. And the sales success is proving it right, thanks to a product catalog with an excellent quality / price ratio: just think of We Watch e Mi watch color, and the newcomer to India Mi watch revolve, which is perhaps the most interesting among Xiaomi's wearables.

Well, we got to know him under the name of Redmi Watch, and arrived in Italy a few days ago: lo Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite is yet another wearable device of the Chinese brand which, as is now tradition, is sold at a decidedly cheap price, and which even debuted on Amazon at a discount (link below).

But despite it outwardly it Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite it may seem like a Redmi Watch in all respects, in reality it is two devices quite distinct, each of which was adapted to the market in which it would be sold: the European version, for example, compared to the Asian one loses the microphone (and the digital assistant), and it also loses the NFC. But let's face it, having NFC at least here in Italy would be a completely useless thing given the "closure" of the payment circuits.

Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite review

Package Contents

Unlike other competing products, the size of the box with which it is sold Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite they are really small. Inside those of Xiaomi have decided not to insert anything "superfluous", such as a replacement strap, and have remained on the essential in all respects. In the sales box, therefore, we find:

  • Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite;
  • USB cable with magnetic pins, for charging the product;
  • short instruction manual, also in English.

Design and display

Without going around it too much, outwardly it Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite it is practically identical to the Redmi Watch and features a square dial with a case with sharp cuts on the edges.

And yes, many immediately imagined that it could be a sort of "anticipation" of the design that the next Apple Watch could have, and in fact it is difficult to blame these hypotheses: the non-rounded edges convey that "family feeling" iPhone 12, but it is clear that when a smartwatch has a square case it does not necessarily have to "take a cue" from Apple Watch. Because in the case of the Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite It is not so. And that's not the case in many respects, such as the presence of a single side button, or the huge bezels that surround the screen.

In short, the Mi Watch Lite design it has less square lines than the standard Mi Watch, but it also deviates from the Mi watch color, from the round case. To protect the display (which uses a TFT panel, so no AMOLED) there is a 2.5D glass coating, while the body measures 41 x 35 x 10.9 mm, for a weight of just 35 grams (31 grams without the strap), and is available in Black, Silver and Sand colors. It is so light that you hardly feel it on your wrist.

Lo screen is 1.4 " and even if its nature LCD you go to see clearly, it is always important to remember the decidedly cheap price of this device. In direct light conditions it allows a good display of images, and the brightness can also be managed automatically thanks to a brightness sensor that does its job quite well.

However, the always-on feature is not present, a characteristic of AMOLED panels, but the activation of the screen with the rotation of the wrist is always fast and very reactive. Clearly, however, the points against the technology used by Xiaomi are two: the frames, large, huge, and the backlight effect that is especially noticeable on blacks. In short, considering that with a TFT LCD panel blacks are never black, this "halo" that can be seen under the display highlights the enormous frames that surround it even more. Good though 320 x 320 pixel resolution, which guarantees a pixel per inch density of 323 ppi.

Below, then, there is the heartbeat sensor which is able to analyze biometric data constantly, analysis that in the settings you can decide to activate even every 5 minutes, with an obvious increase in battery consumption.

Technical features

If outwardly the Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite might seem identical to the Redmi Watch, in reality the two smartwatches are quite different under the body. Indeed, while Redmi Watch relies on NFC, microphone and AI assistant (XiaoAI, only available in China), in the case of Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite we lose the NFC and the microphone in favor of the GPS location integrated which also exploits GLONASS.

Always stable and without a wrinkle the connection to the smartphone, which takes place via Bluetooth 5.0, excellent water resistance: as well as the Redmi Watch, so too Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite can be submerged under water up to 5 atmospheres.

Here is the complete technical sheet of the Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite:

The PPG sensor offers heart rate detection pretty reliable, but in the Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite all the other "advanced" functions are missing (and quotes are a must) such as monitoring the oxygen level in the blood. And let's be clear, given the accuracy of these surveys, the lack of this functionality is more a good than a bad thing: especially in a period like the one we are experiencing, it is data that is either detected with the utmost precision, or it is better to avoid detecting. And for clarity no: calls cannot be answered, because no microphone and speaker are integrated.

In short, let's not turn around. Many of you will probably say that it is Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite it is none other than one We Band with a larger display. And in essence it is just like that, and it is not even among the most advanced smart bands: I would say that it is basically a Mi Band, with a smartwatch display. There is the essential and that's what matters, and everything seems to work pretty well, including the compass and the barometer that mark changes in orientation and altitude with good precision.

For the more curious, here are the differences between the Redmi Watch and the Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite:

Software and fitness

The management of the smartwatch takes place through the application Xiaomi Wear, available for both Android and iPhone (in the Lite version). And without going into too much specifics, because by now we know it quite well, Xiaomi Wear consists of three tabs accessible via a bar at the bottom, which allow you to manage the various associated wearable devices, access the data detected by the sensors and your user profile.

It is an application much simpler and more basic compared to those of other competing companies, such as Huami's Zepp, with which deep, light and REM sleep will be monitored and analyzed and a daily report on the quality of sleep will be generated, in order to help the user create healthy habits. Also through the app it is possible to set reminders, change some smartwatch settings and activate the reception of notifications on the wearable. Notifications that, however, continue to be without the ability to respond and that integrate the display of only the simplest emojis.

Anyway, in the smartwatch we move to gesture. With a downward swipe the notification panel will be activated, with an upward swipe a panel will be activated in which some toggles for quick settings have been inserted, while with swipes to the left or right you can access the widgets , which will be customizable via the app on the smartwatch. Through the app you can then choose the dials: they are about 100, all very beautiful aesthetically.

Pressing the only one side button instead you will access the applications menu, which continues to be characterized by the usual graphical interface of Xiaomi's smartwatches: and, let's face it, it is a GUI that you either hate or love. Personally I am not a fan of the solution designed by Xiaomi and I continue to prefer the one designed by Huami, but it is precisely through this interface that you can also access the fitness features.

Sono 11, therefore they are greater than those present in the Redmi Watch, and include:

  • Outdoor running;
  • Tapis Roulant;
  • cycling;
  • bicycles;
  • free activity;
  • walk;
  • hiking;
  • trail run;
  • swimming in the pool;
  • free swimming;
  • cricket.

Rather good GPS performance: the first connection to the satellites may take more than a minute, but once the fix is performed the accuracy is excellent.

Battery life

The battery of the Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite  that promises miracles. And I have to be honest: I've been trying the smartwatch for a few days and haven't had the need to charge it yet. So I don't feel like giving a certain and subjective opinion on battery autonomy but, considering that since I have been using it (i.e. about 3 days) I have consumed only 20% of battery, I am quite convinced that 9 days of autonomy all declared by the company.

The charging process takes place via the interlocking charger contained in the package and, again according to what is declared by Xiaomi, will require approx 2 hours for a full charge from 0% to 100% battery.

Price and considerations

The price of the Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite is 69,99 euros. And it is such an attractive price, that in fact on Amazon the product went immediately out of stock. But don't worry, given the high demand, new stocks arrive daily, so if you are interested in buying it, I recommend that you always keep an eye on the link below.

And yes, it is definitely a figure very economical, but one thing is clear: there is always the rule of "no one gives anything", and even in this case you pay for what you actually have. In a nutshell, it is not wrong to say that it is Xiaomi Mi Watch Lite is a Mi Band with the largest screen, and all in all this is right: it is a device that is aimed precisely at those people who are "satisfied" with the functionality of a smart band (even quite simple to be honest), but who do not want to give up a larger display.
