Considering the high-end devices presented by the most important producers worldwide, whose prices have reached figures in some ways very high, it would seem almost unthinkable to be able to buy a smartphone with a good general construction, equipped with materials not only plastic, for less than 50 euros.

Yes, just so dear readers of GizChina.it: this is the price at which the subject of this review, or the Blackview A8.

At this point, the question we will try to answer is whether this device can be considered as one first option, for those who want to invest from an economic point of view the minimum necessary to buy a smartphone, or if the Blackview A8 is a choice only for those who want to equip themselves with a second device, maybe to be used in an emergency.

To answer these considerations you just have to keep reading our in-depth review of the device that challenges the "economic crisis".

Blackview A8 - Sales package

Despite the selling price, the equipment inside the pleasant sales box is surprising, which, made of white cardboard, in addition to the smartphone contains:

  • USB wall charger, with European socket and 0.15A output;
  • USB data cable - micro USB;
  • in-ear headphones;
  • flip cover made of faux leather;
  • quick instruction manuals.

Blackview A8 - Design and Materials

As we had highlighted in ours preview, the materials used for the realization of the Blackview A8 they are really good. Present a aluminum perimeter frame, well made, on which there are also, on the lower edge and on the upper edge, flush visible screws, which make the design particularly original. There back cover, gray, is made of polycarbonate and it is distinguished by a design with an upper band and a slightly knurled bottom.

Blackview A8

At an ergonomic level, the smartphone makes one-handed use quite simple and free of particular problems.

However, the size of 144.9 x 72.9 x 9.3 mm they are not particularly optimized, given the presence of side frames and rather large upper and lower bands; the weight is of 160 grams, while the smooth texture of the back cover does not facilitate the grip, although the device is still easily handled.

Blackview A8

Il perimeter frame, made of metal, has two slight polished steps with a diamond effect, and integrates the volume rocker and the on / off button on the right side.

On the lower edge there are two visible screws, which we do not know if they perform a purely aesthetic or functional function to facilitate the disassembly of the device. Always here we find the main microphone.

Confirming the excellent assembly of the smartphone contributes to the fact that the keys are firmly in place, as well as providing a good run. The entrance is then placed on the upper edge of the frame Micro USB and admission mini jack da 3.5 mm.

Blackview A8

On the front we find the display from 5 inches of diagonal, protected by a glass with curl 2.5D, a solution often adopted by higher-end devices.
In the lower part we find i 3 soft keys drawn on the black frame, not backlit, but provided with tactile feedback.

Blackview A8

On the upper part we find the ear capsule, the front camera from 2 mega-pixels equipped with single LED flash, the proximity sensor and finally the Notification LED not RGB.

By removing the back cover, firmly attached to the device and free from all sorts of noise, we can observe the Removable battery da 2050 mAh, the dedicated micro SD slot and of 2 micro SIM slots, thanks to which it is possible to expand the memory without sacrificing the use in dual SIM.

Blackview A8

Still remaining on this part of the device, we find the rear camera on the top left Sony IMX149 da 8 mega-pixels with dual flash LEDs monochrome, the system speaker and the company logo.

Blackview A8 - Display

As anticipated above, the display of the Blackview A8 it's a unit from 5 inches diagonal with resolution HD 1280 x 720 pixel, equipped with a glass with curvature 2.5D to protect the screen. A black gasket is integrated throughout the profile of the curvature which, although it helps to protect the glass more in case of impact, slightly spoils the design.

Blackview A8

La color rendering of the display is discreet. Also on this device, equipped with a panel IPS, blacks turn out poco deep and tend to veer especially in angled vision.

Present option Miravision, which allows you to adjust the contrast and saturation of the display to your taste. The viewing angle is discreet, with no particular critical issues.

La brightness maximum appears to be acceptable, fair readability outdoors, although, in conditions of direct sunlight, a higher value would have ensured greater ease in interacting with the display. We do not find on this device the brightness sensortherefore the regulation of the same must be done manually in the situations in which it will be necessary.

About the touch screen we did not find any uncertainties, although this is a multi-touch only to 2 touches simultaneous. For what concern touch & feel, appears to be average for a device in this price range.

Value low per quanto riguarda oleofobicità and just enough for the reflectivity.

Blackview A8 - Hardware and performance

The device adopts a chipset MediaTek MT6580, widely used mainly for low-cost devices: this is a SoC with a processor quad-core Cortex-A7 with architecture 32 bit ARMv7 and clock frequency of 1.3 GHz.

It is evident that this is not a particularly lending solution, but able to guarantee low energy consumption and very low production costs; made these premises, the device in daily use is free from particular jamming or lag, probably thanks to a good overall optimization and software that, except for some mild customizations, can be compared to a stock version of Android.

The graphics sector uses a single-core GPU ARM Mali-400, low-end graphics card that definitely suffers the weight of the years. Also in this case the same is true for the CPU: games like Asphalt 8, Real Racing 3 e Modern Combat 5 turn in an enjoyable way (clearly in low details), without going to particularly affect the user experience.

In daily use, heating situations of the device are not perceptible to the touch such as to be annoying: after the execution of the various benchmark tests, or after a gaming session of several minutes, the back of the device is slightly warm, more precisely in the part top of the back cover.

Continuing with the hardware specifications, we have 1 GB of RAM, certainly few when compared to many other end devices poco higher: in spite of this, even with many applications open in the background there are no visible lags that could compromise their usability.

