Il Huawei P30 Pro inherits the goodness shown by P20 Pro and confirms the qualities of Mate 20 Pro, but it does this by lengthening distances again in the photographic field. The competition, one year later, still looks and tries to face the innovations made by Huawei in the smartphone industry that first with P20 Pro and now with P30 Pro, continues to cause much sensation thanks to the obvious investments in research and development.
In today's review we will not only analyze the new smartphone of the Chinese company in detail, but we will also compare it with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro to find out how much difference there is between the two and what could be the perfect device for you.
Huawei P30 Pro Review
The sales package is made in the usual white cardboard and inside we find the following equipment:
- Huawei P30 Pro;
- silicone cover;
- wall power supply with Huawei SuperCharge support and 40 W output;
- data transfer cable;
- earphones with USB Type-C input;
- pin for the SIM slot;
Design and dimensions - Huawei P30 Pro
Regarding the dimensions, the Huawei P30 Pro it is bigger than both Mate 20 Pro that the P20 Proin fact we are talking about 158 x 73.4 x 8.41 millimeters for a weight of 192 grams, unlike the other two which are respectively 157.8 x 72.3 x 8.6 millimeters for 189 grams and 155 x 73.9 x 7.8 millimeters for 180 grams. This increase in size is justified by a wider display that even touches the 6.47 inches.
Overall, the smartphone is not very light to hold and one-handed use is a bit limited but, fortunately, thanks to a well balanced weight and the rounded sides we will be able to balance the situation.
Il Huawei P30 Pro it is impeccably made, is characterized by an incredible solidity and by a meticulous attention to details. Later we find one beautiful back cover in glass with gradient coloring, while the side frame is made of aluminum. What's more, the smartphone has the IP68 certification, which makes it resistant to water and dust.
Going back to talking about the colors, the latter were great innovations that found conflicting opinions. More precisely we have the variant Black, Aurora e Breathing Crystal, or the one in our possession. Personally I think that of Huawei it was a perfect choice because it brought to the market a color that never gets bored thanks to its continuous variation based on the light. We go from white to silver and from purple to blue through orange. In short, a real gem!
Another gem that convinced me was the choice to combine flat sides with the curved sides of the smartphone. Let me explain better, while on the right and left profile we have some soft and smooth lines that facilitate the grip of the device, above and below you can notice completely flat profiles that in turn improve handling, since the little finger is able to support the smartphone with extreme comfort.
Frontally we find the drip notch and the brightness and proximity sensors, while the ear capsule that has been replaced by the technology is not present Huawei Acoustic Display, which will transmit the sound directly from the display thanks to vibrations.
On the upper profile we find the infrared sensor and the microphone useful for the reduction of ambient noise, unlike the opposite side on which we notice the single SIM + NM Card slot, the main microphone, the USB Type-C 3.1 input and the system speaker . Finally, on the right side we find the volume rocker and the power button.
Il Notification LED it is another great absentee, but this has been effectively replaced by theAlways-on Display.
I must say that, despite the difference is little, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro holds itself slightly better in hand and gives us that feeling of greater compactness. Personally I would have preferred that an identical solution be adopted also on Huawei P30 Pro.
Display - Huawei P30 Pro
Il Huawei P30 Pro It is equipped with a panel OLED HDR with curved edges da 6.47 inches diagonal with resolution Full HD + (2340 x 1080 pixels), report 19.5:9, PPI 398 and notch to drop.
The unit is well calibrated and the colors are vivid but never too saturated, besides this presents aexcellent brightness even in direct sunlight. Through the settings, however, it is possible to modify the calibration in a more precise manner or activate a reading filter for the night which reduces the emission of blue light. The light sensor, located under the display, is responsive and responds correctly to light changes.
The only comment we can make comparing it to the panel of Huawei Mate 20 Pro is that of P30 Pro tents accentuate more le red tones, but nothing too obvious.
Among the settings we find different customizations such as the dark mode which will allow us to reduce battery consumption or even the always-on display which will allow us to view the date, time and notifications received but which will not allow us to interact with them. Obviously if you want you can always delete the notch via software.
Il Chin at the bottom, finally, it is rather contained and helps to increase the immersiveness of the panel during use. In short, the display of the Huawei P30 Pro it is a pleasure for the eyes and, despite the curved edges, the system gestures they work great.
