review oppo reno z

Only a few months ago OPPO left us pleasantly surprised thanks to the new Reno range, composed by standard model and its variant 10X Zoom and that finds new lymph grace a OPPO Reno Z, the small of the family coming on July 10 in Italy . The smartphone has some features in common with older brothers but must necessarily opt for some waivers. How did the newcomer behave in our tests? And what are the differences and similarities with previous models? For these and other answers, here you are served with the complete review of OPPO Reno Z.

Review OPPO Reno Z

Sales package - OPPO Reno Z

The sales box of the device looks like an elongated cardboard, pearl-colored and with an effect glittering. Really very beautiful and elegant and if these are the prerequisites for the newcomer ... well it could be love at first sight! The package contains the following equipment:

  • OPPO Reno Z;
  • semi-rigid silicone cover;
  • OPPO earphones;
  • 5V 4A fast charging power supply;
  • USB data cable - USB Type-C;
  • pin for the SIM slot;
  • manuals.

Design and construction

Let's start immediately with the thorniest question: the design of OPPO Reno Z it is only partly based on the basic model. On this tour, the Chinese company has decided to focus on a selfie camera set in a drop-shaped notch, a definitely more classic solution than the retractable module shark fin to which we have been accustomed. Nevertheless elegance is the password: the style of the back cover is maintained, with the characteristic strip Designed by OPPO, a vertical dual chamber flush with the protective glass panel Gorilla Glass 5 (equipped with 3D curvature along the edges) and a small one ceramic sphere - call O-Dot -that protects the camera when the device is placed on a flat surface. In short, style and safety to handle your Reno Z with complete peace of mind.

Smartphone measures 157.3 x 74.9 x 9.1 mm, resulting slightly larger than the Reno. As for the various external elements, along the upper edge - the perimeter frame is made of polycarbonate - there is space for the microphone to reduce ambient noise, while on the contrary we have the loudspeaker, the USB Type-C port, the main microphone and the input mini-jack from 3.5 mm for headphones.

The Power button - with a small green groove - is positioned along the right edge; on the left we have the Dual SIM slot and the volume rocker. The earpiece is flush with the body and overall an excellent job has been done optimization of the frames around the display. The device is left in the hand and does not appear to have too slippery surfaces; also i corners beveled they give a sense of harmony that makes us forget the small defects scattered here and there (such as the thickness that is not exactly contained and the plastic frame).

Display

On board of ours OPPO Reno Z find a panel space AMOLED da 6.4 inches of diagonal with Full HD + resolution (2340 x 1080 pixel) and ratio in 19.5: 9. The screen is protected by a glass Corning Gorilla Glass 5, just like the back. Appeal an fingerprint reader digital integrated in the display, really reliable and lightning-fast in the release.

The panel returns faithful colors and with the right degree of saturation (except for some more impressive shades), good viewing angles, brightness level and blacks, being an OLED solution. The presence of the drop notch is noticeable when playing multimedia content, but it is not a detail that affects the user experience too much.

In Settings, Display and Brightness you can adjust the color temperature of the screen; you will also find the entry Clock Screen, Alias Always-on Display. The customizations for this feature and the display in general are not very deep but there are the right options to be satisfied.

Hardware and Performance

The little one of the Reno family changes course compared to big brothers (with Qualcomm chipsets) and focuses on SoC MediaTek Helio P90, solution octa-core (2 Cortex-A75 + 6 Cortex-A55) with a maximum frequency of 2.2 GHz and a base of 2.0 GHz. Everything is supported by 4 GB of RAM LPDDR4x e 128 GB of internal memory.

We immediately get to the heart of things: the chipset on board OPPO Reno Z goes perfectly with the rest of the features, bringing out a good mid-range, with satisfactory performance. The system is quite snappy, even though we sometimes have a very slight delay in opening / closing applications (especially those not in the background). There are no obvious slowdowns, freezes, random restarts and other abominations and the experience of use is the best.

As usual - for me it is almost an obligation to remember it - by activating the Developer Options and lowering to 0.5x animations (preview, transition and animator duration), the performances will be even more satisfying.

Let's finish with the GPU IMG PowerVR GM 9446 to 970 MHz, which will allow you to play the most famous titles without too much effort. Obviously it is clear that this is not a gaming smartphone but it knows its stuff anyway, offering three different heat dissipation systems (three layers of graphite, thermal gel and a passive cooling system with copper pipette). However, it's better to avoid games that are too heavy, leaving the graphics settings at maximum. As for the playing time, a healthy and long session of Brawl Stars did not cause any excessive boiling (it remains normal) or headache to the device.

Benchmark - OPPO Reno Z

Software

The device mounts the last one ColorOS 6on a base Android 9 Pie and with security patches updated to June 2019. Those who are used to the devices of the OPPO brand and its UI will be pleasantly surprised by the look of the new version of the software, characterized by a fresh interface, with new icons and animations.

