REVIEW Zoji Z7 vs a TRACTOR: will have resisted? | Video

Zoji Z7

In addition to the classic smartphones, the Chinese manufacturers have also proposed several rugged solutions, intended for an audience looking for a device resistant and mistreated, perhaps to bring to the beach and even in the water. The Zoji Z7, the subject of today's review, is part of this category of device, but is it really so durable?

Lo Zoji Z7 it's available at about 85 € from China at the TinyDeal store.

Specifications and sales packaging

The sales package is black and provides a very basic equipment: inside, in addition to the smartphone we will find a charger with European outlet and output to 1A, a USB-microUSB cable, a pin to open the cart and a film for the device.

Regarding the technical specifications, the Zoji Z7 mounts a processor Mediatek MT6737 quad-core at 1.3 GHz, flanked by one Mali T720 650 MHz GPU and 2 GB of memory RAM. Present then 16 GB of internal memory expandable via a card microSD, a display from 5 inches with HD resolution (1280 x 720 pixels) and covering glass Corning Gorilla Glass 4, with curl 2.5D.

The battery has a capacity of 3000 mAh, while the body is made almost completely of metal material alternating with rubber parts and rigid plastic, also because of the certification IP68. Obviously the backprint reader is not missing, followed by one 8 Mega-pixel camera (interpolated at 13) and a front 2 Mega-pixel camera (interpolated at 5). The dimensions of the body are of 154,9 x 79 x 11,9 millimeters, while the weight amounts to approx 220 grams, resulting therefore quite stocky and heavy.

Android is present in the version 6.0 Marshmallow and has a slight personalization in the launcher, which was partially revised by the manufacturer. Present the support to the LTE technology and to all bands used in Italy, 20 band including. Finally, we find the Wi-Fi b / g / n,Wi-Fi HotSpotBluetooth 4.2GPS and the possibility of using two SIMs, both in Nano format.

Design and construction

The design of the Zoji Z7 a little 'in the eye, not because it is particularly beautiful, indeed, but because it immediately appears as a really squat device, which gives the impression of being massive.

On the upper profile of the frame we find the audio jack from 3.5 millimeters covered by a hard rubber stopper, which makes the device waterproof. On the lower profile, however, we have only the micro USB port for charging, always covered by a rubber stopper. On the right side, finally, we find the volume bar and the power button, while on the left one the slot for le two SIM nano or for the microSD, also covered by a rubber stopper. On the two metal side profiles, we also find two grooves for easy gripping.

In the front part - starting from the bottom - we find i three soft-touch keys  DON'T backlit, the display from 5 inches with resolution of 1280 720 pixels x, the front camera from 2 Mega-pixel, the ear capsule and the proximity and brightness sensors in the upper part, also accompanied by the Notification LED.

Finally, on the back of the device we find a back-cover made of black metal, which guarantees a good grip, accompanied by rubberized edges. Then present the main camera from 8 Mega-pixel and Flash LED, flanked by the fingerprint sensor, the manufacturer's brand and - at the bottom - by the audio speaker.

The panel installed on the Zoji Z7 it is a unit by well 5 inches with HD resolution, or of 1280 x 720 pixels, which proved to be able to guarantee good color rendering throughout the color spectrum.

Zoji Z7Unfortunately, it does not excel brightness, which is why viewing in direct sunlight is difficult. The definition, however, proved to be more than sufficient, since I could not overemphasize the pixel grid, despite being only HD, far away from the most recent and widespread FullHD.

The touch screen is responsive but not too much, which did not show ghost-touch phenomena and supports up to 5 simultaneous touches. There are also different gestures and the possibility of waking up the device from stand-by with a double tap on the off display.

Performance and experience of use

The supplied SoC is definitely not a monster of power, given both the low-power architecture of the four Cortex A53 cores also matched with the content clock. Despite this, however, is able to ensure good performance and excellent responsiveness of the system, even if sometimes, perhaps because of the interface slightly revised by the manufacturer, I happened to incur some microlag. In any case, the installed solution, or the MediaTek MT6737, is always managed to maintain good performance in almost all activities, from the lightest to the most expensive, even if the target use of this device is limited to one use poco driven by videogames and focused on the main social applications, which have proven to run perfectly.

