More than in the high end, it's in that mid-range and Xiaomi seems to have a twist more than the competition. After having proposed us more than convincing devices for their price like We are A1 e Redmi 5 Plus, this Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 (Pro) he wants to raise the bar. And he wants to do it with a Snapdragon 636 and a dual camera that promises excellent results. Will it be successful? Discover it in ours review.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Review (Pro)
Inside the package we find the following equipment:
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 5;
- Asian 5V 2A charger;
- USB / microUSB cable;
- protective cover in soft silicone;
- pin for the SIM slot;
Design and construction quality
The general aesthetics of the Xiaomi Note 5 Redmire it does not surprise or disappoint. The similarities with iPhone X they are there and it is quite clear, but only in the arrangement of the photographic form. For the rest, in reality, we are dealing with a product rather similar to the aforementioned Redmi 5 Plus.
La metal shell presents at the rear of the plastic bands for the antennas, as well as the curvatures to encourage grip. With dimensions of 158.6 x 75.4 x 8.05 mm for 181 g it is not really a compact phone, although not too slippery. However, there is a cover supplied, also to compensate for the pronounced bump was originally the dual chamber.
At the beginning of 2018 the Redmi Note 5 comes with one microUSB. Not that competitors do better in this price range, but the presence of a USB Type-C would be a bonus not a little. On the other hand, the Monochromatic notification LED and the IR sensor.
On the back we find the sensor ID, whose operation is reactive and precise, with a very small percentage of error. On the contrary, the system of Face Unlock it has proved more fluctuating: with good light it is usable, but almost always you will prefer to use the rear reader.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 sports a large display from 5.99 inches Full HD + (2160 x 1080 pixels), with a density of 403 PPI. The curved corners and frames contained they give a certain sense of modernity, usual of products of higher quality, and the oleophobic treatment is more than discrete. Thanks to the relationship in 18:9 we can make more use of the diagonal available, given the presence of the split screen.
Most likely it is the same screen as the Redmi 5 Plus, and that's good. It is a IPS with a good color fidelity, but without being washed out. Furthermore, the good brightness they appreciate everything even outdoors. This is also due to the lamination of the panel, whose protective glass is not too thick.
Through the settings it is possible to modify parameters such as white temperature and contrast, with 3 presets each. Also available Reading Mode for night readings, the double tap to wake and adjusting the font size.
Finally with the Xiaomi Redmi Note we see relevant news in the hardware sector. Instead of the reliable but abused Snap 625, the new has been implemented here Snapdragon 636 of Qualcomm. It is a solution a 14 nm which integrates a processor octa-core with maximum clock ad 1.8 GHz. A figure lower than the previous SoC, but which enjoys architecture Kryo 260.
Being this proprietary architecture, Qualcomm promises a performance boost up to 40% compared to the 630 Snap. Percentages aside, the leap forward is and is felt, although it is not epochal. In the benchmark phase, but above all in daily use, we note one discreet reactivity of the system. This also thanks to the RAM, for our sample always from 4 GB (there is also with 6 GB) but LPDDR4-1333 dual channel.
To manage the graphic part we find the renewed Adreno 509, designed specifically for devices in Full HD +, then with more pixels to be processed. Even with heavy games like Asphalt 8 and co. we do not notice frame drops, albeit with high details. To complete the whole we find 64 GB of storage eMMC5.1, expandable through microSD.
Another intriguing novelty is in the software, since the firmware is based on Android 8.1 Oreo and supports Project Treble. Currently the terminals with this release are counted on one hand, even considered the premium band. However, the experience dictated by the MIUI 220.127.116.11 China Stable is almost the same as Nougat. Especially for the notifications: In the lock screen, multiple notifications from the same app are shown individually, rather than grouping them into one. And no, there are no quick answers, just like the Picture-in-picture.
Obviously, being a China (although Stable), there are the various "problems": nothing Italian language (With More 2 room you can put a piece of cloth), Chinese apps (uninstallable), nothing Google services (however installable) e Google certification (therefore Netflix you will have to install it through APK). Beyond that, we do not even have the Google Assistant, replaced by new (but Chinese) Xiao AI. In short, nothing extremely penalizing and soon we will have the MIUI 9 Global available.
