Who knows and follows OPPO for some time he has known how much the Chinese brand treats its devices down to the smallest details, especially with regards to the design. Also in this case, the company has produced an elegant and extremely innovative smartphone thanks to a pop-up room with a mechanism different from the common one. We are talking about OPPO Reno, a terminal belonging to the middle range that tries to dare more thanks to its good technical data sheet combined with a sophisticated look. Has he managed to surprise us? Let's find out in our review.

OPPO Reno Review

Unboxing - OPPO Reno

For this smartphone a different packaging has been realized from all the other devices. In fact, we have a sales package with an elongated shape and really elegant aesthetics and inside we find the following equipment:

  • OPPO Reno;
  • semi-rigid silicone cover (very resistant);
  • OPPO earphones;
  • 20W fast-charging power supply;
  • USB data cable - USB Type-C;
  • pin for the SIM slot;
  • manuals.

Design and construction

As said at the beginning, from the point of view of design and construction OPPO it is a guarantee. Indeed, OPPO Reno it has been made with meticulous attention to detail and the feeling returned is extremely solid. The look is definitely elegance thanks to a back cover opaque green with a central glass strip and a photographic module flush with the body. Furthermore, there is also theO-Dot, or a small sphere of ceramic placed under the dual camera, which has the purpose of to preserve la back cover of the smartphone when it is placed on flat surfaces.

However, you will have to be careful with the latter because I have found some scratch too much after inserting the device in the backpack. Probably during the movement he came into contact with some object (eg pen drive), the fact is that I highly recommend the use of the cover provided.

The other detail of OPPO Reno and the camera a disappearance, which has been inserted in a pop-up module aesthetically different from the usual. In fact, once activated it will look like one shark fin (it is defined in fact the "Shark fin selfie camera"). The mechanism is secured for over 200.000 use, or approximately 5 years if we consider an average of 100 openings per day. Furthermore, there is a mechanism that prevents damage due to accidental falls, in fact the module will close automatically when it is perceived that the phone is in free fall.

The opening takes place in 0.8 seconds and the facial release is still very fast, although it is slightly less fast than traditional devices with selfies in plain sight. In fact, inside this module we find the front camera, the ear capsule and the brightness and proximity sensor, as well as the LED flash of the rear sensor.

Finally, I would like to point out that a bit of is being withheld dust inside it, but it is a common behavior both in these devices and in those with the slider. In fact, by force of circumstances there will be a slight deposit of dust which, however, will be cleaned very easily and which will not affect the correct functioning of the device.

Below are the system speaker, the mini-jack input, the USB Type-C port and the main microphone. On the right side we have the power button unlike the left one on which the volume rocker and the dual Nano SIM slot reside.

Finally, the dimensions are not really compact, but thanks to the bevelled edges it is possible to better grip the smartphone, although there will still be some difficulty in reaching the notification curtain with one hand. The smartphone measures 156.6 x 74.3 x 0.90 centimeters for a weight of 185 grams.

The display ofOPPO Reno it is a unit AMOLED da 6.4 inches diagonal with resolution Full HD + (2340 x 1080 pixels), density of PPI 402, relationship 19.5:9 and screen-to-body ratio of 93.1%.

The striking thing about this panel is the absence of any type of notch, hole or various frames. Indeed, OPPO Reno it has a very large, clean and perfect display for watching movies and gaming.

The minimum and maximum brightness are very good, as are the colors, which are beautiful vivid, but never too saturated. In any case you can calibrate the temperature in the specific menu in the settings.

No problems with viewing angles and with blacks, as the display AMOLED it is perfect in these situations. Good oleophobicity and resistance to scratches.

Hardware and Performance

L'OPPO Reno is moved by a chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 710, which is inclusive of an octa-core processor with a maximum clock frequency of 2.2 GHz, a GPS Adreno 616, 6 GB of RAM LPDDR4X, 256 GB of internal memory UFS 2.1 not expandable via microSD.

Lo smartphone runs in an excellent way and we have not encountered problems of any kind during the opening and closing of the app, but perhaps we encounter an interface that penalizes usability a little bit because it makes everything slightly more cumbersome and slow. Despite the color OS has been renewed, there are still some small improvements to be made and bugs to fix, but it must also be said that ours is a unit for printing, so it may be less optimized than the one that will be sold.

No problem with the Gaming, since the GPU reproduces all the titles at maximum performance thanks also to the mode Hyper Boost. In fact, we have not found any problems or with lighter games like Subway Surfersnor with heavier ones like PUBG.

Benchmark - OPPO Reno

Camera - OPPO Reno

L'OPPO Reno It is equipped with a dual rear camera with sensors from 48 + 5 mega-pixel with main sensor Sony IMX586 with opening f / 1.7, PDAF autofocus and dual LED flash.

In conditions of good brightness the shots are really good for the mid-range, in fact, we have a excellent level of detail, a satisfactory natural bokeh and a faithful chromatic representation. Again we have theartificial intelligence that intervenes according to the scene and a very precise portrait mode in identifying the contours of the subject to create the blurred.

Actually, in these conditions the smartphone behaves in an excellent manner and will hardly disappoint you. The only comment I want to make concerns theno wide-angle camera which I find very pleasant and amusing, since now more and more brands are adding it to their devices.

