Since when OPPO he made his return to Italy we got to try Find X, R15 Pro ed A3. Three intriguing models that, however, for one reason or another, have not been able to fully convince, either for the price or for the software. Today we are here to talk to you about OPPO RX17 Pro, the latest in our market, a smartphone whose aesthetic has captured me from the first moment. Will he be able to convince me completely this time? Find out in our review.
OPPO RX17 Pro Review
Inside the package we find the following equipment:
- OPPO RX17 Pro;
- soft protective cover;
- Super VOOC charger;
- USB Type-C cable;
- USB Type-C headphones;
Design and construction quality
If I had to draw up a personal 10 top of the most beautiful smartphones of all time, OPPO RX17 Pro would fall in full. The motivation is soon said: it is the vaporwave phone par excellence, and I love this aesthetic strand. Rather, aesthetic. The Radiant Mist coloring (there is also that Blue Stream) offers a wonderful shade that goes from navy blue to purple, with reflections also green / yellow depending on the refraction of light. A phone yes showy (more people stopped me wondering what the phone was) but with elegance.
Despite being made of glass, the back cover has one matt finish, almost metallic, which on the one hand makes it even more fascinating, while on the other slippery. But the real touch of class we find on the metal frame above and below, where the gradient is resumed with a purely aesthetic groove.
With dimensions of 157.6 x 74.6 x 7.9 mm and a well-balanced weight of 183 g it's an "average" smartphone by current standards. It is not small but not even exaggerated and ergonomic in shape, even if the cover is recommended. And the one supplied, blue, can not completely ruin the look. Too bad for the absence of one-handed mode.
Like all the tops of the BBK colossus, for example Vivo NEX S, even on board of OPPO RX17 Pro we find a fingerprint reader in the display (with 5 unlocking animations). This can also be used to block app launches or view files in memory. The sensor has proven itself good but not great, both in terms of speed and precision. Since this is an optical sensor, you need to press a little 'with your finger, otherwise you run into missed readings.
To compensate for this there is however the 2D facial release, quick in operation. To avoid annoyance between the two methods, I advise you to disable the display wake up function when you lift the phone, then set the double tap to wake. Doing so will raise the phone light up the fingerprint, showing you where to press, or just double tap on the display or press the Power button to turn on the display and use the facial recognition.
If you are not among the lovers of the notch (exist?), The solution adopted on RX17 Pro is the best compromise today. The so-called notch to drop it is quite discreet, above all because the sinuous forms make it less invasive and more "aesthetic". Too bad, though, that the notifications continue to not be shown. However, we have a display in 19.5: 9 from 6.4 "Full HD + (2340 x 1080 pixels) with 402 PPI density and Gorilla Glass 6 protection.
In addition to having rather small frames, the technology AMOLED, in addition to allowing the presence of a sensor under the display, offers a visual quality worthy of note. High contrast, vivid colors and a point of absolute black make it a very enjoyable screen, as well as with sufficient oleophobicity. The brightness makes it easily readable even outdoors, even if the automatic sensor tends to decline. Via software it is possible to calibrate the white balance, activate the Night mode and there is no lack ofAlways-on Display (disabled), even if it only shows SMS, calls, time, date and battery.
OPPO RX17 Pro can be classified as a medium / high range model, mainly due to the presence of the Snapdragon 710 of Qualcomm. The 10 nm chipset integrates a Kryo 360 octa-core CPU to 2.2 GHz, along with 6 GB of RAM LPDDR4X e 128 GB memory, quick but not expandable. A configuration that does not disregard expectations, offering constant fluidity in the various menus and during the use of the various apps, with a few reloads in the background and a quick switch between the apps in progress.
The graphics component is managed by the GPU Adreno 616, certainly not the best performing solution but not for this not adequate, indeed. Even playing heavy titles like PUBG there are no frame drops, always around 30 / 40 fps and temperatures never above i 50°C even after several minutes of play. To help there is also Game Space, software function with which to block notifications and optimize performance.
But as usual, when it comes to OPPO, the real critical point is the software, the ColorOS 5.2 here based on Android 8.1 Oreo and with October patches. First of all, translations have been partly improved, but there is still a little bit to fix. There is however support to Project Treble, as well as alle Camera2 API and certification Widevine L1. But to split the opinion is above all the general aesthetics (you can still install alternative launchers), in addition to factors such as the absence of the drawer, full screen gestures, themes and the notch without notifications. About notifications, these arrive without problems and without having to set anything. Notification LED is missing, but you can set the display to turn on at reception.
The only real difference I found compared to Find X is the elimination of the Full Screen Multitasking in favor of the smart sidebar. The operation is almost the same but can also be used with the screen vertically. With a swipe from top to the right opens this curtain with various shortcuts: camera, explore files, screenshots, Do Not Disturb mode and app of your choice. The most suitable are SMS, Messenger and WhatsApp, as they can be opened in floating mode on top of other apps running.