For the rest it is the "usual" MIUI 9, for better or for worse. Besides being able to customize the interface, even with the Themes, we have useful functions like the Dual App, to use two accounts on social networks, the private space that is Second Space, also assisted byApp Lock and many other additions, like it Screen Recorder.
As this is a smartphone in 18: 9, there are also the full screen gestures, with which to go to remove the on-screen keys. However, I continue to prefer this last option: I find it more ergonomic. And the gestures do not allow you to call up the voice assistant or make the quick switch between the latest 2 apps in the background.
Photo / video quality
For the first time in the Redmi Note range, one is used dual chamber, whose results have me convinced in half. Do not get me wrong: as I will explain now, you will hardly get any photos to discard. What turns upside down is the software optimization is not the best, we hope to solve the side updates.
This double configuration from 12 + 5 mega-pixel allows shooting through Portrait mode, with good shots for its band. The focus is also fair Dual PDAF, effective in both photos and videos. In the day the photos turn out vivid and detailed, especially by exploiting theAuto HDR. Since the ISP is the same as the Snap 660, I was expecting level performance even in low light, but it is not.
Even if an opening is available f/ 1.9 and pixels from 1.4 μm, the light captured is not enough to take photos of a level. The shots are not insufficient, but it is with little light that jumps out of the poor optimization software. Even if the chipset supports Zero Shutter Lag, at night it will take a bit 'of steady hand for not having micro-moves photos.
The same situation reoccurs with the front camera from 13 mega-pixels with opening f/ 2.0. By day the shots seem to come from much more expensive smartphones, even with Portrait mode ed HDR. At night, however, the quality of the shots falls dramatically.
If you were wondering why I did not try it with the now famous Google Camera, it's because the Camera2 APIs are not enabled. Therefore I will necessarily have to wait to unlock the bootloader, enable the libraries in question and then give an evaluation. In due course we will show you any improvements with the GCam.
Other software limitation is the absence of video recording in 4K, bypassable limit using Open Room. Absent even Full HD videos to 60 fps, even with third-party apps. The videos Full HD a 30 fps are well made, especially for theexcellent EIS stabilization. Too bad that at night the quality drops visibly.
Connectivity and audio
Being this Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 the Chinese version, it is absent support for the 20 band. I had no problems whatsoever, but I use Vodafone and live in a large town. So if you had problems about it, just wait for it Global variant.
That said, there is connectivity dual SIM 4G stand-by, as well as Wi-Fi ac Dual Band e Bluetooth 5.0, both fully functioning. present FM radio e IR sensor, while the NFC is missing. On the other hand, there is a compass to help the correctly functioning GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS / BeiDou sensors. The audio returned in headset capsule it is discreet, ditto for it lower mono speaker. The latter offers a full-bodied volume, while the frequency management is average.
As for its predecessors, even with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 battery life is not a problem. The integrated unit from 4000 mAh, combined with thrifty Snapdragon 636, provides above-average autonomy. Even with a medium / intense use they are obtained at least 7 hours of active display, between social, YouTube, Netflix, Spotify and gaming. You will have no difficulty in seeing it also last 2 days with a more basic use.
Although the 636 Snap would support the 4.0 Quick Charge, the included charger from 5V 2A is underestimated for the potential of the smartphone. With an alternative charger QC 3.0 I got the 70% in 1 now and the 100% in 2 ore.
Review Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 (Pro) - Conclusions and price
È lawful to have expectations, since in several they want to understand why spend more than, for example, a Redmi 5 Plus (and this will come to a special comparison). Expectations especially camera side, look where Xiaomi can still work.
At the same time It's hard to really complain about the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. There are no defects that really penalize the use: the only one that is approached is the microUSB standard used. All sectors behave discreetly and such an autonomy is good for the soul. Of course, we note the limitations implemented by Xiaomi, but we are still talking about a mid-range.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is available on GeekMall in the variant 4 / 64 GB at a price of 249 €. On this amount you can take advantage of a discount using the coupon "GIZCHINA". The store offers shipping from Italy, delivery in 48 / 72 hours, 2 years warranty and assistance in Italy.
