In a market full of very valid alternatives, how can a company producing robot vacuum cleaners and floor cleaners stand out and be able to convince users to buy one of their products? With the quality of suction and washing, this is certain, but now the hardware features are no longer the only ones that people are starting to take into consideration when choosing the best robot vacuum cleaner for their needs, and they do well: we are now at the end of 2020, and if you want to buy a smart product, you must make sure that it really is.
And these are the features that make the VIOMI V3 different from most robots that wash and vacuum: this time the Xiaomi division dedicated to robot vacuum cleaners has raised the bar, producing a model that is not only characterized by record-breaking characteristics, but which fits perfectly into the Xiaomi ecosystem and which integrates a series of advanced (and decidedly more functional) modes such as the V-shaped washing and excellent management of the virtual floor plan of the house. VIOMI V3 review, Xiaomi's robot vacuum cleaner that challenges Roborock
As well as all Chinese robotic vacuum cleaners and scrubbers, the packaging of the VIOMI V3 Xiaomi is full of accessories and integrates everything that may be necessary to ensure efficient and, above all, long-lasting cleaning of the house. In the box with which the product will be delivered there are, in addition to the robot, three tanks (one for suction only, one for washing only and one combined), three cloths for cleaning the floor (one traditional, one for washing and drying and one antibacterial), a plastic support to which they can be connected using a velcro, a multipurpose comb for cleaning the brushes, and clearly the charging base with Italian plug and complete manuals.
Design and construction materials
Available in the only glossy black color, with a turret in which the laser detector is inserted characterized by a brushed aluminum finish, already from the materials with which the VIOMI V3 we understand that it is one of the best robot vacuum cleaners and floor cleaners on the market. The structure is made of plastic, very solid, and the upper part is coated with a glossy black layer which, on the one hand, gives the device a very elegant look, on the other it tends to get dirty perhaps more than usual.
The materials are able to withstand the impacts that could stress the robot during cleaning without any problems, and its 9 cm thickness make it able to clean those areas where products such as 360 S9 (another great robot vacuum cleaner, much more often) may have difficulty. Excellent wheels, decidedly bodied, which pushed by powerful motors will allow the VIOMI V3 to always overcome obstacles and also to climb small steps, as long as they are no higher than about 2 centimeters.
The containers are inserted into the top openable, in which we also find a power button, together with the one for returning home and resetting the device with which you will also have to connect to the home WiFi network (using the Xiaomi Home application).
The only one sore point of VIOMI V3, in terms of materials, it concerns the charging base: Xiaomi's engineers have well thought of producing a very compact and light charging base, which, however, I definitely found unstable on the floor. In a nutshell, during the cleaning phases the base could even be moved by the vacuum cleaner in operation, which would make the "return home" operation much more complicated: to solve the problem, I had to fix it to the floor with adhesive tape, to prevent it from moving inadvertently.
Application: Xiaomi Home has an edge
The complete management of the VIOMI V3 takes place via the application Xiaomi Home, that is the app with which the Chinese company has decided to centralize all the devices of its ecosystem. And we must admit it, although initially I was not a fan of it, over time Xiaomi Home has improved a lot, to the point of being able to give an edge to the devices it can manage: and with the VIOMI V3 there is no exception.
After connecting to the wireless network and the first mapping of the house, which I recommend to do by eliminating all the obstacles that the robot vacuum cleaner might find in its path, the control of the different washing and suction modes, all the integrated functions in the robot vacuum cleaner they can be modified and managed with extreme simplicity (alas, it's still all in English).
The management of maps and rooms, which are created completely independently, is decidedly intuitive, and will allow you to rename each of the rooms in your home (in order to make the zone cleaning) and add up to 5 maps for cleaning multi-storey houses. Programming can store up to 7 programs, which can be different from each other according to the cleaning methods, the areas to be cleaned and - clearly - at the time, and it is possible to decide to proceed with the traditional S-shaped cleaning and washing method, or through a Y movement that emulates the rubbing action of manual floor washing: it is a surprising mode that, although slower, ensures an exceptional cleaning system. It is also possible to activate the side cleaning and the second pass, but in these cases it must be done manually before the start of each wash.
Il VIOMI V3 it does not integrate sensors for carpets, which makes the management of virtual walls and exclusion zones even more useful: in this way it is possible to prevent the robot from cleaning beyond a certain boundary, or in a particular area of the floor. And yes, the precision with which the vacuum cleaner from Xiaomi follows these directives is centimeter. Good job.
Also via the application, you can also control it state of wear of some of the components of the vacuum cleaner, such as the filter, brushes and so on, and you can choose between six different cleaning and washing modes: the suction power can be set on three levels, as well as the amount of water sprayed on the floor.
Operation and cleaning quality - Xiaomi VIOMI V3
Remember the incredible power of the excellent 360 S9, capable of guaranteeing suction equal to 2200 Pa? Well, it is surpassed by that of VIOMI V3: Xiaomi's robot vacuum cleaner, is able to guarantee a maximum suction power of well 2600 Pa, which are heard above all by the maximum noise level of 78 dB. Yes, it is noisy.
However, there is little to say about the actual cleaning quality of the VIOMI V3: it is of the highest level, the virtual floor plan of the house is carried out with precision thanks to the Lidar LDS system and the AI dynamic path algorithm optimizes the results.
What I absolutely didn't like is the tank management, to which a single compartment is always dedicated and which therefore, when the combined one is used, could be decidedly undersized for very large environments: in maximum suction mode and with the container for water and dust, the amount of liquid is sufficient to clean a 40 sq m if set to maximum. Which makes things, perhaps, too cumbersome. It would also have been interesting if the vacuum cleaner had been able to spray more water, but in this case the problem of the size of the liquid tank would have become even more evident.
The point is that, with the method conceived by VIOMI, it also becomes uncomfortable fill the liquid tank: in the combined version there is always the risk of wetting the filter or letting water droplets enter the section dedicated to the dust (with obvious, disgusting results) and in general the filling hole is always uncomfortable and not very functional. Ok, it has a retina with which you avoid the entry of foreign bodies to the liquid, but I found the vent system too small, which makes it much more likely that water will leak out during the refill phase.
The battery of VIOMI V3 is a Mah 4900 which, although slightly less capacious than that of some direct competitors, manages to guarantee more than enough autonomy for cleaning medium-large environments. This is clearly a factor that varies according to the mode of use, but in my experience (and using the robot vacuum cleaner always in the most powerful modes) I was able to clean with a single charge about 100 meters squares, before having to reload. It's not the best, it's true, but let's remember that the motor is 33w and the suction power is 2600 Pa and with the less powerful cleaning mode it is able to clean up to 250 square meters.
Good charging times, but not exciting: to go from 0 to 100% of the battery, they may be necessary between 180 and 240 minutes. But if the battery were to run down during cleaning, the robot would return to the charging base and "feed" only with the energy needed to complete the session.
VIOMI V3 sale price and conclusions
Il price of VIOMI V3 is 407,99 euros on Geekbuying, with shipping from Italy and therefore with fast delivery and zero customs fees. Thanks to our coupon, however (which you find below) you can take home the Xiaomi robot vacuum cleaner and floor cleaner for 398,60, which would make everything more interesting and raise the bar of value for money.
The most famous companies of floor cleaning robots and vacuum cleaners hardly go below 500 euros, and in general to buy a product that can compete with the performance of the VIOMI V3 the figure rises even more: it is certainly not perfect, but it is one of the best robot vacuum cleaners and floor cleaners I have ever had the opportunity to try.
