I must admit that already from the first unboxing (of which you find the video on ours Youtube channel) I was pleasantly surprised by this Meizu M6S, because already on paper seemed to promise well thanks to some good technical specifications and to a price deserve it competitive. With this smartphone the company has decided to revolutionize its products by inserting a in 18:9 and eliminating the famous physical key mBack frontal, in favor of one virtual that goes to perform the same functions.
It will be successful Meizu to create a good device and to rechape all the users who lately had lost confidence in the Chinese brand? Let's find out together in our review.
Meizu M6S review
Unboxing
The smartphone is sold in a classic white hardcover packaging in full Meizu style and inside it we find the following equipment:
- Meizu M6S;
- wall-mounted power supply with Chinese plug and mCharge fast charge support;
- USB charging cable - Micro USB;
- pin for the SIM slot;
- instruction manual.
Design and construction
Il design of this smartphone is rather pleasant and does not differ much from the last ones Meizu launched on the market, if not for the introduction of a panel in 18:9, For the 'elimination of the physical button mBack and for the movement of the fingerprint sensor on right side. The construction is very solid and the device seems to resist well to the bumps and scratches, even if unfortunately the back cover in satin aluminum he did not convince me very much, because poco oleophobic.
The smartphone is held quite well in hand, but presents the classic difficulties of the 18:9 in reaching the notification curtain during one-handed use. In fact, the dimensions are of 152 x 72.5 x 8 millimeters for a weight of 160 grams.
It did not convince me at all the fact that the fingerprint sensor it was not integrated in power button as it happens on Sony, as it is a decidedly more convenient solution. In addition, the power button is also located quite high, so it is not easily reachable with one hand. To avoid this problem, just press the button Super mBack, through which we can lock the screen with a long tap.
On the upper profile we find the microphone useful for reducing ambient noise, unlike the lower one where the system speaker, the main microphone, the Micro USB input and the mini jack input reside. As already mentioned above, on the right side there are the fingerprint sensor and the power button, while on the opposite side we see the volume rocker and the SIM / microSD slot.
In addition to the writing mblu and Meizu, on the back cover definitely stand the rear camera and the Dual Tone LED flash. We conclude with the front panel where we find the sensor of brightness and proximity, the front camera, the capsule and the notification LED.
Display
For the first time in its history, Meizu decides to use a panel in 18:9 and he does it right with his new one Meizu M6S. In fact, the smartphone is characterized by a panel IPS da 5.7 inches with resolution HD + (1440 x 720 pixels) and density of PPI 282.
I colors of the panel are good, but slightly tending to delle colder shades, while for the definition we are not there. Pixel ad is often easy to notice naked eyes such as happens on the home with application icons.
Also, some apps have not been optimized for the format 18:9 e YouTube it is the main example, as there are black bars on the sides of the video to play it in 16:9.
Il touch screen it's good, but I've found one slight latency nello scrolling.
Hardware and Performance
With great surprise, under the body we find an unprecedented chipset produced by SamsungOr l 'Exynos 7872, which includes a processor hexa-core with a maximum clock frequency of 2.0 GHz, a GPU Mali-G71 MP3, 3 GB di RAM e 32 GB di internal memory, expandable through microSD to 256 GB. However, we would like to point out that a variant with is also available storage da 64 GB.
The processor returns performance average, with a relatively reactive app opening for its price range, but with some slight random setback. We can not expect more, but manages to reach sufficiently without problems.
La GPU it behaves well and I have not found any critical issues even when playing heavier titles such as Asphalt 8 o Real Racing 3, which run without lag and with a constant frame rate.
Camera
Posteriorly we find a sensor Samsung S5K2P7 da 16 mega-pixels with opening f / 2.0 e Dual Tone LED flash.
I must say that despite all this Meizu manages to defend itself well from this point of view. The photos turn out to be buone for its price range even if they are not free from defects. In good light conditions the shots turn out to be quite defined and with gods discreet colors. Obviously we do not have an impeccable sharpness, but it behaves much better than other competitors. They also convinced me macro, characterized by a good bokeh effect, andHDR not excessively invasive. However, sometimes the lighting management it is not perfect and areas with strong light intensity will be overexposed.
