Il Huawei P40 Pro represents for Huawei the test case for this 2020 as it will allow the company to determine future choices, especially in the software sector given the absence of Google.
We had the opportunity to test the device thoroughly by comparing it with its predecessor, the Huawei P30 Pro. In this review we report our impressions and ratings on this interesting smartphone.
Huawei P40 Pro: camera, display, battery and much more in our review
Packaging and Accessories
The sales package of the Huawei P40 Pro it is quite rich in accessories and includes:
- Wall power supply with maximum output at 40W and 4A;
- protective silicone cover;
- USB Type-C headphones;
- USB Type-C to Type-A cable;
- pin for the SIM slot.
Design and materials
Il P40 Pro greatly improves the design of the Huawei P30 Pro introducing a curved front panel on all sides and a beveled back-cover that gives excellent grip.
The device is built in rule of art and gives a feeling of solidity and sophistication difficult to find in other devices. A praise a Huawei for the excellent care with which he created and designed this terminal. The downside in this regard could be found in the possible fragility of the solution adopted for the display of four curved sides which, in the event of a fall, could present more problems than expected.
Let's talk about a device that measures 158.2 x 72.6 x 8.9 mm for a total weight of 203 grams. The rear photographic module protrudes by almost two millimeters but is enriched by a pleasant glass finish. The device is certified IP68 against water and dust.
From an aesthetic point of view, the most important novelty is the presence of a double front notch located at the top left which integrates the sensor for the Air Gesture, the selfie camera as well as the IR emitter for face recognition.
The dimensions are important and compared to the notch of the previous model rather discreet to the eye, the implementation on the P40 Pro immediately catches the eye.
Compared to what was seen on P30 Pro in our view, this solution represents a step back in terms of design as the notch is very evident (although it is possible to hide it via software) although it is a compromise to be accepted to integrate the 2D facial release and Air Gesture.
The display is a unit from 6.58 inches OLED with resolution 2640 1200 pixels x and with a density of 472 ppi.
The biggest innovation is certainly the implementation of a refresh rate up to 90 Hz automatically managed by the system in the execution of compatible applications. This innovation helps to make the user experience really pleasant with a feeling of fludity at the top but also leads to a decrease in autonomy. You can still use the classic refresh rate a 60 Hz selecting the appropriate option in the settings thus helping to improve the overall autonomy.
The quality of the panel is very high as is the fairly faithful color range. Excellent viewing angles. You can adjust the color temperature through the settings. There is no lack of support for reading mode, which allows you to limit the emission of blue light so as not to strain your eyes when reading or in the evening, or the possibility of lowering the display resolution otherwise automatically managed by the system in an "intelligent" way ".
Hardware and performance
Il P40 Pro runs really well in all operations thanks to the processor octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G with two cores at 2.86 GHz Cortex-A76, 2 cores at 2.36 GHz Cortex-A76 e four cores 1.95 GHz Cortex-A53. The GPU is the Mali-G76 MC16 which returns a smooth gaming experience in each session. We have not experienced any overheating in long game sessions with PUBG o COD Mobile.
The device is equipped with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal UFS 3.0 memory Expandable through 256 GB Nano Card.
The performances are excellent and combined with the refresh rate a 90 Hz they give a rewarding experience both in the social sphere and in the use of work tools. Multitasking is managed in optimal way even if we found some problem with notifications which forced us to act manually on the automatic background resource management options to ensure that some messaging apps were not closed as Telegram o Skype.
Il Huawei P40 Pro redefines the limits of mobile photography as done by its predecessor by offering a photographic sector to scream that can be compared without problems to digital cameras and in some cases even more.
The device is equipped with well 4 photo sensors summarized as follows:
- main sensor UltraVision RYYB from 50 mega-pixels 23 mm;
- ultra wide-angle sensor from 40 mega-pixels of 18 mm with aperture f / 1.8;
- periscopic telephoto sensor SuperSensing 12 mega-pixels from 125 mm with f / 3.4 aperture and 5x optical zoom;
- 3D ToF sensor.
