Review OPPO Reno 2: always beautiful but with something extra!

OPPO Reno 2

For some time now, the manufacturers of smartphone try to propose something new in this area. Especially from the point of view of design the real challenge today is to reduce the side frames as much as possible. Many have adopted the technique of the hole in the display, containing the front camera. Still others have opted for one retractable camera selfie. Of all these, OPPO Reno has succeeded in surprising everyone since its first release on the market. Reason for which with the second edition, that is OPPO Reno 2, many expected a further leap in quality. So this device will be really improved in every respect? How will he have behaved in the various tests? Let's find out together, within ours Full review.

Review OPPO Reno 2

Taking a look at the sales package, let's see how the brand wanted to develop the box vertically. However, the whole unboxing experience does not vary much compared to the more classic one. Inside the elegant packaging, however, find space:

  • OPPO Reno 2;
  • protective plastic film, already installed on the front glass;
  • USB / USB Type-C cable;
  • wall-mounted power supply with European socket;
  • leatherette cover, blue;
  • short instruction manual, also in Italian;
  • pin for the SIM slot;
  • over-ear earphones with cable.

Design & Materials

This smartphone is, undoubtedly, one of the most particular of those on the market. Not so much for the shapes, quite classic, as for the coloring and the play of light offered by back cover. Also in our version, defined Luminous Black, the whole central part, inside of which the company logo is located, is embellished with really captivating colors. It is not easy, unfortunately, to make what can be seen live in the picture. Beyond this aspect, however, the device presents itself with a solid metal structure along all the side edges, with two glass surfaces, both on the front and back.

OPPO Reno 2

This is not one of the most comfortable phones to hold. In fact, we are talking about a product that measures 160 x 74,3 x 9,5 mm, with a total weight of 189 grams. At this point, you may be wondering why it is so thick. Taking a look at the back, however, everything becomes clearer. If we look in detail, the entire photographic sector is perfectly flush with the body, without any step. It is therefore necessary to give credit to OPPO for having thought of such a compact solution, despite the presence of well four different cameras.

OPPO Reno 2

From the side profile, slightly satin, it is possible to see the presence of the On / off button on the right, accompanied by the SIM slot. On the opposite profile, instead, we have the volume balance. In the back, then, reside the audio jack from 3,5 mm, the main microphone, the input USB Type-C and the system speaker. On the upper part, finally, the true peculiarity of this model stands out. In fact, most of this surface is reserved for selfie pop-up room, with the typical shape of the shark fin already shown in the first series. This component could raise some doubts about its resistance, but harassing it for a few moments immediately feels its solidity.

If it is really necessary to make a note to this mechanism it is the fact that this collects a lot of dust over time. Sometimes, therefore, you will have to clean the surface that it contains thoroughly selfie camera e LED flash.

If we take a look at the front panel, we can only note the excellent work done by the company regarding the reduction of the frames. In fact, almost the entire surface is occupied by the display, showing a screen-to-body-ratio of the 93,1%. Beyond this aspect, however, this panel is a unit AMOLED da 6,5 inches diagonal with resolution FHD + (2400 × 1080 pixel) and density of 401 ppi. It is therefore a very bright display, even in outdoor environments.

The whole color range is reproduced quite well, despite the colors are still very lively. If you are not in tune with the initial settings, however, it is always possible to change the calibration of the color within the menu Display and brightness. Beyond this aspect, however, this unit is able to satisfy on any occasion, even when watching a movie or a TV series on Netflix. Thanks to brightness sensor precise and responsive, then, even on the outside it will not be difficult to visualize all the contents.

Having to give an opinion also to the panel touch screenthen I must say that in this case I would have expected a greater fluidity in the writing phase. Not that the device is slow but, almost imperceptibly, it is as if there was a small delay between our touch and the actual action on the display. However, this did not affect my excellent experience with this product.