La ColorOS 6 it behaves in an excellent way and is making great strides in becoming an increasingly western software. Many features and customizations for a full and satisfying experience.

The new OPPO Reno Z winks at the most hardened gamers thanks to technology Hyper Boost 2.0 (with Frame Boost and Touch Boost), which allows you to optimize games thanks to better management of background processes. Continue with the Game Assistant (it is activated when games are started and can be recalled with a swipe along the left edge), which handles the management of notifications and quick selection operations during gaming. Finally we have the Game Space, software that takes care of collecting the titles installed on the device so as to quickly access the settings for each of them.

On the security side, to accompany the ID sensor below the display, we find the Face Unlock. Although it is an 2D solution (and therefore without ad hoc hardware) it is particularly fast in recognizing and releasing the device.

Full screen gestures complete the package smart sidebar (to customize with your favorite apps), the ability to clone app to manage two accounts simultaneously. Also present is programmed on / off, pressing the Power button to call up Google Assistant and the ability to set Themes and choose to activate the App Drawer.

Photo quality - OPPO Reno Z

review oppo reno z

The photographic sector of OPPO Reno Z offers a dual camera with a Sony main sensor IMX586  da 48 mega-pixels (f/1.7) accompanied by a secondary 5 mega-pixel module dedicated to the depth of field. It is a package that is more than sufficient for a device of this range, able to return good shots, with a lot of recognition of the scenes through AI.

In images with a bokeh effect, the sensor is able to cut out the foreground subjects very well, while the general quality of the photos does not satisfy poco in well-lit situations. There are some imperfections and some overexposure defects but the images have faithful colors and a good level of detail. In addition - despite not having a macro lens - some close encounters have reported really satisfying results.

The level of detail decreases in low light situations and this is where the Ultra Night Mode 2.0, dedicated to night shots. Do not expect miracles and you will need a very steady hand but overall this improvement knows its own and manages to illuminate even very desperate situations.

Frontally, in the drop notch, we find a selfie camera from 32 mega-pixels with opening f/2.0. It is a good form for the social field, with well balanced daytime photos (even if with not always impeccable lighting management). In the evening the results inevitably fall, with slightly pasty images. Excellent portrait mode and bokeh, with really nice self-portraits.

The device is able to record videos in 4K at 30 fps and Full HD at 60 fps really well done in terms of quality and colors, but leaving something to be desired in terms of stabilization.

Connectivity and audio quality

 The middle of the range comes with a module Dual SIM LTE: the audio on call appears to have a fairly high sound while we have not encountered any problems with regards to reception. The connectivity package offers Wi-Fi Dual Band e Bluetooth 5.0. No problem even with regards to navigation via GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS / Galileo, both by car and on foot. Also present the appealNFC, to the delight of the most demanding.
Good also the sound in headphones and through wireless solutions: the presence of the mini-jack input from 3.5 mm will certainly be a godsend for the most loyal. Finally, as regards the audio part of OPPO Reno Z, the company has opted for a configuration a double speaker, with a loudspeaker placed along the lower edge (a bit uncomfortable, when holding the device in hand you must be careful not to "plug" it) and a secondary one inside the ear capsule.

Autonomy

The mid-range comes with a battery from 4035 mAh, which allows you to arrive at the end of the day without too many problems and with a more economical use, it is also possible to add half a day. During our tests, OPPO Reno Z has reached the 6 display hours on with a fairly intense use, made of gaming, Web browsing, GPS, music playback via wireless headphones and a constant use of Bluetooth for wearable. Moreover, thanks to the multiple settings and energy saving modes it will be possible to save oneself even in the most critical moments.

Charging from 0 to 100% takes place in less than 1 now and 30 minutes thanks to the proprietary fast charge VOOC 3.0 from 20W, with the supplied charger.

Review OPPO Reno Z - Price and Conclusions

Despite OPPO Reno Z both to all effects the "small" of the family and arrivals with a "weakened" hardware sector, the device is able to give many satisfactions. Navigation within the interface is pleasant, the photographic package offers many ideas and really good shots and the fresh and elegant design makes it ideal for everyone (and for every occasion). We have tried the version Jet Black, as beautiful as canonical, but the Aurora Purple variant is also on sale, definitely more stylish (if you like the genre, of course).

Wanting to find some defects we have a perimeter frame in polycarbonate (it would have been better in aluminum!) That leaves a bit of bitterness in the mouth while the dimensions - above all the thickness - seem excessive and unjustified. We also have a substantial difference compared to the rest of the range: here the look - however pleasant - is certainly easier than the brothers and their selfie pop-up room.

The new Reno Z will be on sale in Italy from the 10 July, at the price of 349 €, a figure perhaps too high given the competitors on the square in the same band. These include even the same Reno standard, available at a similar street price brother. But rest assured because in a few weeks the price could reach € 299 and therefore represent an excellent solution. However, if for you the smartphone with the pop-up camera may be too futuristic or excessive for your tastes, OPPO Reno Z can definitely do for you right now.