With a swipe to the right from the home you access theIntelligent Assistant (Google Now is not settable), a screen that collects more or less useful shortcuts, including favorite contacts, weather, pedometer and photos. The most useful is instead the Clone App, with which to have two instances of Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Telegram and WhatsApp.
Photo / video quality
The approach adopted for the triple camera OPPO RX17 Pro is considered unique compared to brands such as Huawei, Samsung or LG. Instead of adding another optic, the third sensor is defined TOF (Time of Flight). Basically it is a sensor used only for 3D scanning, thus being able to recreate models of immortalized subjects, measurements, augmented reality applications and so on. Too bad that, at present, the sensor is not enabled, since the 3D shooting mode will be added at the end of the year, according to OPPO Italia.
Not really a happy move, as launching a castrated phone is never a good idea. However, the rest of the sector should not be underestimated, on the contrary. We have a Sony IMX362 main sensor from 12 mega-pixels from 1 / 2.55 ", pixels from 1.4 variable mechanical aperture f/ 1.5-2.4, as seen with Galaxy S9. However, here the change of focus is automatic and can not be managed manually. The secondary one is instead a 20 mega-pixels with opening f/ 2.6, used to have one zoom 2x and the mode HD Portrait.
If you've already read my other reviews, you'll know that I'm pretty picky when it comes to smartphone photography. This is because the bar has been raised so much that, frankly speaking, all the phones can take "beautiful pictures", but the details make the difference. That said, OPPO RX17 Pro is precisely a smartphone that take beautiful pictures, perhaps more at night than during the day, in proportion.
During the daytime the details captured are many, with well balanced colors and never exaggerated. What still does not convince me of OPPO is the exposure management, because with difficult lights there is a certain tendency to overexpose. Factor compensable by the HDR, whose Auto mode does not always intervene when it should and, when it does, the effect is not the best, with an increase in overall brightness and not in zones. Not missing the recognition of the scene (can be disabled) but the differences are not so obvious. The manual mode allows you to act on the following parameters: white balance, exposure value and time, ISO and focus. But no RAW photos with the default app.
But as I told you, the phone has satisfied me most at night, thanks to one Ultra Night mode really effective. We are not yet at the levels of Google's Night Sight, but the result obtained by OPPO is still convincing. Thanks to the help ofOIS, the shot takes about 2 seconds and manages to take particularly dark photos and make them much more impact, with better exposure, color liveliness and even a more marked level of detail.
The selfie camera from 25 mega-pixels with opening f/ 2.0 guarantees good shots, although, compared to its predecessor, there is the excellent Sensor-HDR technology capable of shooting in HDR even in Portrait mode. The latter should quite well chop off the subject and guarantees good results even in the evening and with bokeh effect activated.
Videos can be shot in 4K e Full HD a 30 fps (60 fps are missing), in addition to Slow-motion (unspecified fps). The captured clips have very pleasant colors, with well-defined edges and one general quality more than enough even at night. Stabilization OIS manages to compensate for most of the movements, although some vibration is visible.
Connectivity and audio
OPPO RX17 Pro integrates the support dual SIM 4G + and offers very good coverage, both for calls and for data browsing. Very well also the Wi-Fi ac Dual Band, even if the switch between Wi-Fi and 4G is not very fast. Then there is the Bluetooth 5.0 and also theNFC for payments with Google Pay, as well as Wi-Fi Direct and DLNA. To report that, although there is a door USB Type-C 3.1, it is not possible to mirror to external monitors.
Although the capsule is small, the quality in call is more than adequate, as well as the microphone. The mini-jack input (as well as the FM radio) is missing, while the lower mono speaker it has a good volume and an average frequency management. There is also an equalizer for audio with wired headphones.
Inside the OPPO RX17 Pro we find a large battery from 3700 mAh, able to withstand a day of continuous use without major problems. Unfortunately, the software does not give us the opportunity to know the display hours, even using app like GSAM, but I'm still satisfied with the longevity of the battery.
Actually it would be more correct to talk about it in the plural, since they are two 1850 mAh batteries each. This conformation is necessary to exploit the portentosa Super VOOC, the fastest recharge that there is at present. We advise you to see the test compared with other top of the range, and even RX17 Pro has kept its promises, putting us alone 35 minutes to get from 0% to 100%. Absent, however, the wireless charging.
Conclusions and price
Compared to R15 Pro, this OPPO RX17 Pro is undoubtedly a smartphone more competitive which manages to stand out from the crowd thanks to a particular and fascinating aesthetic and a noteworthy technical sector. The "problem" when it comes to OPPO is basically one: the price.
The smartphone is sold in MediaWorld stores at a price of 599 € for cutting from 6 / 128 GB, a figure more congruous than R15 Pro but that, willy-nilly, puts it in competition with a little 'all the top of the range that, although in store cost more, have a lower street price advantage. Without considering a polarizing software like aesthetics, which still needs improvement and that is not known for how much will be supported.