In night the quality drops slightly and the background noise can be noticed more in critical situations, but in general the smartphone exceeds the sufficiency here too thanks to an improved night mode compared to other smartphones, which allows us to have more brightness, sharpness and contrast. In short, theOPPO Reno it will tend to suffer only when there is very little light.

Talking about the front camera, on the smartphone we find a sensor from 16 mega-pixels with opening f / 2.0. The results are a bit fluctuating because while the quality is really good during the day thanks to the excellent colors and the good management of the lights, in the evening (with dim light) the noise will tend to increase more, offering us enough shots for sharing in the stories, but nothing more.

I video can be registered up to the maximum resolution of 4K to 30 FPS. The general quality is good thanks to faithful colors and a very fast focus but, unfortunately, digital stabilization cannot do very well.

L'audio coming out of the lower speaker is very powerful and enjoys a good balance of frequencies. In fact, listening to songs of various kinds you will notice the satisfactory presence of the bass, especially in headphones where the audio improves significantly.

With regard to the headset capsuleinstead, this is located in the scroll module and the negative aspect is that hearing an even louder and clearer audio will be necessary to put the ear on the upper edge. If you do not, you will hear your caller with a lower volume.

Il microphone instead it works perfectly and we didn't encounter any problems during calls.

OPPO Reno supports Dual SIM with connectivity 4G LTE Cat. 15 support for the 20 band. We did not encounter any problems in the reception, indeed, this turns out to be quite good. For the rest we find the Wi-Fi Dual Band a / b / g / n / ac, USB Type-C 2.0 with OTG support, Bluetooth 5.0 and also NFC, without forgetting then GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS / Beidou / Galileo, which will guarantee us excellent satellite navigation with a precise and reactive signal fix.

As for the unlocking methods, theOPPO Reno owns both the fingerprint sensor below the display and the Face Unlock through the selfie camera and not through a dedicated sensor. Speaking of the first I must say that this works quite well and is in the top of the range for precision and responsiveness. We say that the release happens successfully around 9 times on 10, but personally I have always preferred to use the Face Unlock because it has always been very precise and has only rarely lost hits.

In fact, this is really fast and the fact that the pop-up camera needs to exit does not penalize it excessively in speed compared to other competitors. Even in situations of total darkness the smartphone behaves in an excellent manner and always unlocks successfully.

With the series OPPO Reno, the Chinese company proposes a new update of the proprietary interface, or the color OS passing by version 5.2 to the 6.0, based this time on Android 9 Pie (with March 2019 patch) and no higher Oreo.

What then changes with respect to the old software? The design was renewed slightly and refreshed with new backgrounds, new icons, a slightly different layout and new ones animations in 3D such as the one being charged and the Face Unlock.

However, on our sample the system still has some small smears, for example, although we can select different sounds to be set in the opening of the pop-up camera, at the beginning these seemed not to work, leaving the stock one as a base, but after a few hours the audio changed automatically by itself. Finally, some translations should be improved.

Particular attention was paid to the Gaming, as it is present Hyper Boost mode, which accelerates smartphone performance by limiting background processes and ensuring greater performance during gaming sessions. At the same time we also find theGame Assistant which takes care of managing notifications during the most intense games, as well as calls and shortcuts. We conclude with it "Game Space" which allows us to modify specific settings to optimize gaming performance and consumption.

For the rest we find the classics customizations area of color OS like themes, app cloning, split screen and more. However, what is missing is monitoring the display's energy consumption.

In short, we expect some updates that can further improve the software and make it more western and even more responsive.

Under the body of theOPPO Reno we find a battery from 3765 mAh, which guarantees us one very good autonomy. In fact, with intensive use we will be able to achieve even a day and a half of autonomy, not to mention that if you use it less and you will also activate the settings for the energy saving then you will get even better results.

We must specify, however, that to obtain these results they will be necessary some days of break-in. In fact, having had the smartphone for several weeks we can say that in the first days of use the battery did not behave in the same way.

Recharging occurs quickly thanks to the renewed technology VOOC 3.0 which employs about 1 15 hours and minutes to carry your smartphone from 0 to 100%.

Conclusions - OPPO Reno

First of all it is necessary to specify that theOPPO Reno is available in the price list a 499 € and I must admit that, given the precedents, I would have expected a higher price. This does not mean that in this market segment, competition is fierce and others are found competitors to a equal or lower price (For example Xiaomi Mi 9 SE o Xiaomi Mi 9). Of course, as far as the pop-up room is concerned, the design and the display there is no history, but otherwise the price remains a little too high given that we still find some small flaws which, however, could be fixed over time with some updates.

The camera is good, the autonomy also, the performances are close to those of a top of the range thanks to the fast memories, the screen is noteworthy, but the software should be further optimized and the back cover made more resistant.

As soon as the price will fall will definitely be a excellent purchase, but at the moment many users could give up or spend something extra and take home the top of the range Series ReindeerOr l 'OPPO Reno 10x Zoom. Indeed, the latter comes 799 €, about 300 € plus they are not few, but we have a larger display, a camera with superior technology, a larger battery and a more powerful hardware compartment. In short, at that point the purchase would be more justified.
