In the past few years we have seen the series take on more and more importance I Max di Xiaomi. This is because it goes to cover one niche, that of the phablet, which is often ignored by many producers. I know the term nowadays phablet has been exceeded, as average smartphones are increasing more and more the diagonal of the display, but the category of the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 it is the one that most belongs to this definition.
How did this smartphone behave during the various tests? Let's not lose ourselves in further talk and let's find out in our full review!
Xiaomi Mi Max 3 review
Classic sales box in white hardcover in full Xiaomi style. Inside we find the following equipment:
- Xiaomi Mi Max 3;
- wall power supply with Chinese plug and 5V output = 3A / 9V = 2A / 12 = 1.5A;
- USB data transfer cable - USB Type-C;
- instruction manual;
- pin for the SIM slot.
Construction and design
Despite the design be pleasant, this does not differ much from many smartphone companies already present in the mid-range. In fact, we always have a back cover in it satin aluminum and a camera placed vertically. In this case, however, we find plastic bands to encourage the reception of antennas that recall the trend of smartphones a few months / year ago (iPhone style to be clear). I tend to point out that the latter do not bother me at all, in fact I have always liked this touch of style.
Compared to other devices in the series I Max, the new phablet of the Chinese house presents of the dimensions and frames more optimized. In fact, the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has the following measures: 176.2 x 87.4 x 8 millimeters for a well-distributed weight of 221 grams.
Without a doubt this is not a handy smartphone to use with one hand or even to take with you in your pocket since it is a lot cumbersome even when you sit down. However, this aspect can not be considered a defect because the device is designed specifically for a specific purpose and for people who feel the need to have a large display.
For the rest we are faced with a well-made smartphone, impact-resistant and solid when subjected to bending.
On the rear there is a dual camera with dual LED flash and fingerprint sensor, unlike the front profile on which we find the camera for selfies, the sensor of brightness and proximity, the LED notification and the capsule.
Below are the USB Type-C input, the main microphone and the system speaker, while on the top there are the mini jack input, the microphone useful for the reduction of ambient noise and the infrared sensor. For the rest classic configuration on the sides with power button and volume rocker on the right and dual SIM / SIM + microSD slot on the left.
Lo Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has a display IPS da 6.9 inches diagonal with resolution Full HD + (2160 x 1080 pixels), density of PPI 350 and format 18:9.
The advantage of this smartphone is just the large panel, which allows us to fully enjoy the multimedia content e videogame such as movies, videos on YouTube or endless games in PUBG. For this purpose it is absolutely perfect ed unbeatableMoreover, the colors are represented fairly faithfully. Good finally the minimum and maximum brightness and the viewing angles.
Like all devices with MIUI in the settings we find the possibility of calibrate the contrast and colors at will, as well as the possibility to activate the reading mode.
Hardware and Performance
Under the shell we find the rodatissimo Qualcomm Snapdragon 636, which is inclusive of a processor octa-core da 1.8 GHz, a GPU Adreno 509, 4 GB di RAM e 64 GB di internal memory expandable via microSD to 256 GB.
From the point of view of the performance I have not encountered great problems because the smartphone is Quick e reactive as always. By now we know this chipset very well and we know how far it can go, also guaranteeing very good gaming performance.
Unfortunately in everyday use it happens that there are some freeze, but this is a problem attributable to software and later we will talk more in detail.
For the rest here later I leave the various benchmark test carried out during these weeks of use.
Posteriorly we find one dual chamber with sensors from 12 + 5 mega-pixel with opening f / 1.9 e dual flash LED.
The shots are adapted to the smartphones of the mid-range of XiaomiIn short, good for the price to which you can buy the smartphone. In fact, we have one during the day good color fidelity and a good white balance, besides being present a Automatic HDR which always intervenes properly. Also good definition in conditions of favorable brightness, which shows the grain only with an extreme zoom.
In night the subject changes, as we should have one very firm hand not to make the photos move. The noise increasesobviously, and the definition goes away. In short, from this point of view, the smartphone reflects the standard of its price range.
On the front there is a sensor from 8 mega-pixels with opening f / 2.0 that behaves the same way. In this case i colors I am more extinguished (slightly) compared to the rear camera and we always have the same software Xiaomi which sets a kind of base beauty filter which helps to plan the face from any small wrinkles. In the evening quality gets worse and we can not get particularly satisfactory results. However, I would like to clarify again that the performances perfectly reflect its price range.
The audio output from the lower speaker is powerful and with a fair balance of frequencies, maybe a little sin in the bassi but overall I would like to promote this aspect, especially fundamental to exploit in the best way the large display (gaming and film viewing).
In the headphones the situation improves further and, finally, the audio in the ear capsule is crystal clear and also the one captured by the microphone is good.
Unfortunately this it is not the strong point the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 and it is necessary to accurately specify why. The ROM mounted on the device is one MIUI Global 9.6 (18.104.22.168 stable) which is not really one Global official, but a version installed by the various stores for sale in Italy o Europe. Unfortunately we found some problems with this software, including the receptionwhich is below average. Not so much for calls, as for the data network. The same goes for the modem too Wi-Fi Dual Band which also seemed a bit weak.
For the rest I have not encountered problems with the Bluetooth 5.0 and GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS / Beidu. There is also the FM radio and infrared sensor.
As already mentioned above, on board we find the MIUI 9.6 Global (Stable 9.6.4) which would seem to be one fake variant, since a few days ago was released official version, Or the Stable 9.6.6.
With this we have encountered some problems on the front of the fluidity of the smartphone, as sometimes it happens that the app suffer a freeze a few seconds that will force us to close them forcibly. What's more, this ROM causes reception problems, in addition to the fact that we will not be able to download Netflix directly from Play Store, but we should do it through apk.
Currently many devices on the market are found with this version of the software, so we wanted to take this test for you inform you on what they are really the performance of the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 without the official Global. There will be a new test in the future with the official variant, hoping that all these problems have been solved.
For the rest we find the classic software of Xiaomi with all the various customizations of the case that have made of the MIUI one of the most complete interfaces on the market. We talk about the cloning of the app, the second space, the calibration of colors to your liking, gestures and much more.
Under the body of the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 we find a battery from 5500 mAh, which allows us to obtain incredible autonomy. In fact, it is possible to reach easily 2 days of autonomy with peaks of 10 hours of active screen. To achieve all this, at least you need to do a little 'running in the device.
Full charging takes place in poco less than two hours using the supplied wall power supply.
Lo Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is a smartphone that refers to a specific audience and is certainly not suitable for all due to the size. For the price to which it is sold is certainly a good product to be used at home or on the go even for the fruition di multimedia content or for Gaming.
However, with the ROM present on board we have found different problems that have affected the final evaluations. For the moment we feel like rimandare this We are Max 3 waiting to install the MIUI Global official with which we will be able to give you a complete final evaluation.
What we can tell you right now is that you can find this smartphone on LightInTheBox about 233 euro, for an price deserve it very honest for its potential.