Poor internal memory that stops only 8 GB overall, of which actually available to the user are approximately 3 GBtherefore, the use of one will be obligatory micro SD, to have enough space to store your multimedia content.

Blackview A8 - Cameras

The photographic sector of this device stands below sufficiency. The rear camera has a sensor Sony IMX149 da 8 mega-pixels and a double flash LED monochrome, while the front one is alone 2 mega-pixels, combined with a single flash LED. The software is MediaTek's stock one.

In situations of low brightness the results are poor, and also with the flash the situation does not improve much. Clicking in HDR the improvements are almost imperceptible and the colors tend to mix. The situation worsens further at night.

La focus of the subjects is rather slow, and in some situations it can be difficult not to get blurred photos, especially in the "point and shoot".

Blackview A8 - 720p HD video recording test

Videos are shot at a maximum resolution of 720p and are saved in the format .3gp, now definitely unused by the latest generation devices.

La stabilization, of type digital, works with the limitations due to the technology itself, and it will therefore be necessary to have a stable hand or to have photographic accessories to ensure stable shooting. In low light situations, videos tend to get grainy.

Blackview A8 - Connectivity

Being a device that makes the price its winning weapon, it is clear to have to give up some features, even in terms of connectivity, because the smartphone supports data exchange in 3G, thus being devoid of fast 4G LTE connectivity.
Il Dual SIM è managed in a basic way, not presenting particular personalizations: therefore, the possibility of setting up different ringtones for the two cards is absent.

La reception è discreet with both SIM, both in the voice and data departments, and during our tests we did not find any changes in signal reception.
Absent the 3G band to 900 MHz, so if you are an H3G customer you may encounter some coverage problems inside buildings and / or in peripheral areas.

The connection Wi-Fi is the type 802.11 b / g / n: we have never had problems in connecting and registering a new network, as in hooking up networks already saved. The HotKnot is absent.

Il Bluetooth 4.0 It does its job and we have not encountered any problems with the connection. For what concern GPS, the signal was not engaged in the closed area, even near a window. Outdoors first fix was obtained in poco more than one minute, quite high value, although it remained stable during use.

No connection problems to the PC through the USB port: the device was immediately recognized and it was possible to perform all file transfer operations from the smartphone to the computer and vice versa.

Blackview A8 - Software

On board the AXXUMX we find Android Lollipop 5.1, with a customized graphical interface from BlackView, mainly with regard to system icons graphics, while the rest of the graphical interface is practically Android Stock, all for the benefit of the fluidity of the system, considering the hardware not really the latest.

Also available some widgets that allow you to access directly from the home screen to the main camera, with a situation comparable to a system "PIP" (Picture In Picture). Also pleasing is the widget for listening to music that presents the graphics of a turntable.

The settings menu follows the version of Android Stock: present, therefore, theapp drawer, and we do not find any particular addition by the manufacturer, except for the menu "Doodle" (Gestures), where, beyond the always useful Double Tap to Wake, there are other gestures that can be made on the screen by matching a specific operation by drawing different letters on the screen.

Very few pre-installed apps at the time of powering up, among which we also find a browser that is not optimal, so we suggest installing Chrome to take advantage of a better browsing experience.

Blackview A8 - Autonomy

Although we speak of a unit of 2050 mAh, so not a huge capacity, the autonomy guaranteed by the battery results average, especially when compared to other devices currently on the market.

Precisely for this reason the autonomy of the same, which is attested in the normality of a daily use, is facilitated byhardware not particularly energivorous, considering the SoC and the HD resolution screen. Surely a greater capacity would have been a welcome presence.

Blackview A8

Negative notes concern the charging of the device: the supplied battery charger, with an output by yourself 0.15A, allows the full recharge in about 3 hours, definitely too much for a battery of this capacity, considering the current fast charging technologies that guarantee in daily use poco time to take us to the end of the day in case of need.

Blackview A8 - Audio

Given the price range of this terminal, on the multimedia front it is not possible to expect much. Regarding the audio, specifically, the maximum volume è just sufficient, also seen the positioning of the system speaker on the back of the device, which tends to suffocate it when resting on flat surfaces, as well as distorting if brought to maximum power.

Also, as we had seen for the Bluboo Picasso, the manufacturer has implemented more than a few options for improving the audio part. In fact, they are present special settings to optimize the audio output, both in headset that ofspeaker system, including the mode Surround, for an equalizer a five bands and another feature that allows you to improve the audio range by linking it to the type of source we are listening to, that is music or film.

L'audio in the headphones è average, without excelling from a qualitative point of view, with a volume that, although not high, does not present harmonic distortions.

Regarding the telephone part, the audio we received, both in earpiece and hands-free, it turned out tall and clear; the microphone works well and our interlocutor found no problems in receiving our voice.

Present the FM Radio, with a very basic interface that we could define as too minimal.

Blackview A8 - Conclusions

Overall, we can say that the Blackview A8, despite the very low price, it is a device that can be considered not only as a telephone "reserve".

From the aesthetic and constructive point of view really nothing to complain about.
Too bad for using a dated chipset that precludes the possibility of using 4G LTE connectivity. As you may have noticed, the main flaws are mainly present in the photographic sector, although it is right to consider that we talk about a device that makes the price its trump card, and objectively, for what it offers, we can promote it with the due reserves previously listed.

Blackview A8 It is available for purchase on the online store TomTop, in the colors Black, White e Gold, at a price of 50,59 euro.
