In recent weeks we have had the opportunity to try the new top of the company's range Lei Jun, Or the Xiaomi Mi 8. Since there was not yet a variant for the European market we have tested its potential with the ROM China, which, however, turned out to be still slightly sour and with small flaws that should be filed to do justice to this excellent flagship.
For this reason, before giving a final judgment, we wanted to wait for the official marketing in Italy of the new Xiaomi Mi 8 Global, hoping for a software optimized for all the new features introduced (notch on all). Will this smartphone be able to improve significantly compared to its Chinese counterpart? Let's find out together in our review!
Xiaomi Mi 8 Global Review
The sales package is slightly smaller than that of the Chinese variant, but the equipment inside it does not change:
- Xiaomi Mi 8;
- wall power supply with European plug and 3.0 Quick Charge support;
- USB data transfer cable - USB Type-C;
- pin for the SIM slot;
- USB Type-C adapter - mini jack;
- instruction manual;
- silicone cover.
Design and construction
Needless to say, under this point of view nothing has changed (as for the rest, software aside). The construction is very much solid e resistantin fact, during the various days of use I found no signs of wear.
Posteriorly we find a back cover in glass with a discrete oleophobic treatment, while the perimeter frame is made of aluminum. Despite the materials used and the generous size, the phone remains firmly in the hand and does not appear to be slippery as for example one Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S. However, it is not a very handy smartphone to use with one hand, as it has the dimensions of 154.9 x 74.8 x 7.6 mm for a weight of 175 g.
Il design it's perhaps the most appearance criticized of this device, as it is completely inspired by the top of the company's range CupertinoOr l 'iPhone X. The similarities are obvious, starting from the ample notch located on the front profile, up to the vertical camera located on the back cover. In short, from this point of view we expected something more original from Xiaomi, since in the past it has also created fascinating and noteworthy devices (ex. Xiaomi Mi MIX).
Below we find the USB Type-C input, the system speaker and the main microphone flanked by the microphone useful for the reduction of environmental noise that, instead, is placed on the upper profile. On the right side there is the volume rocker and the power button, unlike the left one where the Dual Nano SIM slot resides (you can not expand the internal memory via MicroSD).
Frontally we find the notch that integrates the IR sensor for the facial release, the camera for selfies, the capsule and the sensor of brightness and proximity, while on the back cover is the dual camera with dual LED flash and the fingerprint sensor digital, which is quick and precise. We can state that 10 times on 10 the device is successfully unlocked.
Lo Xiaomi Mi 8 can boast of a magnificent unity Super AMOLED da 6.21 inches diagonal with resolution Full HD + (2160 x 1080 pixels), relationship 19.5:9, density of PPI 402 and protection Corning Gorilla Glass.
The quality of this panel is high, the colors are vivid, but never too saturated and characterized by gods deep blacks, although the whites tend slightly to the yellow (all in the standard since we are talking about an AMOLED unit). The viewing angles are very good and the brightness sensor behaves very well.
A detail that should not be underestimated is the presence of the function Always-On which allows us to display the date and time, as well as application notifications, which however will not take us to the relevant app once we click on the icon.
The only negative part of the display concerns the presence of a notch so wide, as this will not allow us to view the percentage of the battery, icon of the notifications, the Bluetooth of GPS and so on. Unfortunately it will be necessary to lower the curtain of the quick toggle to be able to view all these details.
Hardware and Performance
Under the shell we find a chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 including a processor octa-core with a maximum clock frequency of 2.8 GHz, a GPU Adreno 630, 6 GB di RAM LPDDR4X, 64 GB di internal memory UFS 2.1 not expandable via microSD.
The performances are excellent and compared to the Chinese variant nothing changes in terms of speed and power, if not a slightly higher stability provided by the software. Furthermore, comparing the benchmarking made between the two it is possible to notice the differences, as the Xiaomi Mi 8 with ROM China it would seem to get better results.
Needless to say, the GPU behaves excellently even with heavier titles like PUBG o Asphalt 9.
This Xiaomi Mi 8 has a dual rear camera with a sensor from 12 mega-pixels with aperture f / 1.8 and dimensions of 1 / 2.55 " and another telescopic sensor from 12 mega-pixels with opening f / 2.4 and dimensions of 1 / 3.4 ", both accompanied by a dual Flash LED.
As mentioned also in the review of the Chinese variant and in comparison with the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S, the quality of the shots obtained with this camera is excellent, but we are not yet at the levels of the sacred monsters in this sector such as Huawei P20 Pro o Samsung Galaxy S9 +.
Thanks to'AI, often the photos are optimized properly based on the scene, but in the evening can not do wonders because of the details not at the top, albeit with beautiful colors.