Hardware & Performance

On OPPO Reno 2 finds space for a hardware that you would not expect after trying it. Here, in fact, resides a Qualcomm SoC Snapdragon 730G, then an octa-core solution with production process at 8nm, Kyro 470 architecture and maximum clock frequency equal to 2,2GHz. This package also comes with a GPU Adreno 618, which supports 1.1 Vulkans. Nothing changes, therefore, compared to the standard version (Snapdragon 730) if it weren't for the presence of some more specific optimization for gaming. These should therefore guarantee better performance than 15% compared to the standard model. They complete the department, however, 8GB of RAM LPDDR4X e 256GB of UFS 2.1 memory. The latter is not expandable in any way.

As specified at the beginning, I would have imagined that I was in front of a higher-end device. In fact, using this smartphone on a daily basis, in fact, I didn't encounter any problems, managing to carry out all the operations I usually perform with the device in a simple and fast way. Also on applications heavier the phone expressed noteworthy performance, managing to run smoothly. In fact, I tried to play for long sessions at Call of Duty Mobile, hoping to put the product under pressure. Despite everything, however, I was able to enjoy a very satisfying gaming, without lag and without the temperatures on the rear body reaching alarming levels. Also during the various test in fact, the smartphone has never gone into thermal throttling.

Obviously for a less intense use, with Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Netflix and little else the phone answers well. You almost feel like you are holding a top of the range. This is an aspect that has really struck me. Although the difference in speed is still noticeable compared to a Snapdragon 855, we are not talking about an abyssal distance between the two chipsets.

We have never named the software installed on this device until now. Therefore, on OPPO Reno 2 there is room for ColorOS 6.1, Based on Android 9 Pie and with security patches dating back to August 5th, 2019. It is, therefore, a customization of the Android stock interface absolutely different from any other. On some aspects, however, I do not consider it too different from the MIUI of Xiaomi, which in any case in these years has also been able to satisfy the tastes of us Europeans. On ColorOS, in fact, we find a style that is still too faithful to oriental culture, which I believe does not go very well with our preferences.

I was able to appreciate, however, the speed of access to the various ones menu and all animations that exist between one application and another. At times, in fact, it almost seems to be inside a device Apple such is the care shown by the various transitions. We do not have access to a display with 90Hz refresh rate but it does not matter, because the user experience is really at the top. All the icons are very colorful, as are the quick toggles, and the system apps are treated in detail, even at a graphic level. With a swipe to the right, then, you access a page dedicated to theIntelligent assistant which offers some shortcuts and various different functions that could be useful in everyday life.

What I liked a little less, only on an aesthetic level, are the notification icons top left. I've always been used to displaying the application from where I received a message, but on this smartphone, the icons have an embarrassing graphic. With the next update we hope, therefore, that this choice will be modified.

OPPO Reno 2

Taking a closer look at the technical features, let's see how there is a rear room quad on this smartphone. On the main module, therefore, we find a sensor Sony IMX586 da 48 mega-pixels, with f / 1.7 optic (OIS). Next, we find the telephoto lens from 13 mega-pixels with f / 2.4 opening and possibility to exploit it 2x optical zoom. If it is necessary, then, you can also activate the 5x hybrid zoom, which however loses something in terms of quality compared to the other solutions. Continuing our ascent, we then find the wide-angle lens from 8 mega-pixels and finally the sensor da 2 mega-pixels used for calculating depth of field.

If you want to take advantage of the 48 mega-pixel lens to its full potential, you will have to set it manually within the settings. I remind you, however, that with this option it will no longer be possible to exploit the other rooms, being able to shoot practically only with this objective.

During the daytime hours, however, the distance between the 12 mega-pixels Pre-set and the 48 mega-pixels is not so large. There is a subtle difference in terms of detail but, ultimately, in everyday use you will struggle to notice this detail. Despite this, in all situations of good light the device behaves very well, always managing to discreetly manage the ambient brightness. By keeping theAutomatic HDR, then, there is no risk of taking overexposed images in the most difficult conditions. All the photographic lenses support the various software implementations offered by the phone, which is why even taking advantage of it 2x optical zoom noteworthy shots are obtained. Only the wide angle, unfortunately, shows a worse definition to the naked eye, failing to fully satisfy.

