Not too far from the launch of the range devices redmi 5, in addition to the new range redmi 6, the Chinese manufacturer kicked off a new family of mid-range smartphones. This is the Redmi S series, whose progenitor is represented by the Xiaomi Redmi S2, a device officially landed also in Italy. In such a wide and so full of mid-range devices from the Chinese brand, a question can arise spontaneously: does this umpteenth model make any sense? Let's find out together in ours review.
Review Xiaomi Redmi S2
The package offers the following equipment:
- Xiaomi Redmi S2;
- wall charger 5V 2A;
- USB / micro USB cable;
- soft silicone cover;
- pin for the SIM slot;
Design and construction quality
Like the vast majority of the company's devices, even the Xiaomi Redmi S2 it is not an exception to the rule. The device is well built, showing no sign or crunch and offering one good ergonomics. The back cover is completely made of polycarbonate, with the usual inserts for receiving the antennas with a new style and visually appeasing.
The rear design features a dual traffic light camera with the fingerprint reader digital, really reliable and fast, placed at the center of the body. In short, while the quality of construction is to be appreciated, on the other it is clear that originality is scarce. The dimensions are of 160.73 x 77.26 x 8.1 mm for a weight of 170 g.
On the underside we see the microUSB port, along with the main speaker and microphone. On the upper one, however, we have the mini-jack input, the IR sensor and the secondary microphone. On the right side there are the Power button and the volume rocker, while on the left the dual SIM + microSD slot. On the front, above the large panel in 18: 9, the notification LED, the selfie camera with LED flash, the earpiece and the sensors are positioned.
Lo Xiaomi Redmi S2 has an LCD display from 5.99 inches with resolution only HD + (1440 x 720 pixels), report in 18:9 and density of PPI 269. All around the panel, instead of a 2.5D curvature, we find a plastic step. A decidedly much cheaper solution that represents the most cheap element of design.
In spite of this last consideration, the display that we find on board the smartphone looks like a good solution, with bright colors and mostly faithful. The defects are the same of any LCD panel, with whites tending to the azure (a very light phenomenon in this case) and blacks never really intense. Settings can be used to adjust the contrast level and display colors using presets.
Under the body of this Xiaomi Redmi S2 is a Qualcomm processor Snapdragon 625, to 147 nm and with CPU octa-core Cortex-A53 up to 2.0 GHz. It is a reliable solution but also "abused", since it is implemented on multiple models. The picture is completed 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB internal memory (about 22 GB available), expandable up to 256 GB via microSD.
The terms of performance we are facing a device average, with some slight decline on certain occasions. Occasionally there are small lag and slowdowns but never anything that compromises the user experience.
The GPU Adreno 506 650 MHz allows you to play both casual games and more complex titles: in the latter case a drop in the frame rate is to be considered even if with Asphalt 8 we did not find any real problems during the game phases. Portal Knight on the other hand, it represents a perfect parabola of the capabilities of the device: setting the graphics to the minimum you can enjoy the title in a fluid way, while already in average quality you can see a certain heaviness.
The photographic section of the smartphone offers us a dual camera 12 + 5 mega-pixel with opening f/2.2, PDAF autofocus and LED flash. The secondary sensor is used to take pictures in Portrait mode, with discreet results but with a level of non-impeccable detail. The shots made during the day, in optimal light conditions, are discreet and acceptable for unpretentious social use. All this, of course, paying attention to some phenomena of overexposure (as can also be seen in the various samples), since the HDR mode does not intervene incisively.
On the front we find a selfie camera from 16 mega-pixels with opening f/2.0, wide-angle lens from 79.8 ° e flash LED. The manufacturer's attention to this aspect is clear: in addition to the dedicated flash, there is also theAuto-HDR and you can activate the Portrait mode, which will apply the bokeh effect to the selfie in real time using AI-based features. The rendering of the details is average, while the bokeh is much less precise than the dual main camera (in this case we are obviously faced with a hardware limitation).
Videos can be recorded up in Full HD a 30 fps, as well as in Slow Motion in 720p to 120 fps. The immortalized clips enjoy one good EIS stabilization, able to return rather fluid images. On the other hand, there is a lack of detail, also due to the contrast not really contained and a management of lights that are not at the top.
Connectivity and audio quality
The Xiaomi Redmi S2 is equipped with a module Dual SIM + microSD, thus being able to simultaneously insert two SIM cards and an expansion card, without having to sacrifice anything. As for the reception it has proven itself appropriate both as speed and as coverage. The audio in call is clean and the maximum volume allows you to clearly hear the other party.
The connectivity package offers Wi-Fi b / g / n Mono Band, slightly subdued as speed, Bluetooth 4.2 and FM Radio. To signal theassenza dell 'NFC. Navigation with GPS / GLONASS / BeiDou and compass is stable and precise enough. The audio part relies on a mono speaker down below. The audio output is valid, with a good volume, but is not able to offer anything more. Improve the situation regarding mini-jack input, with cleaner frequencies.
The software on the smartphone is the well-known interface MIUI 9.5 Global, Based on Android 8.1 Oreo and with security patches updated in May 2018. Despite the small performance-related defects, the software is stable and reliable, with totally freeze freeze and various features and customizations.
We remind you that the Face Unlock it can be enabled by inserting Hong Kong by setting "Hong Kong" in Settings, Additional settings, Region. This done, even if it proves to be unusable in excessively dark conditions, during the day and in well-lit environments reliable though a bit slow in the unlock.
The device has default le full screen gestures. These replace the navigation bar, offering the opportunity to take full advantage of the large display. The rest of the features include:
- Security Manager: a software dedicated to system optimizations, with the Cleaner, the Game Mode and so on;
- Clone App: to have two accounts with the same application;
- Second Space: creates a separate space on the phone, with its own files and applications;
- One-hand mode;
- Application Block: to set a password (or use the fingerprint reader) to access certain apps;
- Quick Ball for browsing;
- Shortcuts and gestures, like the screenshot by performing a three-finger swipe.
The battery is a unit from 3080 mAh with recharge from 5V 2A. Unfortunately, in terms of autonomy, the smartphone did not give the desired results. With an average use of the same it is able to return a little more than 4 display hours on, compared to one full recharge with a timing of around 2 hours. We would have expected something more on this front but despite this we can easily get to the end of the day.
Review Xiaomi Redmi S2 - Price and conclusions
Sum up with a device like this Xiaomi Redmi S2 it is not as easy as it seems. The smartphone is offered at the selling price of 179.90€ in the dedicated channels (and in the Mi Stores) and it is impossible not to take this factor into account. At this price, smartphones are available above the model in question, also remaining within the same Xiaomi.
Overall, this is a medium-low-end model, characterized by a design already seen and made with cheap materials. At least the design was a bit 'different compared to other models of the Chinese brand. Yet, both in terms of performance and photographic industry, the Xiaomi Redmi S2 looks like a smartphone enough and nothing more. Even on the autonomy - especially with a chipset of the genre and a display "only" HD - it seemed subdued.
