The mid-range range has never been so crowded. Meizu M5S is the Chinese manufacturer's answer to the competition, resulting in great care both in terms of aesthetics and software. But will it really win over the end user? Let's find out together in this new full review.
The sales package of the Meizu M5S it is of white hardback and inside it we find:
- Meizu M5S;
- a micro-USB cable;
- the charger with 9V output, 2A;
- the pin for removing the SIM;
- user manuals.
For this M5S, Meizu has chosen classic and not particularly original lines. In fact, the smartphone is quite anonymous to the sight. Nothing to say instead about the quality of construction: the rear is in aluminum while the front is totally in glass. The feeling of solidity restored to the touch is really good, just like è impeccable assembly of the various parts.
The not particularly generous dimensions of the phone allow good usability with one hand, thanks also to the suns 143 grams of weight.
On the right side we find the power-lock button and the volume rocker, both with very solid feedback, while on the left side there is only the SIM slot. The micro-USB port is located at the bottom, along with the microphone and the system speaker. There is also the audio jack from 3,5 mm at the top of the device.
On the back we find the camera from 13 mega-pixels and dual-tone LED flash, while in the front part, integrated in the home button, there is a fingerprint sensor, which I found fast and accurate, recognizing the 9 fingerprint on 10.
Also present at the appeal front cam from 5 mega-pixel and a Notification LED of white color.
The Meizu M5S display is a unit IPS from 5,2 inches, from the resolution HD. Although this is not a top-of-the-range panel, the general quality is good, with well reproduced colors and average viewing angles.
The brightness, of 380 nits, it is adequate in all situations, even under direct sunlight. In the settings it is possible to change the color temperature, while there is no blue light filter.
The main problem with this display is certainly the pixel density which stops at the suns PPI 282, a value not particularly high for today's standards, which is felt above all in the visualization of texts from close distances. Other devices in the same price range offer higher resolutions.
Positive note regarding theexcellent oleophobic treatment, which really holds very few footprints.
Hardware and Performance
The processor chosen by Meizu for this M5S is a not very recent Mediatek MT6753 octa-core from 1,3 GHz, assisted by 3 GB of RAM LPDDR3 RAM e 32 GB of internal memory (expandable with micro-SD up to 128 GB).
All this takes the form of one general speed of system and in a more than satisfactory fluidity. Multitasking management is also very good.
The graphic sector is entrusted to Mali T720, which proved to be adequate in every situation, even in the most demanding games. Real Racing 3, in fact, turns without jamming or lag, even with the maximum graphic details. Obviously no problem with lighter titles like Stack or Crossy Road.
However, operating temperatures are criticalIn fact, after a few minutes of use, even light, the phone tends to heat particularly. The situation worsens further when you stress the smartphone with games or heavy applications.
The operating system on board of Meizu M5S is Android MarshMallow 6.0, based on interface Flyme 5.6.12 (the Flyme 6 will come later) and security patches that date back to 5 October 2016.
The Flyme user interface deviates significantly from that of Android stock, with one flat and minimal graphics and system icons treated and pleasing to the eye.
One aspect that Meizu has invested heavily on is gestures: with a swipe from the bottom you can access multitasking, with a swipe to the left or with a tap on the home button you go back, while you can lock the phone with a long press of the home button. Overall, I found the implementation really successful and effective.
Classic notification management through the semi-transparent design curtain, while I found it inconvenient not to be able to change the various volumes from the pop-up to the screen, but only through the settings.
Do not miss a proprietary app where you can download themes and wallpapers, and an app store owner called Meizu Hot Apps.
An aspect to be emphasized concerns the absence of default of the Play Store and Google Services, an unjustifiable circumstance, above all by virtue of a brand that has been officially available on the Italian market for years, both online and in the last year, even offline in stores. These problems can be solved by downloading a tool or thanks to an APK.
In general, this Flyme returns a 'Fluid and pleasant user experience, without slowdowns or lag, even when you go to stress the smartphone with different apps in the background. Web browsing is very valid: with the Chrome browser I have not noticed jamming or pinch-to-zoom, even with very heavy pages.
A word about the results of the main benchmarks: GeekBench 4 returned a value of 613 points in single-core and 2123 points in multi-core, while on Antutu Benchmark M5S has stopped alone 40.000 points. The fault is certainly to be attributed to a CPU now dated, released about two years ago.
The Meizu M5S rear camera is a Sony unit from 13 mega-pixels with aperture f / 2.2.
The shots returned in optimal lighting conditions are more than discrete, with well reproduced colors and noise not excessive. The HDR improves the overall quality at the expense, however, of the color range.
Autofocus is particularly slow and imprecise, causing problems with the macros, and the shutter speed is not the best. Bad in low-light, where it will be difficult to obtain acceptable images. The situation improves using the dual-tone LED flash, which illuminates in a natural and uniform way.
The camera interface is customized by Meizu, with one minimal and essential graphics, with different shooting modes and with a wide selection of effects and filters.
Good quality of the front cam from 5 mega-pixel ed aperture f / 2.0, more than adequate for social use.
The same speech made for the photographic department can be extended to videos, shot at the maximum resolution of the 1080p is 30 fps.
Telephone part average. The audio quality from the ear capsule is good, as is the reception. Almost all the LTE bands are present, unfortunately the fateful one is missing 20 band. Classic, on the other hand, the management of the dual SIM card.
The system speaker is located at the bottom of the device, e the audio quality reaches sufficiency, although I would have expected a cleaner audio and a higher volume. Totally absent the low tones.
The 3000 mAh battery installed on this M5S has always brought me to the end of the day without any problems. With a particularly intense use of social media, YouTube and Netlfix, I passed without difficulty 4 hours on screen turned on.
Very good charging times, thanks to Quick-Charge support: with the charger supplied by 18W, it's necessary poco more than an hour and a half to reach 100%.
Conclusions and price
This M5S is currently online on The Amazon at a price of approx 160 €, perhaps slightly high for the product offered and the limits associated with it. First of all the display, poco defined and not particularly generous in size, but also a subdued camera and some outdated technical specifications.
The device is definitely recommended for those looking for a good software (even if with a Play Store not available out-of-boc), a good profile construction and the plus of the classic gesture of Meizu.
