The Chinese manufacturer has launched its first smartphone equipped with four cameras (two on the back and two dedicated to selfies). All this is offered with a style that is now widely tested, even if not for this less effective, especially for newcomers to the brand. But how will he behave? Redmire Xiaomi Note Pro 6 in daily use? Will it be better to prefer it to different mid-range models? Find out in our review.
Review Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro
The sales box is the classic packaging for the mid-range brand, with an orange hardback with the name of the device and the company logo in plain sight. Inside the package we find:
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro;
- wall charger from 5V 2A;
- USB / microUSB cable;
- pin for the SIM slot;
- soft silicone cover;
- English manuals.
Design and construction quality
Smartphone measures 157.9 x 76.4 x 8.26 mm for a taken of 182 g. As it is easy to guess, it is an impressive device, even if it still has a good grip and is characterized by an excellent performance when you hold it in your hand. The back cover is in aluminum with bands Plastics at the top and bottom, as well as the perimeter frame. In the center we find the lightning fingerprint reader: precise, reliable and very fast in unlocking. While in the upper left corner we have the usual dual traffic light camera.
Frontally we have the display set in the shell by a â € œgradinoâ € and equipped with a wide notch at the top. The dimensions are justified by the presence of a double selfie camera plus the sensor, the Notification LED and the ear capsule. As for the perimeter of the device, at the top we have themini-jack input, the microphone for the reduction of environmental noise and a IR sensor; opposite, microphone, entrance microUSB and a single speaker. The volume bar and Power button on the right and the Dual SIM hybrid slot on the left complete the picture.
The back design is almost like that of his predecessor: the only differences are the plastic bands, no longer straight but curved at the ends, and the ID sensor more flush and less difficult to detect. The device is well done, even in the face of the aforementioned â € œgraduateâ €, which risks turning out to be too cheap. But if we stop thinking about the Redmi Note 6 Pro for a second and think about the latest mid-range models (and not only) we can not help but wonder: when Xiaomi will abandon this proven design to propose something more original?
The display of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro is a panel LCD da 6.26 " with resolution Full HD + (2280 x 1080 pixels), report in 19: 9 and density of 403 PPI. Corning Gorilla Glass protective glass has a slight 2.5D curvature that can not be fully enjoyed due toevident step made of plastic material surrounding the display, similarly to the Pocophone F1.
Colors, especially at maximum brightness (500 nits), they are rather saturated even if the reproduction remains faithful. Overall it is a good panel, which returns vivid images albeit without excessively impressing the eye. In Settings / Display / Contrast and colors It is possible to customize some aspects but it is not anything particularly complicated.
To move the device we find the SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 636, solution octa-core to 1.8 GHz of maximum frequency, realized with a production process a 14 nm and Kryo 260 clusters. This is the same processor that we find on board the previous Redmi Note 5 and, similar to the latter, we did not find any hitch during our experience with the smartphone. Browsing between apps, screens and windows is fluid, free of any impediment.
The opening of the app, even those not present in the backgroud, is snappy. In short, the chipset offers a high level user experience, even though we are dealing with a mid-range model. Side memories we have 4 GB of RAM LPDDR4X e 64 GB XMMUM eMMC storage, expandable up to 5.1 GB via microSD.
The GPU Adreno 509 offers an impeccable gaming experience with light titles; with heavy games like Asphalt 8 e Monster Hunter Stories (the latter runs without any kind of lag) obviously the device loses some hits in terms of frame rate. Nothing excessive and it will be possible to finish your races without consequences in terms of fluidity.
On the back of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro we have an already seen dual camera from 12 + 5 mega-pixel with opening f/1.9:2.2, pixels from 1.4-1.12 μm, Dual Pixel autofocus and Dual LED flash. And in fact the module that we find on board this model follows what we saw with its predecessor. Despite the photographic software of the MIUI still appears unripe in some respects, improvements compared to the past are all seen.
The application allows you to take shots with the support ofartificial intelligence, images that are very pleasant in good lighting conditions, especially during daylight hours. The photos present a good level of detail and the colors (with some exceptions) are well reproduced and with the right shade.
In Portrait mode you can take advantage of the bokeh effect with the help of the software and the depth sensor. The outlines of the subject in the foreground are traced accurately and are present only some small smudges, located in the most difficult points. Regarding the night shots the situation changes progressively with the decline of lighting. As this diminishes, the images are made less detailed and more pasty. However, overall, most of the shots are valid for healthy social use.
