In a segment where Hold on, Teclast e jumper they are the masters, finally we see a new competitor ready to put the stick to the wheels to those seen previously. We are talking, in fact, of the Chinese company BMAX who recently launched his BMAX X14, which aesthetically (and not only) recalls the EZbook X3 Pro Jumper. Will he have managed to keep us satisfied? Let's find out in our full review.

BMAX X14 review

Unboxing - BMAX X14

Inside the sales package we find the following equipment:

  • BMAX X14;
  • wall power supply;
  • power supply adapters;
  • instruction manual.

Design and construction

As already said at the opening, the BMAX X14 it is incredibly similar to EZbook X3 Pro Jumper which we reviewed last month. In fact, we are faced with a device made entirely in aluminum and which has frames around the particularly fine display.

The only two differences that you will be able to catch quickly are the presence of the logo (a kind of Transformer) with backlit eyes and one webcam moved to the bottom frame of the panel, rather than the top one.

For the rest, the size of the BMAX X14 are more generous, as we have a diagonal of the display from 14.1 inches. Going into more detail we have 323 x 217 x 15 millimeters for a weight of approx 1.4 kilograms. Despite this, the laptop turns out to be still very much manageable It is perfect for working on the move since it can be easily inserted into all work backpacks (or devoted to productivity).

The notebook turns out to be solid ed free of push-ups, especially in the middle of the keyboard. The only negative part is that some corners could have finished them better in order to show a continuity between the side frame and the lower body. This makes it a little bit sharp and less "smooth" and "harmonious" to the touch.

Despite this I must say that I was satisfied with its appearance as it seems to belong to one higher price range. In fact, apart from Chinese competitors, it is difficult to find a car with these materials while remaining below the 300 euro.

On the right side we find the USB 3.0 port, the 3.5 mm jack input and the microSD slot, while on the opposite side there is the USB Type-C 3.1 port and the input for charging. As with the Jumper, the jack input is also not flush with the body and will be easier to scratch.

La keyboard è backlit and with US layout, but don't be frightened by this last detail, as it is only a matter of habit. Alternatively, you can always purchase stickers in the Italian configuration to be superimposed on the current one so as not to commit writing errors.

However, what it can scare is the fact that the touch on the space bar and this slow your operation a lot, without forgetting that the white font on the gray keys is not the best of the choices, because with the reflections due to the light you will not be able to see anything of what you will pick. There backlight it will help you in this case, especially at night, but in the open air the situation will not change.

Unfortunately, another element that will inevitably slow down your productivity is the touchpad. Despite this being beautiful spacious and full support for Windows gestures, the reception of touches è not very precise. I had also mentioned this flaw on the EZbook X3 Pro Jumper, but here the situation seems to worsen. Despite this we have enough space for the wrists.

Aboard BMAX X14 we have a display from 14.1 inches diagonal with resolution Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) and treatment glossy. Although generally prefer this type of treatment over an opaque one, it must also be said that it causes reflections in the sunlight or in a room with a window behind it.

In all this the maximum brightness it does not help us much because it is certainly sufficient indoors, but to the limit if we are outdoors. Let's say the manufacturer could have done more. As for the colors instead, these are not very saturated, but with sufficient contrast.

In short, we are talking about a panel that after all can be satisfactory for a purely amateur or university use, but that cannot be good for those who want to make us color correction for photos or videos.

Under the body of the BMAX X14 we find a chipset Intel Gemini Lake N4100, which is inclusive of a processor quad-core with a maximum clock frequency of 2.4 GHz and base of 1.1 GHz, flanked by 8 GB di Dual Channel LPDDR4 RAM (not expandable) e 256 GB di SSD SATA3 memory, expandable through lo SSD slot dedicated or through microSD. Software side we find Windows 10 Home in Italian language.

For its price range, the notebook does its job sufficiently for university and basic use, therefore it is intended for use with office suite, web browsing, writing of Articles, YouTube, Spotify, Netflix and so on.

The transition between one software and another is quite rapid even if with too many windows open the machine inevitably slows down.

Le memory turn out to be fast enough and showed results similar to those found on jumper. Finally, we are talking about one fanless machine with passive cooling system, whose temperature hardly exceed i 65 °.

As for the graphic part on board we find one Intel UHD Graphics 600 GPU that will allow us to make light gaming with the titles on the Microsoft Store How Asphalt Urban o Sniper Fury. It will not be possible to start more demanding titles like Fortnite o Apex Legends because the minimum system requirements are not respected.

Speaking instead of photo and video editing, in this case too we can only make one amateur use. For example, we can effectively edit a video with two audio tracks and two videos, but without color correction and too many transitions, as they would slow down the notebook excessively.

Connectivity, audio and camera

As for the connectivity the BMAX X14 presents an entrance USB Type-C 3.1 with video output up to 4K, a door USB 3.0, the microSD slot, Wi-Fi Dual Band (network card Intel Wireless AC 9461, the same view aboard the jumper) which works pretty well even remotely from the router and the Bluetooth 5.0. Let's say that from this point of view I have not encountered any particular problems, indeed, we have a technical data sheet that in some ways envies many more expensive competitors. Despite that, I would have preferred a extra USB input.

The notebook owns four loudspeakers located on the front, which however is not they are quite powerful and do not return particularly full-bodied audio. In fact, the high and medium frequencies at the expense of the low ones. We can safely say that it can be good to see some movies at home, but if you are looking for a quality sound then you will have to put a good speaker or soundbar next to it.

We have no detailed information about the technical specifications of the camera on board BMAX X14, but we can say that it is enough for just some informal video calls. Furthermore, the position on the lower part of the display will force us to tilt it up to the maximum extension, but it will still not be enough to frame our face completely (if it does, it will take us from under the neck). Finally, the audio captured by the microphone will be somewhat metallic.

Under the body of the BMAX X14 we find a battery from 38Wh (10.000 mAh), which allows us to obtain excellent autonomy. In fact, with basic use and average brightness at 40% I managed to get around 9 hours alternating YouTube, Word, Spotify, Netflix it's a light gaming.

Obviously going to make video rendering or long game sessions we will shorten the timing. Full charging, however, takes place in just over two and a half hours.

BMAX X14 review - Conclusions

I had high expectations from this BMAX X14 because I was extremely happy that a new competitor, but after analyzing it thoroughly I can say that it did not leave me particularly satisfied. The touchpad not precise it is almost frustrating in everyday use and a space bar is added to it that works intermittently.

On the other hand, we have sufficient performance for basic use and an attractive design, as well as a very good autonomy.

In short, by adding up we can say that it is the main competitor of the EZbook X3 Pro Jumper because it shares most of the data sheet with it, except the display. Which would I buy between the two? Despite not even the jumper be perfect I would go on this because it manages to be a little more reliable and to guarantee us slightly better performances.