Hardware and performance - Huawei P30 Pro
Il Huawei P30 Pro is moved by the last processor produced in-house by the company, or theKirin HiSilicon 980 with production process a 7 nm and maximum clock frequency of 2.6 GHz. The GPU is a Mali-G76 while one is introduced Dual NPU for a renewed and improved management of machine learning and artificial intelligence processing processes. Finally, we also find 8 GB di RAM LPDDR4X e 256 GB di internal memory UFS 2.1 expandable via NM Card of others 256 GB (there are also memory cuts from 128 and 512 GB).
In this case, in Italy il Huawei Mate 20 Pro offers less because, although the same chipset is mounted, it has memory cuts from 6 / 128 GB (expandable via NM Card). We wanted to point out the nation because in other countries the variant from is also sold 8 / 256 GB. So our comparison takes into account smartphones sold officially on the Italian territory with their current prices.
Sin only for the expandability of memory through the NM Card owner of Huawei, which can only be used on the top of the Chinese brand's range, denying us the versatility of a classic microSD.
Le performance smartphone offers are from very high level and, having used until today the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, we can confirm that these turn out to be best, albeit of poco. Compared to the latter, we notice greater smoothness in multitasking and excellent reactivity in opening apps. In short, it is difficult to find fault with the new entry in the house Huawei since it offers the best you can ask for on the market.
During operations that require more computing power we did not find any overheating and this is also due to the production process, which has brought several advantages compared to the previous generation, namely the Kirin 970 of P20 Pro. Among other things, this hardware combined with the excellent EMUI 9.1 allow us to have a level autonomy, but we will talk about this later.
La GPU also performs very well in the reproduction of heavier titles such as PUBG, which is executed with details at most and with a constant framerate. So playing with this smartphone will be a real pleasure!
Cameras - Huawei P30 Pro
Huawei P30 Pro is confirmed again best camera phone on the market renewing the already excellent work done by the predecessors. The integration of software development and the quad camera hardware system allow this smartphone to narrow even further the gap between professional photographic tools such as reflex and smartphones.
Le news introduced on this device are mainly three:
- Main sensor from 40 mega-pixels with opening f / 1.6, OIS and with technology SuperSpectrum which replaces the green pixels with yellow pixels guaranteeing, according to Huawei, up to 40% more brightness in dark environments;
- periscopic telephoto lens da 8 mega-pixels with opening f / 3.4, OIS and with 5X optical zoom that becomes 10X loseless and even 50X in digital;
- sensor ToF for the scanning of the subjects, the 3D modeling through dedicated app and the optimization of the shots.
Finally, how can we not even mention the sensor? ultra wide angle da 20 mega-pixels with opening f / 2.2.
The hardware made available by Huawei, therefore, it is the most complete on the market and, above all, the most performing. The periscopic telephoto lens does an excellent job, taking smartphone photography to a new level. The power zoom in to 50X subjects or writings practically illegible or invisible to human eyes or to competing smartphones is amazing.
The quality of the shots in daylight is very good, the definition is high and we also have a good range of colors, although on some occasions it tends to make the colors stand out more red tones. Also by making some crop in the photo view you can see a definition out of the ordinary in the smartphone panorama. It may seem absurd, but often the yield is close to that of a reflex / mirrorless, as it is guaranteed a good natural bokeh and there is not that "flat" scene typical of phones.
As previously anticipated, the zoom 5X allows to realize Scatti without loss of quality (as well as the 10X) offering an edge over competitors. The stabilization and the algorithms work to perfection allowing to obtain optimal shots in almost all conditions, because in low light conditions the sensor that has an opening f / 3.4 will do slightly more effort. Resorting to 50X the software often "batter" but it is a circumstance more than normal and indeed discounted that anyway manages to give satisfaction.
The mode Super Macro it comes up to 2.5 cm away with a confirmation of the goodness shown on Mate 20 Pro in very close shots, while mode Portrait it has been further refined with an algorithm that is able to better identify the hair or the contours of the framed subjects.
The main sensor works very well thanks to one AI Master aggressive right in many contexts. The shots taken are concrete and very close to reality while theHDR intervenes in the right to recover shooting situations that otherwise would not be optimal.
