In an industry that in the last few months has seen a sales decline and a pre-eminence from Apple with its iPad there is someone who does not stop believing and who tries to contrast the products of the US brand. We are talking about Huawei that on the occasion of Mobile World Congress 2018 di Barcelona he launched his new one line-up di high-end tablet, or the Huawei MediaPad M5 ed M5 Pro, which are then divided into different versions that we will see later.
In these weeks I have had the opportunity to try the normal variant intensely and in this review I will tell you how it behaved in our tests.
Huawei MediaPad M5 Review
The sales package is made of white hardcover and has a very simple appearance. Inside the following equipment is present:
- Huawei MediaPad M5;
- wall power supply with support for Huawei SuperCharge;
- USB data transfer cable - USB Type-C;
- USB Type-C adapter - mini jack;
- pin for the SIM slot - microSD;
- instruction manual.
Design and construction
Il Huawei MediaPad M5 is a tablet made with one meticulous care in detail, in fact, the construction è solid, compact and resistant. The design then it's really a lot elegance thanks to a back cover space gray slightly rounded and in satinized aluminum.
On the back we can see the plastic bands useful to facilitate the reception on which two gods are positioned four speakers present on board the tablet. Let's not forget the main camera, the other two speakers and three magnetic pins that allow us to connect the device to the dedicated keyboard produced by Huawei and sold separately.
On the right side is the volume rocker, the power button, the SIM - microSD slot and the USB Type-C input which, unfortunately, is not equipped with the 3.0 standard useful for video output. All other side profiles, on the other hand, do not have inputs or buttons.
Frontally we find the camera for selfies and the Home key that also integrates the fingerprint sensor. The latter is a lot accurate e Quick in the unlock and can also replace the softkeys as it supports the gestures that will allow us to move freely within the interface. Regarding the security of our data, we can safely state that the release is successful 10 times on 10.
The only aspect that he did not convince me of aesthetics is precisely the close position between the volume rocker, the power button and the Home key. In fact, although it is very convenient if you use the tablet horizontally, it is definitely uncomfortable when you use it in a vertical position, especially if you have to adjust the volume or make a screenshot.
Finally, the dimensions are of 258.7 x 171.8 x 7.3 millimeters for a weight of 498 grams.
Il Huawei MediaPad M5 It is equipped with a panel IPS da 10.8 inches diagonal with resolution 2560 1600 pixels x and a density of PPI 280.
La quality of the display is very good in comparison to the other IPS, i colors they are faithfully represented and thanks to the resolution 2K we are able to fully enjoy its potential from the point of view of multimedia.
If you are not satisfied with the color rendering you can always change the color settings through the appropriate function present in the EMUI settings. Always using the same menu we can activate the reading mode and the mode "Smart resolution", which will automatically reduce the display resolution to guarantee greater energy savings.
Good viewing angles, while it could have done a little more about the oleophobic treatment.
Hardware and Performance
At this point it is important to start making differentiations about the available variants, because the Huawei MediaPad M5 da 10.8 inches It is available both in the standard variant that the one Pro which are also divided into variants that only have connectivity Wi-Fi and those that have both Wi-Fi that LTE.
As regards'Italy the situation should be rather simple as we find:
- Huawei MediaPad M5 from 8.4 inch, Wi-Fi + LTE, HiSilicon Kirin 960, 4 + 32 GB;
- Huawei MediaPad M5 from 10.8 inch, Wi-Fi only, HiSilicon Kirin 960s, 4 + 32 GB;
- Huawei MediaPad M5 Pro from 10.8 inch, Wi-Fi + LTE, HiSilicon Kirin 960, 4 + 64 GB and support for Huawei M-Pen.
However, our version is dedicated to printing and it is more precisely this: Huawei MediaPad M5 CMR - AL09, that is the standard one but with a form LTE e 64 GB di internal memory.
That said, this tablet is powered by a chipset produced in-house by the company, or theHiSilicon Kirin 960s, including a processor octa-core with a maximum clock frequency of 2.1 GHz so structured 4 × A73 (2,1 GHz) + 4 × A53 (1,8 GHz), a GPU Mali-G71 MP8, 4 GB di RAM LPDDR4 e 64 GB di internal memory expandable via microSD.
Le performance I'm buone and we can also perform the most complex operations without too many hitches and without the device overheating. In fact, in phases in which the processor has to work more intensely, we will have only a slight lukewarmness at the height of the camera. However, sometimes it is possible to notice gods small lag in the interface, but this problem is attributable to software.
La GPU it behaves well and we manage to play without problems and with a good resolution to titles like Asphalt 8 o PUGB Mobile.
