After analyzing the formidable Huawei P40 Pro, in today's review we will tell you about the younger brother, that is Huawei P40, which is one of the few smartphones on the market to guarantee a large display, but with rather compact dimensions. How did he behave during our tests? Let's find out together in the article!

Huawei P40 review

Unboxing - Huawei P40

Inside the sales package there is the following equipment:

  • Huawei P40;
  • wall power supply;
  • USB charging cable - USB Type-C;
  • Type-C earphones;
  • pin for the SIM slot;
  • manuals.

Design and construction

Huawei P40 it doesn't change much in the design compared to P40 Pro, the only differences are in the presence of a flat display instead of curved and in the absence of the periscopic lens in the posterior.

For the rest we still find one magnificent back cover in opaque glass, in our case in the coloring Silver Frost, which thanks to its beveled sides guarantees excellent grip and a fabulous feel.

Huawei P40

I am serious when I say that every now and then I stopped to look at the smartphone because I really like it and this has not happened to me since OPPO Reno.

The good thing is that not too many fingerprints are retained, but in any case, the few are taken away by a simple wipe on a shirt.

In any case the construction always remains excellent, very resistant and with every part in its place, without a minimum of uncertainty. Unfortunately, unlike our older brother, we don't have a certification IP68, But a IP53, which will still allow us to protect it from splashes.

Huawei P40

Le dimensions they are more compact than Huawei P40 Pro, let's talk about 148.9 x 71.06 x 8.5 millimeters for a weight of 175 grams, which make it definitely manageable and easy to use with one hand. For many it may be risky to call it compact but to date, iPhone 11 Pro aside, it remains one of the smallest top of the range on the market.

The only aspect that made my nose turn up is the photographic module, which I also like aesthetically, but it has a boss too pronounced. Surely the lenses used on the smartphone require some space, but it is really inconvenient to use the P40 if placed on a table.

Below is positioned the USB Type-C input with dual SIM slot, the main microphone and the system speaker, while on the opposite front we find only the secondary microphone. On the right side the solid aluminum frame is accompanied by the power button and the volume rocker, unlike the left side which is completely empty.

We conclude with the front profile on which we do not find the ear capsule, which has been replaced by an audio transmission technology under the display (Acoustic Display Technology). Then there is a double front notch located at the top left that integrates the sensor for the Air Gesture, the selfie camera as well as the IR emitter for face recognition.

Huawei P40 has a display OLED da 6.1 inches in Full HD + (2340 x 1080 pixels) and with density of PPI 431.

Here too we start by making comparisons with the older brother, because we have no gods curved edges, nor a refresh rate a 90 Hz, but only a standard a 60 Hz.

As for the flat panel personally there is no problem, since this is less fragile, however I would have expected something more on the refresh rate since today the competition è ruthless and that even on lower price ranges we have i 90 Hz.

Despite this we speak of a unit with one very high quality thanks to a high chromatic fidelity, excellent viewing angles and adequate minimum / maximum brightness levels that will facilitate reading in difficult conditions. The responsiveness of the automatic brightness sensor is also very good.

There is no lack of various settings for color calibration, if you are not satisfied with the yield, the dark mode, the eye protection mode to limit the emission of blue light, the always-on display and the automatic management of the screen resolution , so as to preserve autonomy.

Personally, the elongated hole on the left doesn't bother me, but you can always hide it. However, it should be noted that the space reserved for notifications is further restricted than Huawei P40 Pro, as we have more compact dimensions.

Hardware and Performance

Under the body of the Huawei P40 we find the same chipset as the P40 Pro and of Mate Xs 5G, or the solution produced in-house HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G including an octa-core processor with a maximum clock frequency of 2.86 GHz, a GPU Mali-G76 MC16, 8 GB di RAM LPDDR4X e 128 GB di UFS storage 3.0 expandable via NM Card up to 256 GB.

Needless to say, the smartphone is a real one splinter and the user experience is fluid and free of bugs or various obstacles. You will not have any kind of problem in any situation, whether you use it only for social networks or for work with heavier apps.

We can say the same for the Gaming, in fact, even the heaviest titles are played at maximum details for a true top of the range experience. I have tested with several games like PUBG, Asphalt 9 e Brawl Stars and everything went smoothly like oil.

Il flagship of the top of the range Huawei it's definitely the photo gallery and despite this Huawei P40 there are some differences, however we have excellent sensors with Leica lenses from 50 + 16 + 8 MP with opening f/1.9-2.2-2.4 with OIS, 17mm wide angle, 3x optical zoom, autofocus and LED flash.

Needless to say, on the whole the older brother performs better, but even here in the daytime we have some great shots presenting a high level of detail it's a very good lighting management and colors.

in macro there is an excellent bokeh and we can really go very close to the subject to be photographed, while the portrait mode manages to perfectly cut people in the foreground.

La wide-angle camera returns shots from true top of the range thanks to adequate lighting management, a good level of definition and without particularly distorting the sides.

As regards instead zoom 3x the shots obtained are good and we have a good gap between the objects in focus and the background. In short, we will not have the same sensor seen on board the P40 Pro, but this too is doing quite well.

Di notte the famous enters the scene Night mode di Huawei that has always surprised us and, in fact, with a good steady hand or with a tripod the results are surprising if we consider that we are talking about a smartphone and not a professional machine.

Without the latter, the shots are still very good for its price range, but in some cases there is a bit too high sharpness that causes a slight grain. For the rest, excellent work also with the wide angle and with the 3x zoom as long as the scene is not very dark.

From the front we have a sensor from 32 mega-pixels with opening f / 2.2 flanked by a depth sensor that guarantees level selfie thanks to the good artificial bokeh. In favorable lighting conditions you will be surprised by its quality, but even at night they defend well thanks to a good detail (as long as you are illuminated a minimum) and a good management of the lights.