In conditions of good brightness we have some very detailed photos, a incisive bokeh and colors worthy of note. Quality automatic management of theHDR that manages to intervene always at the right time.
As for the other features, the Portrait mode still can not convince me full view of the effect too artificial (sometimes it is not too precise), while the zoom 2X appears to be pleasant in good light conditions.
Di will be the quality drops and it shows. Although the shots are still sufficient, the camera can not guarantee us the performance like the most expensive top of the range. In fact, while the colors are represented fairly faithfully even with poor lighting, the definition does not excel and digital noise is visible.
Frontally we have a sensor from 20 mega-pixels with opening f / 2.0 which reflects practically the characteristics mentioned above: beautiful photos in the daytime, but that go a bit 'in crisis at night with little brightness, because if we are well lit the results are not bad at all.
Very good video recording thanks to the optical stabilizer at 4 axes. We can record up to the maximum resolution 4K a 30 FPS.
In conclusion, we find no differences in quality compared to the Chinese variant.
Audio and connectivity
The audio output from the lower speaker is powerful and of good quality thanks to a balanced balance of frequencies. The same goes for the audio in headphones that is pleasant and without any criticality in absolute.
La reception it is good and there are no differences with the Chinese variant since both present the support to the 20 band. Furthermore, the presence of the Dual 4G it is a plus not from poco.
For the rest we find the Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, e Dual-frequency GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS for greater precision in satellite navigation. Furthermore, inside the notch there is also a infrared emitter is preferably used for 2D scan of the face, which was not present until a few days ago inside the MIUI 9.6, but that has recently arrived thanks to a new update. The latter is definitely Quick e accurate, even low light situations.
Here we are at the most significant part of this review, or the software, as it is the aspect that differs the Chinese variant from that Overseas hubs. In fact, in the first review we tested the smartphone with MIUI 9.5 Stable (Chinese)while this one Xiaomi Mi 8 it is always based on Android 8.1 OreoBut with MIUI 9.6 Global (Stable 126.96.36.199).
The reasons why this device made us remain dissatisfied were different, among these we remember the not receiving notifications which forced us to block the relevant apps in multitasking. This aspect, of course, was solved, but there are still others that we will analyze together.
- The various bugs, o forced closures in the switch between various applications are no longer present;
- La one hand mode (can not be activated if we use gestures rather than on-screen keys) it still tends to emulate un notch in a virtual way. Very special choice e poco apt.
- Inability to view the notifications in the upper status bar, as well as the percentage of the battery, the status of the GPS, the Bluetooth and so on. To do this it will be necessary to lower the notification curtain.
- There is still a thin line of just a few millimeters between the notch and the "beginning" of the application. We talk about the lack of optimization in scaling the app.
For the rest, most of the aspects reported in the previous review were resolved. We also point out that a few days ago, the update that introduced it has arrived facial unblock, which turned out to be very precise e fast.
In general, we always find a software very complete e bug freein fact, during these days of use, we did not find any jeopardizing. We also remember that you can use them gestures to move within the interface, instead of the classic on-screen keys.
Finally, it is important to state that there are no themes, while you can see the following features:
- Second Space to separate the work space from the private one;
- gestures to remove the on-screen keys;
- Notch: the notch can be hidden via software to have a more uniform display
- We Cloud: synchronization in Cloud of contacts and photos;
- App Clone which allows you to duplicate two applications to use for example two accounts WhatsApp o WeChat on the same device;
- App Block to lock with password the opening of specific applications;
- Quick Ball to navigate within the interface via a floating button;
- Security Center which includes all customizations for the management of privacy, battery and performance with different to be able to set.
Lo Xiaomi Mi 8 owns a battery from 3400 mAh, which can guarantee us one very good autonomy. In fact, I managed to total up to 6 hours of active screen with average use, while with intense use I arrived until about 4 hours and minutes 45.
As for charging, this takes place in approx 1 20 hours and minutes through the supplied power adapter (Quick Charge 3.0). Too bad that there is not a charger with Quick Charge 4.0, as it is Xiaomi Mi 8 supports this new technology.
In conclusion this Xiaomi Mi 8 it is confirmed to be still one good product Thanks to a great display, A 'excellent autonomy and a good camera. The performances are obviously level, but the software it is not yet completely perfect because of the innovations introduced for the notch, although several aspects have been improved. In short, if you want to buy the latest top of the Chinese company, the most sensible choice remains to buy it in the Global variant, but if you were undecided between this and the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S, then we advise you to read the comparison made a few days ago.
Lo Xiaomi Mi 8 is officially sold in Italy in the variant 6 / 64 GB a 529 € but on our channel Telegram GizDeals you can find offers to buy it also at 335 €.