As you know, in this sector the cameras are certainly not up to the best smartphones in circulation, indeed, very often they are closer to the mid range, but nothing more. In many respects it is an understandable choice, also because I challenge anyone to go on vacation with a device almost 11 inches to photograph monuments and sunsets. However, the Huawei MediaPad M5 does not totally disregard this field because, to be a tablet, does not behave badly.
Posteriorly we have a camera from 13 mega-pixels with opening f / 2.2 ed autofocus, which guarantees us good shots in conditions of favorable brightness, characterized by a discreet detail and with good colors, even if in some situations they are slightly contrasted.
In the evening and in low light conditions the quality drops and the background noise increases significantly, but we did not expect otherwise.
Frontally we find a camera from 8 mega-pixels with opening f / 2.2. Also in this case the shots obtained are good with good lighting even if at night the detail decreases.
As I said before, we are talking about a tablet, so despite everything general quality è good and sufficient above all if we use the device for the productivity, so to send photos of documents, notes, as well as for video calls su Skype and so on.
I video they can be registered up to a maximum resolution of 4K, but it is also available in Full HD 60 fps, Over which 30 fps. The results have been satisfactory thanks to good colors and good quality, even if the focus is not very fast.
Now we come to a sector that has left me completely satisfied. Indeed, for this Huawei MediaPad M5 the company has established a collaboration with Harman Kardon to guarantee us sound at the highest levels. So it was, in fact, because we find a Hi-Fi DAC AK4376 with support to active noise cancellation in headphones and support Hi-Res which assures us the absence of loss of quality with earphones Bluetooth.
The speaker I'm four, guarantee a immersive stereo effect and have one quality and a volume uncommon. The frequencies are faithfully represented, especially the basses have convinced me a lot. Finally, if at most, the volume can guarantee us one incredible power, much better than many low-cost laptops.
Unfortunately there is no mini jack input, but in the sales package we find a USB Type-C adapter. The audio is equally good and clean in the headphones.
Il Huawei MediaPad M5 owns one SIM slot with support for connectivity LTE Cat.6, as well as the Wi-Fi a / b / g / n / ac Dual Band, Bluetooth 4.2 with EDR ed aptX, GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS and the sensors of brightness, proximity, compass and gyroscope, which is available only on the cellular variant.
We have not encountered any particular problems in this respect as the connectivity sector is far beyond sufficiency. Support for networks LTE allows us to take the tablet with us on the road and continue to work safely without any problem. Furthermore, it is possible either receive and make calls thanks to integrated microphone and through the speakerphone or with earphones.
Il software it's always a bit 'a problem on Android tablet because very often it turns out to be an enlargement of the smartphone interface and therefore not an ad hoc optimization for different devices.
The attempt to Huawei and in any case good because on board we find Android 8.0 Oreo with EMUI 8.0, security patches updated to February 5 2018 and a sufficiently optimized system. Unfortunately, some Micro-lag in animations it is present, as it is also present in the Desktop mode. Yeah, because just like the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, also here we have this mode that can be activated through the curtains of the quick toggle or by attacking the keyboard Huawei to the lower 3 pins.
In this case it almost seems to have a 2 in 1 and productivity is improved however, not all apps are optimized for this type of use and it is possible to incur some lag o slight impaction too much.
In general, however, the device behaves well and those small imperfections do not seriously affect daily use.
Under the body of the Huawei MediaPad M5 we find a battery from 7500 mAh that guarantees us one good autonomy. Indeed, with intense use (a mix between mirroring on TV, Netflix, gaming and Social Network) can be obtained on average two days of autonomy with approximately 7h30 / 8h di active screen. Using it less we can also get to 4 5-days since the stand-by consumption is very low.
Thanks to the support of the quick charging Huawei SuperCharge it will be possible to fully charge the tablet in approx 2 hours and minutes 45.
In conclusion the Huawei MediaPad M5 is definitely a ottimo prodotto under the point of view of the multimedia and productivity Thanks to a awesome sound, an good display and the possibility of activating the desktop mode to turn it into a 2 in 1. However, there are some small aspects of the software that would go filed to make it truly an unbeatable product. Yes, because within this price range it is going to collide with the new iPad from 9.7 inches.
As regards the price it is important to make a subdivision based on the versions:
- Huawei MediaPad M5 8.4 inches (Wi-Fi + LTE): 399 € of price list, but available already at 329 €;
- Huawei MediaPad M5 10.8 pollici (32 GB and Wi-Fi only): 399 € of price list, but available already at 312 €;
- Huawei MediaPad M5 10.8 inches (32 GB and Wi-Fi + LTE): 449 € list price, available already at 407 €;
- Huawei MediaPad M5 Pro 10.8 inch (64 GB and Wi-Fi + LTE): 549 € list price, available already at 517 €.
In conclusion it is not a very low price, but it could be one of the few valid alternatives within the panorama Android that manages to counter the US brand.