The combination of these sensors allows for a 10x hybrid zoom and a maximum 50x digital zoom. Below is a clip of the operation from ours TikTok profile:
@gizchinaThe zoom of the Huawei P40 Pro is spatial! ## HUAWEI ## huaweip40pro ## technology ## tech ##for you ## wow ## Futuretech ## nature ## photomagic
The shooting software uses pixel binning, or the merging of pixels, to create photos at 10 mega-pixels that amaze for the color fidelity and for the details captured. Excellent macros, even if the option is missing Super Macro present on P30 Pro, as well as portraits that have excellent bokeh. Improved the wide angle shots, even at night.
Just the mode Night always represents the wow effect that manages to return the photographic sector of the devices made by Huawei. Simply the device manages to find light where it is not there returning appreciable shots in situations of total darkness and exceptional photos with light sources on the scene. In the video review we have included a short clip that best expresses this judgment.
Huawei today he is definitely the unbeatable leader of night photos that combined with the versatility offered by the entire photographic sector make P40 Pro certainly the best device out there for taking photos.
The front camera from 32 mega-pixels with f / 2.4 aperture and depth sensor is a decisive step forward compared to Huawei P30 Pro. This system finally returns important shots with an excellent artificial bokeh. Even selfies made at night have excellent detail and good lighting thanks to the display that lights up completely white when shooting. In short, Huawei has worked really well to compensate for one of the flaws of its previous top of the range.
Finally, the videos are made at the maximum resolution 4K is 60 fps both with the rear and front photographic module. There is a mode slow-motion up to 7680 fps and timelapse in 4K.
The video quality is really high with a good stabilization and an overall high profile performance thanks to the sensor from 40 mega-pixels CineLens. Excellent stereo sound captured by microphones.
Security and unlocking systems
Il P40 Pro is equipped with a biometric release sensor placed under the display which increases the detection surface of the 30% compared to the predecessor and it is certainly faster and more precise in unlocking. The position has also changed as the sensor itself is located almost in the middle of the display.
The news on P series di Huawei is represented by the aforementioned facial release via infrared emitter which is very quick and fast, even in complete darkness, albeit less secure than the unlock 3D seen on the series Mate. You can check the quick unlock in the dark thanks to the clip in the video review.
Il Huawei P40 Pro is moved by the new EMUI 10.1 based on Android 10 AOSP with security patches currently updated to March 2020. The effort of the Chinese giant to renew its proprietary interface is appreciable as with each new version we find many small improvements that make the user experience more pleasant.
Il P40 Pro, for example, inherits two useful functions from Huawei Mate XS or the sidebar accessible through a long side swipe to access the fast apps and the possibility to open them in floating windows. The latter option can also be activated by multitasking.
The package is completed by the dark mode, the digital time management, the three energy saving modes and the Huawei Search to quickly search for apps or files on the device.
Google Assistant has been replaced by Huawei Assistant, accessible via swipe from the left, which allows you to add notes, read the latest news or quickly view the use of the app. On the P40 Pro the company's new voice assistant also officially debuted, Celia, currently available in English, therefore Italian is missing.
Finally, there is the desktop mode via USB Type-C 3.1 or wirelessly with reduced performance.
AppGallery, TrovApp, Phone Clone and Google Play Store
As you well know, Huawei starting from Mate 30 Pro, continuing with the Huawei P40 Lite and now with this P40 Pro, had to give up Google services by enhancing and improving its app store, i.e. AppGallery.
The proprietary solution of Huawei it is certainly the needle of the balance in the purchase choice of this device as it currently includes multiple applications used in everyday life but, unfortunately, it does not allow 100% coverage of the applications that can be downloaded from Google Play Store. The Play Store at the moment it is however installable through a fairly complex procedure which however could be blocked later.