The same consideration must be made regarding the dual chamber dedicated to Selfie, embedded in the notch. This module consists of a main sensor from 20 mega-pixels with opening f/2.0, 0.9 μm pixels and 4-in-1 Super Pixel technology; the secondary sensor is a module from 2 mega-pixels with opening f/2.2 and pixels from 1.75 μm.
Do not expect miracles but overall it is a good solution for the social side, especially with regard to daytime shots. There are a good number of details and the general impression is that Xiaomi has finally made center from the "selfie" point of view. But as is easily understood, the self-portraits with artificial light or at night are certainly not the best.
Finally, the photo package allows you to record videos in resolution 1080p a 30 fps. Stabilization is present at the appeal ICE CREAM, certainly not impeccable but who knows his business and is able, at least in part, to guarantee a certain stability.
Connectivity and audio quality
The X12 modem LTE Cat.13 he behaved more than worthy: we did not find any noteworthy drops in the telephone reception or during Internet browsing. The connectivity package has proven to be very reliable and includes a module Dual SIM 4G hybrid, Wi-Fi ac Dual Band e Bluetooth 5.0. Absent the NFC but in compensation - small consolation - we find the FM radio. No problem even during satellite navigation, thanks to GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS / BeiDou support. Finally, telephone conversations on attest to more excellent levels, with a clean audio and a volume that is more than enough.
We conclude with the audio part, which relies on one single speaker positioned along the bottom edge of the smartphone. Volume at the top and quality in the media, in short, a typical solution from mid-range Xiaomi (and this is certainly not a defect).
By default, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro arrives with the MIUI 9, but we have updated it to MIUI 10.0.4.0 Global Stable immediately after the first power-on and smartphone configuration. The firmware is based on Android 8.1 Oreo, with security patches updated to October 2018. Knowing Xiaomi and the long-term support offered to our devices, we are sure that from the point of view of the update there will be no nasty surprises.
Regarding the firmware itself, the MIUI 10 offers a rich experience in functionality and customization. The new" full screen gestures - that we have had the opportunity to try on multiple occasions - they are revealed as always perfect and very apt to navigate on large displays and with extended ratio. Among the settings are a whole series of features already known (and appreciated) by fans of the Chinese brand, such as:
- Second Space;
- App Clonate (to use two different accounts with the same app, like Facebook or WhatsApp);
- Shortcuts and gesture shortcuts (to enable features like screenshots with three-finger swipe downwards);
- Mi Mover (for file transfer between two devices);
- Security App (for managing all aspects of the smartphone such as battery, cache cleaning, etc.);
- Turbo Videogames.
One last note about security. The impeccable fingerprint reader can be added to the Face Unlock managed via software. Also in this case it is a solution quite fast when unlocking the device; most likely the dual front camera helps a lot in recognizing the user's face. Obviously, since it is a software only method, in the dark it will tend to lose some hits. However, taking advantage of the display lighting to the maximum, it will be possible to unlock the device even in the dark.
The battery from 4000 mAh on board the Redmi Note 6 Pro allowed us to arrive safely at the end of the day, with approx 4.5 display hours on with a medium-intense use of the device. With a slightly more parsimonious use it is possible to arrive without problems 5 hours. Results that initially disappointed us, but that are actually due to a problem with Google services, which have abnormally drained the battery. Fortunately, the situation has settled in recent days, with consumption back around 6 / 7 hours of active display. The time of recharge - using the supplied charger - settles at just over two hours.
Review Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro - Conclusions and price
Lo Redmire Xiaomi Note Pro 6 it is certainly a good range medium, which it is able to offer great performance, which may even exceed expectations for this price range. The build quality is discreet, the software is the usual MIUI to which we are accustomed and the services offered by the SoC guarantee asatisfying experience. In addition, Xiaomi has now learned its business and the photographic sector (consisting of four sensors) has proved up to expectations for this price range.
If we really want to find a defect, we could not fail to mention the standardized design which has been subjecting us to the Chinese company for a while, in addition to the present door microUSB. The Redmi Note 6 Pro is promoted but we keep our fingers crossed and we hope that the company, in addition to improving from the point of view hardware / software / photos, also points to introduce more specific designs for future models, instead of offering the usual style chopped and withdrawn.