Overall, by spending less you will be able to bring home a great one the camera-phoneobviously if you want il best of the best on the market then you will have to aim for Huawei P40 Pro, but already so you will be able to make a great impression on social media and beyond.

I video they can be registered up to a maximum resolution of 4K is 60 fps both with the rear and front cameras and we can enjoy excellent stabilization and focus.

Audio and connectivity

L'audio output from the single speaker of the Huawei P40 it has a high volume, clean and with a good balance of frequencies. As previously mentioned, we don't have the ear capsule, but a technology called has been developed Acoustic Display Technology which transmits the audio through the display.

In the call you won't even notice the difference, the only problem is that at maximum volume who is next to you could hear the conversation. However, this often also happens with smartphones with the classic ear capsule.

As for connectivity, su Huawei P40 we find full support to 5G, both NSA and SA, in addition to the possibility of exploiting one e-SIM simultaneously with a physical SIM. Overall therefore we have one dual SIM slot + virtual SIM. (we can't go 5G with both).

Come da tradizione Huawei the reception is at the top, although I was able to test it only in the surroundings of my home due to the quarantine.

For the rest we have a very complete sector thanks to the support of Wi-Fi 6+, allNFC, to Bluetooth 5.0, to geolocation systems GPS Compass, Galileo, GLONASS e QZSS and support for desktop mode through theUSB Type-C 3.1.

Finally, let's talk about release systems because we have the fingerprint sensor under the very fast display e accurate, successfully unlocks 10 out of 10 without problems, but I must admit that I used it very little, as I was unable to lift the smartphone that facial recognition unlocked it.

Indeed, on the P series di Huawei we have an infrared system that turns out to be a lot Quick e fast in all light conditions, although it is less safe than the Mate series with the unlock 3D.

Aboard Huawei P40 are Android 10 with personalized interface EMUI 10.1 with security patch of March 1 2020.

This UI we already know it very well and we know how many customizations e functionality allows us to exploit. Among the most useful we mention the sidebar accessible through extended swipe on one of the two sides, which will allow us to divide the screen with 2 apps or the picture-in-picture, functions that we have already seen also on board the P40 Pro or the Mate Xs 5G.

For the rest we find the themes, the dark mode, the digital management, the phone clone, the various energy saving modes and much more, including the desktop mode means USB Type-C 3.1 or wireless mode with reduced performance.

In short, there are really many goodies and with the latest version the EMUI has been enriched with features that make it much more competitive than other interfaces.

However, as you well know, from Huawei Mate 30 Pro, the Chinese company had to give up Google services in favor of Huawei Mobile Services con l 'AppGallery instead of Play Store.

AppGallery, TrovApp, Phone Clone and Google Play Store

The proprietary solution of Huawei it is certainly the needle of the balance in the purchase choice of this device since it currently includes multiple applications used in everyday life but, unfortunately, it does not allow 100% coverage of the applications that can be downloaded from Google Play Store. The Play Store at the moment it is however installable through a fairly complex procedure which however could be blocked later.

In relief of these gaps we find an application of Huawei called TrovApp which allows, if AppGallery does not include the application you are looking for, to download it directly from the manufacturers' websites or through the APKPure. In fact, just search for the name of the application to view the options available for download or the alternatives that can "replace" the app you are looking for.

The combination of TrovApp e AppGallery allows you not to have to give up completely on your habits but it takes some time to settle in the use of alternative apps.

You can also take advantage of it Phone Clone, the application of Huawei the transfer of data from the previous device to the new one, which allows you to recover the phone numbers of the address book (which if they were saved on the Google account otherwise they would not be available), all compatible applications, the photo gallery and the rest of the data.

Also multiple applications like Netflix o Disney + do not benefit from the certifications for the DRM WideVine and therefore do not allow the reproduction of content in HD or higher quality. Unfortunately, this obstacle cannot be circumvented at the moment.

Finally, we point out that some banking applications like Hype do not allow login or payment through NFC and others are limited in part because the functionality requires the presence of GMS.

Such a situation on a top of the range from 799€ it is decidedly delicate and although we are talking about one of the best compact devices of this first half of 2020 it is obvious that having to give up certain applications, which perhaps cannot be replaced at the moment, is a difficult choice to face.

The situation will certainly improve in the coming months as the effort of Huawei in expanding the availability of applications on its store is truly remarkable but today it requires a little practicality and sacrifice in order to respond to user needs.

Battery - Huawei P40

Under the body of the Huawei P40 we find a battery from 3800 mAh with quick charging support SuperCharge da 22.5W.

With stressful use only in Wi-Fi I managed to get to an average of about 5 hours of active screen, while with data network and active hotspot I have totaled an average of approx 3 hours and minutes 30.

In any case, you arrive in the evening without any particular problems, but perhaps I would have expected a little more.

Finally, with the supplied power supply we can get there from 0 to 100% in about 1 30 hours and minutes, also in this case it is not the fastest in circulation. There is no wireless charging, too bad, a lack that weighs if you look in the home of competitors.

Conclusions and price - Huawei P40

Since we arrived at conclusions it is good to also talk about price because Huawei P40 is available on the official store a 799 € with a silicone cover as a gift. The price is certainly important, but always in line with the main competitors.

Personally I consider it a great smartphone for those who want a compact device, but at the same time I would wait for the price to drop even more because today it definitely guarantees a cutting-edge connectivity sector and a very good camera, but always presents the obstacle of the absence of Google services, as well as some small burrs.

Obviously everything also depends on your needs, because if your use revolves around the ecosystem of Google then this P40 it is not for you, but if your routine does not use it and you are looking for a solution with small dimensions then it could satisfy all your needs.