Di will be quality falls as normal as it is, but still manages to guarantee us good photographs, above all for sharing on Social . Although these are not very bright, I was still quite satisfied with this sector, because here the classic "watercolor effect" that characterizes low-cost smartphones is not so obvious.
Frontally we find a sensor Samsung S5K4H7 da 8 mega-pixels with opening f / 2.0.
The photos taken with the front camera show the same strengths e defects of the rear one, with good results, but with a light management that is not always very precise.
I video they can be registered up to the maximum resolution Full HD and the performance greatly reflects those of the camera. We do not find an optical stabilization, but only digital and the autofocus is not very fast, but it is quite precise and functional.
Audio
L'audio output from the lower speaker unfortunately it is not very powerful and give preference to frequencies old e medium at the expense of those basse.
In headset the situation improves with respect to equalization, but the sound tends to distort slightly to maximum volume.
No problem with the headset and the microphone that allow us to entertain conversations without any kind of problem.
Connectivity
Il Meizu M6S supports connectivity LTE Cat.7 with support to dual SIM, but without la 20 band hated by most of the Meizu currently in circulation. The reception is not among the best, in fact, I often found myself in Edge in places where I had quietly with other smartphones H+, if not 4G. Unfortunately the absence of the 20 band there is and it feels.
For the rest we find the Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi a / b / g / n Dual Band and GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS with which we did not find particular problems.
As already mentioned above, the fingerprint sensor it has been inserted on the right side of the smartphone and I have to say it is molto veloce e accurate. I can safely say that the release is successful 10 times on 10.
Software
The software on board the Meizu M6S it is always the Flyme 6.3.1.0A, or the proprietary interface of the company based on Android 7.0 Nougat.
How many of you will know the letter "TO" in the acronym is to indicate the version Asian which, however, was translated from the store (in this case Geekbuying) and which presents both the Italian language and the Play Store. If I had to make an estimate, the85% of the interface is completely translated into our language and, albeit easily understandable, the remainder 15% remains in English.
The interface is a lot simple, minimal e user friendlyIn fact, we do not find too many submenus and all the settings are classified in an orderly and intuitive manner. There would not even need to do too many introductions on the Flyme, because we already know it in a very thorough way, but it is always good to make small summaries.
We do not find many ways to customize the graphics of the UI, if not only through i themes, which are very numerous and for all tastes.
The big news, however, concerns precisely the Super mBack softkey, who went to replace that physical that characterized so much Meizu. Thanks to the implementation of a kind of Force touch we can still perform all the functions related to this key, without giving up anything. Later I leave you the list of gestures:
- Extended tap with prolonged pressure: screen lock;
- Double tap with pressure: camera opening;
- Single tap: go back;
- Extended tap with short pressure: return to home;
- Side swipe on the bottom bar: quick opening of previous apps open in the background;
- Vertical swipe from the bottom bar: multitasking opening.
Furthermore, many others can be exploited screen gestures off to carry out various operations.
If you were not comfortable with the Super mBack, you can always deactivate it and use the classic Back / Home / Multitasking softkeys.
Despite everything, more than a couple of times it happened that at the opening of some app, this one freezasse suddenly together with the Super mBack, forcing me to wait a few seconds so I could close it from the background and open it again. Finally, since we do not natively find the Play Store and of Google services, some are present incompatibility with some applications such as Netflix, which can not be officially downloaded.
Autonomy
Il Meizu M6S It is equipped with a battery 3000 mAh that fails to return excellent results. In fact, during our tests we have totaled an average of 3 hours and minutes 15 di active screen. In short, we knew it was not a battery-phone, but we certainly expected a little more.
La full recharge it happens in about 1 hour and a half through the supplied power supply which integrates the proprietary fast charging technology mCharge.
Conclusions
In conclusion this Meizu M6S It is characterized by many alti e bassi. Among the points in favor we definitely find the photo gallery, design and construction, while among the negative ones I would insert theautonomy and software not perfectly optimized and updated.
However, the price to which it is sold is really low, we talk about 140 € (often it is a 130 € with coupons GizDeals) su GeekBuying, and this figure can not really be asked for more.
This smartphone beats hands down all Chinese devices registered Oukitel, Doogee, Leagoo, Umidigi etc. within the same price range and not, but it is still some go under compared to the Redmi series di Xiaomi.
