The device is equipped with the new one Hexa-core SoC of RockChip, Or the RK3399, characterized by two Cortex A72 cores matched with four Cortex A53.

How will this SoC behave? Let's find out in the full review!

Yundoo Y8

Lo Yundoo Y8 is available on Gearbest to 92,13 euro with shipping from China.

Packaging and accessories

The sales package is made of black cardboard, on which we find little information about the product and limited to some technical specifications.

Inside we find the TV Box, thepower pack with European outlet, remote control (without batteries), a HDMI cable about a meter and a short user manual in English.

Specifications

As mentioned in the opening, the installed processor is the new one RockChip RK3399, hexa-core characterized by a cluster of two Cortex A72 cores and another from four cores Cortex A53, both with one maximum frequency is 2.0 GHz. The installed GPU is the Mali-T860MP4 and is able to support the resolution 4K a 60 FPS with codecs H.265 also to 10 bit.

We find, then, 2 GB of memory RAM DDR3 e 16 GB internal storage eMMC, expandable through microSD. Connectivity is guaranteed by the Wi-Fi Dual Band a / b / g / n / ac, a door Gigabit Ethernet, two 2.0 USB ports full-size, a USB Type-C and a USB 3.0. An Optical Audio output is not missing (SPDIF) and the Bluetooth 4.0.

The dimensions of the box, square in shape, are 116 x 116 x 23.5 mm, while the weight is around 220 grams. Finally, we find a connector for the mini-jack from 3.5 mm AV, a door HDMI 2.0 and the operating system Android 6.0 marshmallow.

Construction and design

The body of the Yundoo Y8 it is quite anonymous and simple, as it is square and, with the exception of some grooves on the top and on the sides, it does not include particular elements. However, it proved quite solid in every part, as I did not experience any creaking or bending at any point.

On the front profile we find the tasto Power. On the left one USB Type-C and 3.0 port, accompanied by the SD reader, while on the right there are no doors or accessories. In the back there is the exit HDMI, the audio one, the catch for thesupply, the door RJ45 Ethernet GigaBit and two o'clock 2.0 USB port. Finally, on the bottom we find only a label with some data of the device and the ventilation slots.

Compact and simplepower pack, which boasts an output from 5V to 2A and which is therefore able to deliver poco more than 10 Watt.

Performances

Le performance offers from the new SoC RockChip RK3399 they are more than satisfying and place the device in the medium-high band, also considering the values returned by benchmarking.

In fact, excellent results, superior to many TV Box tried in the past. The performance of the GPU is also very good, definitely a step ahead of the solutions installed on the various Amlogic. Reason why, even the experience of play has proved to be quite satisfying even on the last more expensive titles.

Slightly subdued the speed of internal memory, especially in writing, given the recorded values.

Overall, however, the reactivity and usability of the system turned out to be very good, even if in some contexts only 2GB of RAM turned out to be slightly limiting. Therefore, the services offered by this "new" platform were decidedly promoted.

Multimedia and video playback

As often happens on the various Chinese TV Boxes, also on the Yundoo Y8 we find the main pre-installed multimedia applications, including Kodi 16.1 Jarvis (TVMC) e Netflix, Besides YouTube and other multimedia clients. Obviously here too we find the usual limits of resolution and format in the various applications.

Running the classic video playback tests, I have not encountered any problems with playback, either in 4K and Full HD, with H.265 and H.264 codecs also a 60 FPS and with high bitrates. Some problems, however, both with videos a 10-bit than with those in HDR., which made me register some freeze of the system or of the media player. Almost certainly it is a software problem, since the hardware natively supports these formats.

Software

THEgraphic interface has been revised and is highly personalized by a launcher proprietario, even if the settings panel resumes the style of Android TV. Obviously, we can change the launcher but already the default one does its job well, making it usable system also with the remote control bundled.

Present, as always, the classic menu of Advanced settings Android, suitable for the most demanding users. There are then different shortcuts most used apps, collected according to the type of application. Not missing the drawer, located on the right.

Android, as already mentioned, is updated to the version Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Conclusions

Finally a TV Box that offers a little more power, both on the CPU front, where the two cores Cortex A72 they manage to push the most intensive tasks to the best, both on the GPU front, where the Mali T860MP4 guarantees excellent video-gaming performance. Pecca instead a little software, especially on video playback of the most difficult formats, but almost certainly this problem will be solved with future updates.

For the rest, for the sale price the Yundoo Y8 is definitely a good product, maybe there is still a few euros too much compared to the classic Box Amlogic TV but the performance gap is there. The Yundoo Y8 is available on Gearbest to 92,13 euro with shipping from China.