The presence of the optical stabilizer also on the sensor from 40 mega-pixels it makes itself felt, especially in night. In fact, thanks to the integration of the latter the photos will be less moved than its predecessors. The quality in the absence of light undoubtedly decreases, but still remains very high compared to its competitors. There Night mode it is the same view on the younger brothers and will allow us to take bright, impact-free photos even with a free hand, without the need for a tripod.
Moreover, thanks to technology SuperSpectrum it will be possible to arrive in manual to 409.000 di ISO. The terminal can find light and details where darkness is actually total.
In short, the rear modules perform well in all conditions and upgrades compared to Huawei Mate 20 Pro there was, albeit in the details. In fact, seeing the photos on the smartphone display will often seem to you that the shots are identical, but analyzing them on a monitor the distance between the two is there, although in some conditions the Mate 20 Pro face slightly better. Later I leave you some examples:
In summary here are the differences with the Huawei P30 Pro:
- slightly lower contrast in HDR;
- less definition with zoom in almost all situations;
- sometimes there is less grain with the 5x zoom in conditions of not quite optimal brightness;
- better front-facing camera at night;
- management of lights and lower HDR in the frontal camera in daylight.
Let's move on to the front camera, as we find a sensor from 32 mega-pixels with opening f / 2.0, which gives us some noteworthy shots. I think that from this point of view it is one of the best with regard to daytime shots.
The definition is very high, the management of lights andHDR it is perfect even in the most critical situations where the background is overexposed, the natural bokeh is perfect and the portrait mode is precise. In conclusion, a praise to Huawei which has managed to improve the good things done with Mate 20 Pro.
However, in night the same is not true, as the latter exceeds the new top of the Chinese company. The shots have more detail, better colors and more natural, less lens flare and are also less wavy. Don't get me wrong, the selfies of the Huawei P30 Pro at night they are not to be thrown away, but I preferred the management of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. Probably with an update it will be possible to adjust the shot.
I video are recorded at the maximum resolution 4K a 30 fps while i slow-motion arrives at 960 fps at resolution HD. The stabilization it is very good andautofocus it's definitely fast. On the video front Huawei its devices are getting better and better and it shows. There are software gems already found also on Huawei Mate 20 Pro, or the filters that can be applied in real time like the one that allows us to color only the subject in the foreground and put the background in black and white.
Audio and call - Huawei P30 Pro
Il Huawei P30 Pro owns a single speaker since it is absent the ear capsule. The calls, in fact, are managed through a magnet placed under the panel which, through vibrations, transmits the audio to the display and therefore to the user. The quality is very high and the sound is crystal clear, it will not even seem to you that the standard ear capsule is absent.
Too bad, though, that we have one on board the smartphone mono speaker since others competitors they can boast of a solution stereo (Including Huawei Mate 20 Pro). Despite this, the volume is very high and the yield is satisfactory thanks to a good balance of frequencies, although we are not at the top of the sector.
Connectivity - Huawei P30 Pro
Also from this point of view, Huawei P30 Pro offers the best that can currently be found on the market. In fact, we find a double SIM slot in Nano (or SIM + NM Card) format, the Wi-Fi a / b / g / n / ac Dual band, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, Dual frequency GPS L1 + L5, A-GPS / GLONASS / BeiDou / Galileo / QZSS which works very well and allows us a precise and reactive satellite navigation, the IR sensor which I personally find very useful to control the TV and other devices with infrared and, finally, the door USB Type-C 3.1 which allows you to take advantage of the Desktop Mode connecting an external monitor to the device.
Come da tradizione Huawei the reception is very good and we have not found particular problems even in more isolated areas.
Finally, let us note that I am absent be the FM radio that themini-jack input. The same thing is valid for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro that has the same deficiencies, but that behaves equally well in this sector.
Release Systems - Huawei P30 Pro
Unlike the Mate 20 Pro, Huawei P30 Pro does not present a system of 3D recognition, as we have a notch a drop and therefore there was not the space to insert other sensors besides the photographic one. The system is therefore less sure e less fast, especially at night, but despite this it is still practical and functional.
In conditions of low light, therefore, need for some extra fraction of a second to unlock the smartphone but, alternatively, you can use the fingerprint. Indeed, just like the Mate 20 Pro we have a fingerprint sensor below the display which, this time, has been moved further into bass to make the release action more natural.