In the darkest hours of the evening the quality does not remain very high and the photographic noise it manifests itself in a more marked manner. Despite this, with the night mode you can get much more defined pictures than normal. This function, in fact, more saturates the colors and returns a clearly better overall quality. I do not recommend, finally, the use of 5x hybrid zoom and wide angle, given that in these cases the images are really too poor in terms of quality.

With the front sensor from 16 mega-pixels and opening f / 2.0, instead, we get good quality photos. In my humble opinion, however, these do not differ much from those taken with the first model. In fact, a good one is maintained light calibration and the subject in the foreground is never too overexposed. Also with regard to the bokeh effect, therefore, it behaves very well. I recommend, however, to keep theAutomatic HDR always active, so that this tool can better manage the image quality in more delicate situations.

OPPO Reno 2 has managed to show a huge upgrade over the previous edition regarding video quality. On this device, in fact, the mode is also available Ultra Steady, which uses stabilization OIS e EIS, going to use the main sensor from 48 mega-pixel. With this active mode, it is possible to obtain, therefore, videos that are very stable and almost free of imperfections, especially during daylight hours. However, you can still shoot movies in 1080p to 60fps o 4K is 30fps.

By making several passages between the various chambers, there is no particular disturbance. All the transitions they are quite immediate and fluid, although sometimes it is possible to notice some small clicks too many. You won't have any problems, however, with focus or stabilization, even using different optics. Only in night I noticed some more problems in this sense, with the main sensor that didn't always fit the subject to focus. Remember, however, that with the wide-angle lens it is not possible to shoot in 4K.

Audio & Connectivity

Having a single one available speaker lower, the sound quality is not great. All low frequencies are completely canceled and the sound, therefore, is not very full-bodied. At most volume then, it is possible to remain quietly close to the smartphone, as the power is not so disruptive. Obviously the general quality improves in the headphones, even if the ones supplied are not exactly as one might have expected. In fact, they too return a rather flat sound.

During the calls, instead, the situation drastically improves. With the ear capsule, in fact, it is possible to speak well without any disturbance or problem.

From the point of view of connectivity on OPPO Reno 2 we find a module 802.11 Wi-Fi a / b / g / n / ac dual frequency, assisted by external support to the LTE network with 20 band included and al 4G VoLTE. So with both modules, I didn't feel any connection problems. I was able to surf the whole house with Wi-Fi, even in the less covered areas. On the outside, then, I could almost always take advantage of the 4G + network, except in some less exposed places. For the rest, then, we find the Bluetooth 5.0, L 'NFC, and the GPS / A-GPS / Beidou / GLONASS / GALILEO which always guaranteed me precise satellite navigation, without any hitch.

Under the body of this device resides a battery from 4.000 mAh. With this unit, therefore, I managed to reach 4 hours of active screen on an 12 hours of use basis, with still the 48% of battery remaining. Therefore, you will not struggle to reach the 6 hours on screen turned on over a whole day. If put under stress, in fact, OPPO Reno 2 consumes very little, especially in standby. Not reaching, then, high temperatures during the exercise of all activities, it preserves its own battery more.

In the event that, however, you are short of autonomy, this device only uses 1 15 hours and minutes to recharge by 10 to 100%. All this is possible, however, thanks to the power supply in the package, which shows an output from 5V / 4A, and the technology VOOC 3.0 which allows you to switch from 0 to 50% in just 30 minutes.

Price & Conclusions

This OPPO Reno 2 is sold on all major online stores at the listed price of 499 €. It is therefore a figure that, commensurate with the performance of the product, I believe more than valid. If economic demands, however, were to reach the 450 euro threshold in the short term, then it would be really perfect. This device, in fact, allows even the less experienced to be able to take noteworthy photographs, taking advantage of all the technology that the company makes available in this sector. Also in the field Video, you could almost leave your camera at home and take back your business only with the use of this instrument, although in the evening the quality is still worse.

I therefore recommend the purchase of this device to anyone interested and, above all, to all those who are looking for a reliable product with an attractive aesthetic profile. It will certainly not be a top-of-the-range product but, in everyday use, this great difference is not felt.
