DJI Osmo Mobile 4 OM4 review: many new features, usual limits (and higher price)

If you think that the new stabilization systems built into smartphones are the best solution for recording vibration-free videos, then you've never used a gimbal. Of course, the combination of optical and electronic stabilizer, which is found in the best top of the range this year, is definitely a step forward, but if accessories such as theOsmo Mobile 4 (Or better, OM4 to shorten) year after year they become more and more sold and improved by the companies that produce them, there will be a reason.

Well, believe you it is the same DJI that, year after year, updates its gimbal for smartphones, adding small innovations that - in time - make it more and more optimized. This year, however, the news are not only hardware, such as the new more powerful engines and a magnetic coupling system, but also concern the management software.

In short, the DJI Osmo Mobile OM4 has become the perfect gimbal? It is difficult to achieve this goal, but there is no doubt that we are talking about the product of a leading company in this sector too.

DJI Osmo Mobile 4 OM4 review: many new features, usual limits

The video above was recorded in full with an Asus Zenfone 7 Pro (therefore a large and heavy device), stabilized with the new DJI Osmo Moile 4 OM4.

Package Contents

This year there is only one version of Osmo Mobile 4, which integrates everything you need to exploit the smartphone stabilizer to its full potential. In addition to the gimbal, in the packaging of the DJI OM4 there is the kit for the magnetic coupling of the smartphone, a transport bag, a USB-C cable and the tripod with which it will be possible to position the stabilizer on flat surfaces.

Design and materials

Design and materials of the DJI OM4 they are very similar to what we have already seen on the previous generation. The stabilizer is very compact, as it was last year, and the real novelty lies in the magnetic arm, made with extreme care and which ensures a decidedly strong coupling and able to support even heavy devices.

The choice to use a magnetic coupling system actually has different advantages that go far beyond making the stabilizer operational faster, but that - for example - makes it no longer necessary to calibrate the weights at each start.

But not all that glitters is gold, because the need to always leave the elastic support fixed to the smartphone, could lead to many difficulties with some devices that have the power button right in the center of the body: with the'Asus Zenfone 7 Pro which I used to record the video above, for example, I had to activate the option to turn on the screen with two taps, just because - to be positioned correctly - OM4's magnetic clip perfectly covered the power button, making it inaccessible.

The gimbal opening and closing system remains unchanged and always effective, as long as you are precise in closing it and following the closing guide. The new engines, however, are very good much more powerful than the previous generation, and which are able to support even the heaviest smartphones ensuring fluidity in movements.

Osmo Mobile 3 vs. OM4

The new engines and the new structure of the DJI Osmo Mobile 4 they introduce several innovations compared to the previous generation also as regards the angles of movement of the arm. Here are the main differences.

DJI Osmo Mobile 3:

  • Horizontal rotation: from -162,5 ° to 170,3 °
  • Roll: 85,1 ° to 252,2 °
  • Inclination: from -104,5 ° to 235,7 °

DJI Osmo Mobile 4 OM4:

  • Horizontal rotation: -161,2 ° to 171,95 °
  • Roll: -136,7 ° to 198 °
  • Tilt: -106,54 ° to 235,5 °

Application - DJI Osmo Mobile 4 OM4

La OM4 is managed by the usual DJI Mimo, the company's app available for both iOS and Android, which introduces new recording methods but which brings with it the same limits as always. Starting with the assumption that no application - generally - manages to outperform the native camera app in video quality, e - Unfortunately - this truth is also found in DJI Mimo, especially in the Android version. In short, fragmentation in these cases is a bad thing, even if those of DJI have always been doing everything possible to reduce the problems.

In the new DJI Mimo several have been introduced new shooting modes, some of which are the natural evolution of those already seen in the past (such as the Acre Track 3.0), while others are new.

If, for example, theActive Track 3.0 has become faster and more precise, the Panorama function has been enhanced by the option Clone Me which will allow you to insert various copies of yourself in photos.

The function Dynamic Zoom instead it should guarantee that dynamic effect of approaching a subject, with the background moving away, a bit like you see in the films but which is actually very difficult to achieve using the OM4 and which, in short, should be improved.

Then there are the usual ones Timelapse, Motionlapse ed Hyperlapse, one the evolution of the other, there is the modality Spin Shot that instead of using preset transitions, it will rotate the stabilizer arm to create a beautiful dynamic effect, and then there are Stories and slowmotion.

Experience of use

As for user experience, there is poco to say about the new DJI OM4, except that it is definitely effective. In short, the stabilization and fluidity of the images are much better than those you could have with the best of smartphone stabilizers, even when you use the camera application of your smartphone and not the Dji Mimo app: in this case, however it is important to disable the electronic stabilization of your device.

The grip on the gimbal is always good and all the necessary controls are integrated which are very easy to reach, except for the zoom, which is perhaps placed in a position rather uncomfortable. The trigger, very comfortable and practically identical to that of previous generations, which is flanked by a digital pad for moving the frame, which is also comfortable and very precise.

Battery life

La The battery of the Dji OM4 is a 2400 mAh, which is able to guarantee an average use of 12 hours with a single charge, in my opinion more than enough for the vast majority of users. It also integrates a USB-C input with which, using a suitable cable, allows you to transform the gimbal into one Powerbank capable of charging the smartphone. In this case, however, it is good to remember that autonomy could be significantly reduced.

Price and considerations - Dji Osmo Mobile 4 OM4

The price of the Dji OM4 is 149 euros, but through the link below you can buy it at a discount. And yes, considering that the Osmo Mobile 3 was sold in a standard version for 109 euros and in the combo version for 129 euros, in fact this is a rather important increase, also because the company will produce and sell only one version this year. of its smartphone stabilizer.

If you then consider the fact that now the Osmo Mobile 3 is about 100 euros, and che - separate magnetic attachment - the experience of use it's very similar between the two models, it might perhaps be smarter to think of buying the previous model than the one just presented.

But don't get me wrong: with the Dji Osmo Mobile 4 there is a lot of quality and the gap with competitors in the same price range is very marked, especially thanks to the excellent application that manages its functionality.