Luckily Huawei he decided well to correct the shot, because before we had to place too high in the finger, risking to unbalance the weight of the device.
In general the sensor is fast e reactive but personally, I continue to find this method a little too much intricate e slower compared to the old physical sensors. Obviously, however, it is a compromise to have to accept in order to have a smartphone with a full screen display. However, we can say that the device successfully unlocks the terminal approximately 9 times on 10.
Software - Huawei P30 Pro
The operating system on which the is based Huawei P30 Pro è Android 9 Pie with personalized interface EMUI 9.1 which alters the icon pack and introduces little better AI and software functionality.
Compared to EMUI 9.0 di Huawei Mate 20 Pro we notice aslightly better organization of some submenus such as in the section Display or the introduction of the Dark Mode which will help us save battery using the panel OLED.
There is no lack of course system gestures that work properly despite the curved edges of the Huawei P30 Pro, the Digital Management which shows the data and the timing of use of the smartphone private spaces, one hand mode, gloves mode, cloning of apps and much more.
In short, we now know theEMUI and we know how rich it is with graphic and non-graphic customizations (there are also themes). Among other things, given the increasingly important presence of the voice assistants in our everyday life, the company has introduced a function to recall Google Assistant by long press of the power button for 1 second.
Finally, we also recall that, thanks to the latest update, the Always-on mode which will now also show us the notifications of third-party apps in addition to the classic messages and calls.
Battery - Huawei P30 Pro
Il Huawei P30 Pro is equipped with a battery by well 4200 mAh with quick charging support Huawei SuperCharge a 40W. Moreover, compared to P20 Pro the company introduced the wireless charging a 15W and reverse wireless charging to load other devices.
The autonomy is a great strength of the Huawei P30 Pro because with intense use you will be able to reach even the 7 hours di active display. This is the maximum peak I got, while the minimum was 4 hours. After several use cycles you will see that you will be able to have one medium di 5.30 / 6 hours of active screen without any problem and you will be able to carry out also 1 day and a half of autonomy.
From the point of view of the energy saving are present 3 profiles:
- High performance;
- Energy saving;
- Ultra energy saving.
Taking advantage of one of the last two options it will be possible to improve the performance of the battery even more limiting the clock of processor o scaling the display resolution.
La full rechargefinally, it employs about 60 minutes thanks to the supplied power supply unit. In short, a real splinter!
Il Huawei P30 Pro is a smartphone that surprises not so much for the innovation brought by the photographic sector, which already in itself represents a new standard in the sector, but for the concreteness with which the company has known improve the already excellent P20 Pro e Mate 20 Pro.
At the end of 2018 we have elected the Huawei Mate 20 Pro such as best smartphone and how smartphone with the best camera in our GizAwards but this but this P30 Pro takes a big step towards reconfirmation in 2019.
Autonomy, photography, excellent performance and completeness make this device one of the best choices (if not the best for many users) currently on the market.
Il price of departure of 999 € unfortunately follows the trends introduced in the 2018, but at least in this case corresponds to an effort of research and development profuse from Huawei in offering a smartphone that can replace and incorporate compact cameras o DSLR (obviously with the due exceptions of use, above all professional) in a single device.
The use of this title wants to be a bit of a provocation that is not so far from reality. Is the world of smartphone photography evolving so much that it reduces distances with more complex machines? We want you to answer this question because we are curious to know what you think.
In addition to 'assenza the stereo speaker, the only negative points we could analyze are related to dimensions not contained, which could force several users to tack on Huawei P30. This would correspond to a downgrade level hardware, of technical specifications and in design.
So who is it recommended for? If you were owners of Huawei Mate 20 Pro, which we still consider one of the best devices on the market, vi We advise against the purchase of the device except in the case in which we want to perform a photographic upgrade. If in the case you came from P20 Pro, instead, the photographic, performance, autonomy and connectivity innovations are certainly evident and the game would be worth the candle.
As for a direct confrontation between Huawei P30 Pro e Huawei Mate 20 Pro it is important to point out that currently the second is located between the 640 and 670 (street price) euro. Without doubt the first is more complete e innovative, But the difference about 350 € è tanta. So if you have a smaller budget you can easily go on the series Mate without too many hesitations, while if you want to buy what the market has better to offer us then we advise you to tack on the new one P30 BESS.