In relief of these gaps we find an application of Huawei called FindApp which allows, if AppGallery does not include the application you are looking for, to download it directly from the manufacturers' websites or through the APKPure. In fact, just search for the name of the application to view the options available for download or the alternatives that can "replace" the app you are looking for.
The combination of FindApp e AppGallery allows you not to have to give up completely on your habits but it takes some time to settle in the use of alternative apps.
You can also take advantage of it Phone Clone, the application of Huawei the transfer of data from the previous device to the new one, which allows you to recover the phone numbers of the address book (which if they were saved on the Google account otherwise they would not be available), all compatible applications, the photo gallery and the rest of the data.
Also multiple applications like Netflix o Disney + do not benefit from the certifications for the DRM Widevine and therefore do not allow the reproduction of content in HD or higher quality. Unfortunately, this obstacle cannot be circumvented at the moment.
Finally, we point out that some banking applications like Hype do not allow login or payment through NFC and others are limited in part because the functionality requires the presence of GMS.
Such a situation on a top of the range from 1049€ it is decidedly delicate and although we are talking about one of the best, if not the best, device of this first half of 2020, it is obvious that having to give up certain applications, which perhaps cannot be replaced at the moment, is a difficult choice to face.
The situation will certainly improve in the coming months as the effort of Huawei in expanding the availability of applications on its store is truly remarkable but today it requires a little practicality and sacrifice in order to respond to user needs.
This device returns the best that the market can offer in the connectivity field, among which the support stands out 5G via the integrated modem and the possibility of using one e-SiM simultaneously with a Physical SIM. Alternatively, two physical nano SIM cards can be used.
There is support for Wi-Fi 6+, allNFC, to Bluetooth 5.0, to geolocation systems GPS, Galileo, GLONASS e QZSS. Finally, there is support for desktop mode through theUSB Type-C 3.1.
Come da tradizione Huawei, the signal is excellent even in places where cell change is frequent. We found no pairing and connectivity issues Bluetooth the device with the Huawei FreeBuds 3 ol 'Amazfit GTS tested during the trial days.
The smartphone offers a good level of audio quality even if mono given the single speaker placed at the bottom which does not place it at the top of the sector but still guarantees a pleasant performance both in listening to multimedia content and in speakerphone.
In call the sound is clear through the transmission technology below the named display Acoustic Display Technology, which we found to be improved compared to the P30 Pro, as well as the voice captured by the microphones which is loud and clear to the interlocutor.
Battery and Autonomy
The battery is a unit from 4200 mAh with quick charging support SuperCharge to 40W which allows you to fully charge the device from 0 to 100% in about an hour using the proprietary power supply. Do not miss the wireless charging up to 27W and reverse wireless charging with which to upload the Huawei FreeBuds 3 or other devices that support this technology.
In our tests the device pleasantly surprised us by returning a first class autonomy with approx 8.30 h of screen on in a single day of use and up to 6 hours in two days of use.
We specify that, given the containment measures currently in force, the tests were carried out at home with a "forced" alternation of Wi-Fi connectivity and data in order to better simulate daily use.
Price and conclusions
Il Huawei P40 Pro is a device made in an excellent way and that returns exceptional feedback at first sight but which unfortunately has to deal with the temporary software gaps caused by the divorce with Google.
The smartphone offers a latest generation display, a high-performance hardware sector, the best camera in mobile e enviable autonomy for many top of the range competitors. The company has invested and will continue to invest heavily to make up for the lack of Google but it is good to underline that for some users choosing this terminal means accepting a compromise that, to date, requires some important renunciation in terms of apps.
The situation will improve rapidly over the next few months and it is not excluded that Huawei e Google can find an agreement to return to the glories of the past. In the meantime, however, should you decide to purchase the Huawei P40 Pro, facing the software difficulties, you can be sure that you will immediately love to love this device which, to date, is in our opinion the best top of the Chinese range on the market from the hardware point of view.
Il Huawei P40 Pro is available for purchase at the price of 1049€ with the Huawei Watch GT2 for those who register the product by May 5:
