A few weeks ago a Monaco of Bavaria the new and highly anticipated was presented Huawei Mate 30 Pro, or the new top of the range of the Chinese company which, however, should arrive in Italy without services Google Native. Precisely for this reason we have decided to carry out a thorough test to see if, to date, it is possible to use a device without GMS. So let's not lose ourselves in further talk and let's analyze it in more detail in our complete review.
Huawei Mate 30 Pro Review
Unboxing - Huawei Mate 30 Pro
The sales package is made of black cardboard and inside we find the following equipment:
- Huawei Mate 30 Pro;
- hard plastic cover;
- power supply with Huawei Super Charge support from 40W;
- USB data transfer cable - USB Type-C;
- headphones with USB Type-C input;
- pin for the SIM slot;
- instruction manual.
Design and construction
Huawei Mate 30 Pro has a design very particular and original, as it represents an evolution in a more modern and attractive key of the previous model, which had satisfied me in the same way. In fact, the coloring, the curved edges, the very large display and the circle on the back cover have made me fall in love with this device. As in every review, I would like to remind you again that this part of the evaluation is completely subjective, as people's tastes change based on their own parameters.
Instead, what is objective is the quality of the materials used that make the Huawei Mate 30 Pro un premium device. In fact, at the back we have a back cover in shiny and knurled glass at the same time with protection Corning Gorilla Glass 6 while the frame is in solid aluminum. In general the structure is very robust even if, of course, the dimensions are not really compact: 158.1 x 73.1 x 8.8 millimeters for a weight of 198 grams. Fortunately, the cake edge-to-edge curved helps us in the handle, but using it with one hand will be a bit difficult.
In order to increase the angle of curvature of the side edges, Huawei has removed the volume balance and moved the power button a little lower, but don't worry, after 3 days you will immediately make thehabit and using virtual keys to turn up the volume will be a real pleasure. In fact, to activate the latter just do a double tap on top of one of the two side edges and then move your finger up or down. The system works great and there are no involuntary touches during daily use although I would have preferred the graphics to be slightly more low because with one hand it is difficult to reach the maximum volume.
For the rest I really appreciated the presence of the infrared sensor on the upper profile, which is accompanied by the microphone useful for reducing ambient noise, unlike the lower one where there is the Huawei SIM / NM Card slot, the main microphone, the USB Type-C port and the system speaker . On the right side we find only the power button, while in front of the front camera and the ToF sensor we also find the IR sensor for 3D facial recognition, as well as the various brightness and proximity sensors.
Like on Huawei P30 Pro also here we have to say goodbye to the ear capsule, as the audio will be transmitted through the display. Likewise, the fingerprint sensor under the front panel and IP68 certification which makes it resistant to water and dust.
In short, in my opinion the Chinese company has created another extremely device refined of class, although I recognize that the design is very particular and everyone might not like it.
Display - Huawei Mate 30 Pro
Il Huawei Mate 30 Pro has a display AMOLED da 6.53 inches diagonal with resolution Full HD + (2400 x 1176 pixels), density of PPI 409 and format 18.4:9.
This panel is defined by the company "Display Horizon", as it presents one double curvature ad 88 ° on the sides, which facilitates the grip of the device and will give us the idea of holding it only a big screen since the frames all along the body have been optimized very much, both the upper / lower and the lateral ones. In short, the visual impact will leave you speechless. However, under a strong direct light this wide angle will cause gods reflections at the edges, which could be annoying or could prevent us from reading correctly. Nothing excessive, but it was important to point out the strengths and weaknesses of a similar display.
Nevertheless, know that reading in direct sunlight happens without any kind of problem since the maximum brightness it is very good and, moreover, when a critical situation is detected, the smartphone will increase the brightness to its own maximum peak (beyond the standard that we can set through the quick toggle menu).
With regard to the calibration of colors we have two modes: Intense e Normal. The second represents the colors more faithfully and will be perfect if you want to edit photographs or apply color correction filters, but the first has that extra character that makes the experience more explosive thanks to more loaded colors, but never overly vivid.
In any case, however, you can change the color calibration and their temperature through the settings. Moreover, it is good to point out that we also find the mode "Natural shade" which automatically adjusts the color temperature based on the ambient lighting, trying to emulate the experience of reading on paper.
Finally, there is no lack of Dark mode Night mode, system gestures and Smart display resolution.
Hardware and Performance
In the hardware sector we find a welcome change compared to its predecessors, as the Huawei Mate 30 Pro owns the new chipset Kirin 990, presented last month atIFA di Berlin. This chipset is made with a production process a 7 nm and includes a processor octa-core with a maximum clock frequency of 2.86 GHz which complements the new NPU with architecture DaVinci even more powerful, an ARM GPU Mali G76 MP16, 8 GB di RAM LPDDR4X, 256 GB UFS 3.0 storage expandable through NM Card.
In this case talking about performance is almost useless since the terminal is a real one splinter. Application opening is snapshot and during daily use the smartphone will ensure maximum responsiveness, furthermore, thanks to the full integration of artificial intelligence, the device will automatically optimize the system based on our type of use and our habits.
Turning to Gaming here too we have not encountered any kind of problem, as the smartphone manages to perform in an excellent manner any title, from the heaviest to the lightest, always guaranteeing the maximum resolution and a constant frame rate.
La camera is one of the main strengths of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, so much so that it also inspired the design of the smartphone, as the rear circular module should remember the lens of a professional camera. On board we find the following sensors:
- Primary from 40 MP with opening f/ 1.6, focal length of 27 mm and OIS;
- Wide angle from 40 MP with opening f/ 1.8, focal length of 17 mm and Super Wide Angle Movie Camera;
- Telephoto lens from 8 MP with opening f/ 2.4, focal length from 80 mm, OIS, optical zoom 3x, hybrid 5x and digital 30x;
- 3D sensor;
- Selfie camera from 32 MP with opening f/ 2.0.
Even in this case there is very little to say, except that we are facing a smartphone complete from every point of view. In support of my statement I must also point out that there is the possibility of record video in Super slow motion to 7680 fps a 720p and this is a feature that we do not find on board any other smartphone, without considering the fact that the cost of professional machines dedicated to this is decidedly higher. Obviously the quality differs, but do not underestimate that of the Mate 30 Pro, because by day it will surprise you.
Returning to the photo, in good light conditions the quality is excellent, the colors are faithfully represented and, above all, the appearance of the photos is very natural, just like a professional machine, without a particular forced intervention of the HDR. The definition is level and even using the various zooms it denotes the quality we have already had the opportunity to appreciate also on Huawei P30 Pro.
The only small aspect I would like to point out is that in automatic mode sometimes theexposure tends to be slightly higher than necessary. However, if you want to take pictures according to your parameters, you can opt for the Pro mode. The portrait mode it is very precise in shaping the subject and offers a bokeh effect quite natural. Finally, the camera is far more than enough wide-angle lens which has a good color balance and only minimal distortion.
Di will be the camera confirms its goodness, as the shots are very bright, well defined, although there is still the aspect that I pointed out earlier. Both with it zoom that with the wide-angle lens the results are noteworthy and the night mode will give a great hand in both low light and in situations of sufficient brightness, guaranteeing greater impact when shooting.
Frontally, instead, we have a sensor from 32 mega-pixels that takes good photos in favorable light conditions, but that at night it limps a little. In fact, during the day we always have good colors and good lighting management, but in the evening we should keep our hands very still otherwise the photos will be micro moves. For the rest, however, the shots have a good brightness and a faithful chromatic representation.
I video can be registered up to 4K a 60 fps and in general the quality is very good, as are the colors, the stabilization and the management of the lights. As we said at the beginning, we can also record videos in Super slow motion a 7680 fps, which is incredible if we consider that we are talking about tiny sensors for smartphones. Obviously the quality is sufficient only during the day, but this integration must be appreciated.
L'audio outgoing from the single lower speaker is very powerful and enjoy a good balance of frequencies, in fact, it is possible to notice thick bass for a smartphone, as well as a proper balance between medium and high.
During the calls we will not regret the absence of the earpiece since the audio output from the display is crystal clear, although at maximum volume it is a bit too easy for an external person to overhear conversation. Great microphone, too bad for the absence of the mini-jack input.
Huawei Mate 30 Pro has two versions, or the standard one with 4G is that 5G which, of course, costs more. In our case we are testing the first variant and, as usual Huawei, the reception is excellent and we can get a signal even when the others are struggling.
On board there is also the Wi-Fi ac Dual Band, Bluetooth 5.0, Dual-frequency GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS / Galileo / BeiDou el 'NFC which, however, cannot currently be used to pay with Google Pay. For the rest, everything works smoothly, both satellite navigation and Bluetooth connection with other devices.
Il fingerprint sensor below the display it is really very fast and precise, but I confess that I used it very little, because most of the time I didn't have time to wake up the display that the facial recognition 3D unlocked the device. In fact, this is definitely fast and precise on all occasions, even at night.
We now come to the hottest topic, or the software. Before doing this, however, it is good to make a distinction because I will speak before theEMUI in itself and then I will address the subject Google.
In fact, Huawei Mate 30 Pro is moved byEMUI 10 based on Android 10 and the difference compared to the previous variants is easily noticeable. Indeed, the icon el 'graphic interface were svecchiate e streamlined, ensuring a much more experience simple e intuitive. In all this we always find the usual numerous customizations of Huawei, including also the Digital Management and some new ones "Aerial gestures" if so we can define them. The latter will allow us to shake pages or acquire screenshot even if the first seems to work only in one direction, so it needs optimization.
It does not end here though, because since 100% is not a definitive software, the system has some bug such as the impossibility of hearing theaudio in stories di Instagram when we are in vibration / silent mode (except through some more complex ploy or switching to normal mode), or the impossibility of seeing photos or selecting other things after taking selfies. In short, some small aspects that we hope will be settled in the future, as for the rest the interface is well designed.
Speaking instead of Google the situation is particular because natively it is possible to use only theAppGallery di Huawei to download applications but, to date, we find almost none of them really useful or that we use in everyday life. To overcome this problem in a "clean" way we can take advantage of the app Phone Clone di Huawei and transport all files and applications in use on another phone. Obviously, not all of them will be passed on Mate 30 Pro, especially those of Google or those that take advantage of its services and, above all, it will not be possible to make updates since we will not have a store to rely on.
If you want to install i GMS know that there is a method, but it is no longer the one used a few weeks ago since the backdoor è been closed. I leave you the link in case you need it. Alternatively, if you are not like that "Geeks" to perform this procedure, you will be able to install all the applications you need on APKMirror, through which you can also make updates.
If you want to know more about the impressions I had using the smartphone without GMS then you can take a look at the video that I made up YouTube clicking here.
To conclude this aspect it is good to say that at this moment we are in a situation of stall, In which Huawei is moving from being dependent on Google services all'esserne totally independent developing its own operating system based on a different ecosystem. So right now being without Google is certainly difficult, but not impossible in the near future when we see what HarmonyOS will have to offer us.
Autonomy - Huawei Mate 30 Pro
Under the body of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro we find a battery from 4500 mAh that allows us to have a great autonomy and this in part is also thanks to theassenza to the Google services.
Indeed, with intense use (mixed data network and Wi-Fi) I managed to average about 6 hours di active screen, while with the data network alone I managed to get an average of about 5 hours and minutes 30.
From the point of view of the energy saving are present 3 profiles:
- High performance;
- Energy saving;
- Ultra energy saving.
Taking advantage of one of the last two options it will be possible to improve the performance of the battery even more limiting the clock of processor o scaling the display resolution.
Let's not forget to add that the Mate 30 Pro supports the Huawei SuperCharge fast charge a 40W wireless charging to 27W is that reverse to recharge other devices that support wireless charging. Regarding the first aspect the results are exceptional, because it will be possible to carry the device from 0 to 100% in about 60 minutes!
Conclusions - Huawei Mate 30 Pro
It is not easy to draw conclusions for this Huawei Mate 30 Pro because for almost all aspects it is the top of the range to beat, but theabsence of Google services puts the stick between the wheels. This may not even be a problem for everyone with a guide install them manually, but the fact remains that the price it stands around the 1.099 €, a little too much given that at the moment for the software you have to go down to gods compromises.
This does not mean that the smartphone in question is how much better the market can offer us, especially if we talk about camera, where the rivals that can give him a hard time are very few, not to mention the magnificent display, the crackling hardware and the true tank autonomy. In conclusion, Huawei Mate 30 Pro è very beautifull, but at the moment is in one transition phase between the dependence da Google and own independence which makes it difficult to adapt to daily use. Having said that, we can't wait to try HarmonyOS to see an extra player and to test if you can really stay without Google.
At the moment we don't know exactly when it will arrive in Italy and the precise price, but in the presentation phase they said it would arrive by end of the year a 1.099 €. We will definitely keep you updated.