Good scores returned by the benchmarks, which place the device in the low end and aligned to other smartphones equipped with the same SoC.

The two gigabytes of RAM help the system and are rarely limiting, with the exception of intensive loads or in the case of hard multitasking, where we notice slowdowns and lag. Basic performance, therefore, but more than discrete for everyday use.

The photographic sector of the Zoji Z7 provides a solution for the rear camera from 8 Mega-pixel, which are interpolated to 13 from the supplied software. The same thing happens with the front solution from 2 Mega-pixel, brought to 5 thanks to interpolation. Needless to say, the quality is nothing exceptional, however the shots taken with the rear solution turned out to be more than satisfactory, both with and without HDR, given the amount of detail that the sensor is able to capture. The final quality is therefore comparable to that of the main competitors in this price range. On the other hand, the quality of the front camera is barely acceptable, which loses a lot in definition, returning shots poco defined.

The quality of the videos is also acceptable, registered in 1080P from the rear cam and 720P from the front one. As software, however, we find the classic camera of SoC Mediatek, without additional settings worthy of note then.

Autonomy and reception

Despite the claimed capacity of 3000 mAh and the SoC poco energy-hungry, the autonomy found was limited to poco more than a day with heavy use (Active 4G, a SIM, several email accounts and the main active Social), with a total of 4 hours and 10 minutes of active screen on 15 hours of use. An acceptable value but I would have expected a little more, since other devices with the same hardware configuration can get a few hours more autonomy.

On the reception front I have nothing to report, except that the support for all LTE bands, therefore also to the famous 20 band, which is why I have often managed to get an excellent 4G signal even with Wind in different locations in my area. overall reception turned out to be average or maybe slightly below for WiFi connectivity. Good audio on call, both outgoing and incoming, as well as in speakerphone.

Water resistance and resistance

We therefore arrive at the point of interest of this device: the impact resistance and waterproofing, given the IP68 certification. I performed several endurance tests, some as simple as they are trivial, others quite bad, just to see how far the device would go before finally throwing in the towel.

On the impermeability front, even after some swimming in the pool the device has shown to be completely resistant and immune to water, provided, of course, to close all the flaps on the doors and on the SIM compartment.

On the resistance front, however, I was quite disappointed, given that a drop of about one meter was enough to shatter the display cover glass, leaving me really thrilled as I didn't think it was enough poco to damage it irreparably, given the much publicized Rugged nature.

Zoji Z7

In short, a rugged phone only in the name and for the waterproofing it seems, since it was really enough poco to break the cover glass. Despite the damage, however, the device continued to work without any problems with the touch and display.

The rest of the tests? I leave them to you in the following video.

The installed Android version is the 6.0 MarshMallow slightly revised by the manufacturer, as we find redesigned icons and some additional features, such as the ability to awaken the device through the classic "double tap" gesture and other additional functions.

There are no special pre-installed applications, except Facebook and Twitter. The translation into Italian is good, quite complete, as well as navigation through the stock browser installed, typical of smartphones Mediatek that did not show any particular jamming, even loading the most demanding web pages.

For the rest, we find a bit 'the classic Android Stock devices with SoC Mediatek.

Will it be updated to Android Nougat? I doubt ...

Lo Zoji Z7 is initially interesting for the price, the hardware configuration and the Rugged nature of the device, but in practice it falls into its strength, or resistance, given that the front glass fell into disarray at the first trivial fall on cement, while continuing to work regularly. Then it goes well, in the subsequent extreme tests it has also been defended quite well, but in real tests, with the exception of impermeability, did not pass the fundamental tests.

As for the operation instead, the device is more than good, does not shine for performance but is suitable for basic and simple use, mainly made of web browsing and the main social applications.

Zoji Z7

It's not really "All smoke and no roast" but we do not go too far, unfortunately.

Lo Zoji Z7 it's available at about 85 € from China at the TinyDeal store.
